Define your “Ideal Depth Player”?

HopePhil and Optimistic : 8/5/2022 2:16 pm
All the talk about our lack of depth across the board got me thinking about what ideal depth players would be, especially on a team that is rebuilding and not necessarily competing for a playoff spot, let alone a championship. Add in our limited cap space and our options further reduce.

For sake of discussion, let’s say we’re ok with the starters at a certain position group, would you prefer the backups be young players with potential to contribute less this year but more down the road, or mediocre veterans who can perform better now, help build culture etc?

Would you pay above veteran minimum for bridge players, effectively borrowing cap space from future years? ( Slayton for example getting $2.5 mil to be WR4 at best)

I’m in favor of churning the bottom of the roster to bring guys in so the staff can get an extensive evaluation of their potential value going forward, but the worry about the depth to me seems overblown.

Thoughts?

You always want to have players that can push the starters.

Does it matter if they are ascending or descending at this point in the careers?

In my mind a mix of both is most ideal.

A mixture of both, I'd lean towards having younger more athletic guys. You can only have so many grizly vets with high IQ's and experience.
Generally versatile players

who can play more than one role like the Patriots. And like the Patriots specialists at the RB position (short yardage, 3rd down backs).

With our talent I think we can't be too choosy at this point though.

Boothe. Cheaper, filled in a few times over several years and then started in 2011. Waiver wire pick up.

Where the Giants are I would rather have the young draft picks play. When they get some cap relief with hopefully a better foundation then they can bring in more experienced but affordable vets. Players who were really good at one time but fallen off a bit. Still on good teams they are good assets especially in the playoffs.
Either an ascending player

Or a Guy that has something special for a single role but is not a guy you want as a long term starter because he is limited in what he can do.

So a Blocking TE, he can play a game or 2 but you really only want him for a limited role

Pass Rush specialist

LB that plays the run well

If its OL I would rather have a good pass blocker over a good run blocker, ideally in this situation you want a young ascending player

Seems from reports J. Ezeudu might be one.

On most other teams he would have been a starter .
