NGT- How much longer can 49ers keep the drama of Jimmy G

jvm52106 : 8/5/2022 2:31 pm
going during camp? To be honest, it is pretty odd to have Jimmy at camp, working on the side (where all can see him) now that you have pretty much made it known he is not only not the starter but will not be on the team this season.

At the same time the 49ers have ZERO edge or leverage with trade options as teams know you can't keep him into the season and you (the 49ers) yourself have made it know you WON'T keep him into the season.

The 49ers are 100% banking on a teams QB either floundering badly or getting injured here in camp.

I have a feeling

they'll be cutting him at the end of august to save money. Every team interested should be waiting for that. If you wanted/needed Jimmy...you'd make a move for him by now at this stage in camp..no?
Jimmy G is destined

to wind up like the red stapler guy from Office Space.
Until 4:00 PM, August 30th?

up and trade opportunities for the 49ers. Has he even been cleared to throw/practice yet? No one will trade for him unless he’s healthy.
I think Jimmy will be fine
jvm52106 : 8/5/2022 3:00 pm : link
It is the 49ers that have effed this situation. Imagine if Lance looks horrible in game action and Jimmy is still on the roster. There will be guys clamoring for him to play.

Either way if he is cut he will pass through waivers as nobody will want that salary and then he can pick his spot.

Watch for the LA Rams here. If Stafford's elbow is a concern I can't see why they wouldn't try and sign him (if he is cut).

Yes, recently.
Based on the early returns from Jones in camp
eric2425ny : 8/5/2022 3:02 pm : link
and Daboll himself saying Jones has “a long way to go” the other day to the media I would say we are in the floundering category right now.

The issue is that we have no cap room without extending players we very likely don’t want to extend, and that the team is nowhere near complete. Jimmy G would win us a few more games but he has had injury issues (including the shoulder right now) throughout his career and is basically an “above average” QB.
He's in no mans land
AcesUp : 8/5/2022 3:06 pm : link
In terms of ability vs the cap, there isn't a market for him. The league knows what he is and there isn't an appropriate salary tier for mediocre starting QBs at the moment. The shoulder issue only complicates that further. But even taking that away, what is the end game to trading for him? An extension? For what amount? There isn't a precedent worth pursuing there as teams wisen up.

The niners are waiting for an injury to a playoff contender, that is their only option right now.
Their will take as long as needed

what’s the rush?
The only suitor they may have botched things with
AcesUp : 8/5/2022 3:11 pm : link
is Carolina since the braintrust is on the hotseat. They're more likely to make a shortsighted decision. Otherwise, I don't think the Niners are doing anything wrong, they're doing what they can with the hand they've got. Waiting it out is probably the right move as injuries are unfortunately inevitable.
If we moved on from jones in 2023
Payasdaddy : 8/5/2022 3:13 pm : link
would Jimmy G be a good enough option for us?
Or do we just try to go qb #1 in draft (even if we have to trade this yrs 2 and next yrs #1 to do it)?

Actually scratch that, they botched big time with Washington. They let that clown show get away from them.
Injuries can/will happen the next couple or weeks
UConn4523 : 8/5/2022 3:18 pm : link
if one of them is to a good QB on a good team, JGs value goes up. I’d hold him until the very last minute.
Potential injuries can still occur
Lines of Scrimmage : 8/5/2022 3:28 pm : link
Depending on the Watson situation I could see Cleveland looking into it.
They will keep him all year
BH28 : 8/5/2022 3:47 pm : link
Unless some team has a QB injury and panic trades for him.

If he went nuclear like Mayfield, they'd have no choice but to cut him. Right now he's a team player.

Their window to move him was during the QB carousel in FA and they've lost a ton of leverage since then. Injury didn't help either.
They would be wise to keep him, Lance is doomed to fail.
Jack Stroud : 8/5/2022 4:03 pm : link
He is nothing more than big RB playing qb.

Couldnt disagree more. He is likely the top pick this past draft if he stayed in college. He has a big time arm.

I don’t get this reference. Can you elaborate cause it’s definitely flown over my head. A super pretty boy that powns super models and has had pretty decent success in the NFL versus Milton, a nerdy pushover computer geek with no social life that gets pushed to the edge until he robs the place blind and burns it to the ground.

Where am I losing the relation?

You couldn't be more wrong. The big questions coming out were lack of experience and that he was sheltered with a great running game that racked up huge leads. Can he handle 2 minute drill shootout types like the BUF/KC playoff game? This is not like someone like Malik Willis who was a RB playing QB.

I'd hate to have another bad season of Giants football but 2023 Draft QB1 please
What an awful problem to have
HomerJones45 : 8/6/2022 10:51 am : link
your new starting but inexperienced qb is backed up by a guy who took the team to Conference championship games 2 of the last 3 years, and the one year they didn't go, he got hurt and played 5 games. I don't think the Niners are in any particular hurry to trade.

Can we have a problem like this?

Correction. A RB playing QB with chronic arm fatigue.

You want a QB who’s proven to choke in big games and has been the number 1 reason they don’t have a super bowl or 2 in the last 3 years?
I continue to think Seattle is a real possibility for Jimmy G

At $25m it is a big problem for your backup. One who we don’t even know can throw well after shoulder surgery, and that was on top of already having only an ok arm to begin with.

49ers have a problem because they don’t know what Lance will do and they do know what JG could do when healthy which is part of the reason why they drafted Lance. They very well can bust at QB with a roster that can otherwise contend.
