NFT: Soccer: Premier League Starts Today!

Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 8/5/2022 8:59 am
30th anniversary of the English Premier League kicks off this afternoon with Arsenal and Palace at 3 p.m. Now I feel old.

While it may be a two-horse race btw City and Liverpool, it's going to be a very interesting season with the 5-week break for the World Cup in between, instability at Chelsea and Manchester United, and Conte year 2 at Spurs.

Be Champions!
Chelsea

I wouldn't say instability there at all. Tuchel leading through nice but just have some bloat as usual.

I keep waiting for Pool to slip a little but with there new additions I doubt it. Can't wait.
Lets go Saints! We can crack the top 15 once again!

Love the Premier League.

City and Liverpool both brought in some new talent. Really excited to watch those two fight it out again. They were both so eerily evenly matched last year.
amped its back...

glad they have what feels like a month off, haha.

I agree it feels like a two horse race, but I really like what Chelsea did. Specifically bringing in Sterling. I know chelsea brings in a "sterling" all the time (werner....lukaku..) but i think he will fit better. For one he is already use to playing with other elite guys.

Leeds should be a fan favorite in the US. Couple americans on the roster who should play(aaronson, Adams).

and an American manager...
My Spurs are primed for a big year!

I love what they've done this offseason bringing in Perisic, Bissouma, Richarlison, among others. No doubt, it may appear to be a City/Liverpool battle, but I think Spurs may be able to make things uncomfortable for those clubs. Biggest difference from last season for me is Kane is no longer looking to leave, which definitely impacted his play the first few months of last year (not to mention they were simply not very good under Nuno). Excited to get back to it!

Finally feel like they are going in the right direction and may actually place in the top 4 this year. Good young talent, and got some solid pieces in the summer transfer.

Selhurst is not an easy place to place, so it’ll be a tough test to start out - I think they’ll pull through today….

GO GUNNERS!!
USA
GF1080 : 8/5/2022 11:22 am : link
7 American players in the Prem this year plus Marsch at Leeds coaching. Don't think I'm missing anyone. Doesn't include loaned out guys like Steffen or Slonina now.

Pulisic - Chelsea
Turner - Arsenal
Aaronson & Adams - Leeds
Richards - Crystal Palace
Robinson & Ream - Fulham

I'm not particularly a fan of Arsenal ... in fact, as far as EPL goes I have to admit I am a "fair weather" fan, following the Americans and other players I decide to like (DeBruyne).

But I agree that the Gunners seem to be moving in the right direction and could well be in the Champions League qualifying mix, at least.
Everyone's been burying Leicester City

for an inactive transfer summer, but the starting 11 is as good as ever and having a healthy Fofana is going to make a huge difference. I think rumors of their demise are greatly overstated.
Solemn predicition of the season

I think we have another fan takeover/invasion of Old Trafford if Ten Hag can't right the ship. Anti-Glazer sentiment is at a fever pitch and the Glazers no longer have Ed Woodward to serve as a fall guy.

The whole Frenkie De Jong and Ronaldo stuff is just adding to the frenzy. Will certainly be an interesting season.
Strong top 6
moespree : 8/5/2022 1:58 pm : link
Don't see United getting past 6 though. Fans will not like that. Ten Hag is a good manager, but they're not up to the level of the other 5. City, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea are better than them.

City and Liverpool will battle for 1 and 2 again. Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea for 3, 4 and 5.

Arsenal has significant improvement in all areas. Gun to my head, Conte is the difference and can get Spurs to 3rd.

City and Liverpool will go back and forth all season again. Would not shock me to see Liverpool top City and win the league.

Nunez is a great signing by Liverpool and changes their entire attack. Teams would swing their centerbacks out wide to shadow Salah and Mane in years past. Can't do that with Nunez in the middle. Should open the door for Salah to cut inside and score a huge amount.

Exciting season ahead.
I think in 10 more years the Premier League will become.....

Love the EPL but have grown tired of Chelsea and it's constant inflow and outflow of talent. I find myself rooting more for the teams outside the Big 6. Had hoped that Chelsea would transfer Pulisic out but understand he wants to stay. It's unfortunate as he will not get the minutes he needs to fully develop playing behind the other talented players on this team. Expect both Tyler Adams and Aaronson to improve even though they are playing for a team on the edge of relegation next year.

Fellow United fan sharing the same sentiments. I think Malacia and Martinez are good underrated signings and Eriksen brings more class to a midfield lacking creativity. Somehow they failed to address their two biggest short comings 1. Center forward and 2. Defensive midfielder. Martial already hurt and the nonsense with Ronaldo is obviously an issue.

Still time in the window but they need to add to the roster. As it stands I don’t see them making enough ground to get back into the Champions league.
I don't want to make too much of it, because

it's only Week 1 of 38, but Liverpool dropping points at Fulham has to sting a bit.
Nice come

Southampton Saints (looks like its a relegation battle this season). Sessegnon in particular looked good.

Agree. It was Aaronson's goal even if the defender made contact too.

I am a newbie Spurs fan, so still learning. I thought Kulusevski had a great game. Bentancur seems like a really steady player, too.
Spurs are good
moespree : 8/7/2022 12:55 am : link
Significant improvements to the squad. All players that have traits and style that matches Conte and what he expects. I don't view them as title challengers, BUT Conte knows no other way. He will have them chasing Liverpool and City and there will come times they scare them.
ManU looks terrible so far - and that a good thing IMO

down 0-2 at the half to Brighton at Old Trafford LOL
