It’s Daniel Jones Roster Bonus Day

christian : 8/5/2022 3:21 pm
Per multiple sources Jones receives his 3.2M roster bonus today.

This bonus was always fully guaranteed, and factored into his cap hit. The only thing to note is this makes the unlikely chance of him being traded, a virtual impossibility as it would have basically no positive cap implication for the Giants.

If he were traded before today it would have been about a 4.2M savings. If he’s traded now it will be less than 1M in savings.
If I were Jones
I Love Clams Casino : 8/5/2022 3:24 pm : link
I'd bankroll that for a rainy day, and live like a normal person using just the base salary.

I think he's gonna need it.

Who would trade for Daniel Jones ??

A team looking for an upgrade at the backup quarterback position, and the opportunity to buy low and see. Jones at a 4.2M cap hit is a fine value as a backup.

The New York Giants are presumably starting him, so he’s a viable backup.

I think when all is said and done, Jones settles into a career as a spot starter, super-sub like Bridgewater and Winston.

And I think you have no idea what a career as a long term backup NFL QB is like. He’ll retire a very wealthy man and one with a future as a coach as a possibility.

(1) It was very unlikely that Jones would be traded this year.
(2) It is very unlikely that Jones is a Giant next year.

As far as his future with other teams, a lot will depend on his health even if he plays well this year. He's had significant head and neck injuries.

Bad QBs make their OL, their skill position players, and their coaches all look bad.

What's more likely: that a zero-star recruit who walked on for a doormat football program and has generally been at or below median production for his entire football career including college is actually part of the mediocrity, or that somehow this incredibly talented player has slipped through the cracks of talent evaluation at every level of football from high school on?

Is it more likely that DJ was held back by the roster built by the same person who also chose him, or that DJ is also one of the mediocre selections by that GM?

Occam's razor suggests that DJ is part of the problem.

Just about every Draft Expert ad Jones as a 1st round draft pick. You may not think he was the #6 overall pick but he was a 1st round talent by many. He was better than Haskins and Drew Lock who most thought were ranked higher. Maybe he cant elevate the talent around him, we wouldnt know that yet, he hasnt had any talent to work with. When QBs are under pressure they fail more often than not.

Look at the stats under Shurmur who knows how to run an O, he was showing good positive signs. Under Judge/Garrett te O was a joke and you can see how it fell off a cliff when DJ went out. He may never be a star but he has a chance to be successful in a good QB friendly offensive system. Not many QBs could have been successful under the situation from the last 2 years.

This isn't personal. A lot of us just don't think he's that good of a QB/the long term answer at the position. Gun to head, I think this is last rodeo with us & he's a backup somewhere else next fall.
Well as sign of the times

There is certainly much hate in the world and I there is certainly dissatisfaction (hate) expressed towards DJ the quarterback, on this site.

But I didn’t see any of that on this particular post? I read the poster as referring to DJ hate in general

Why you making a deal about this? Certainly you understand many here have ridiculed him as a quarterback.

Not saying his play hasn’t warranted it or that they should stop. I simply said I don’t relate to it.

I m one of the few excited for his chance to step up this year. I participate in almost every Jones thread, I should probably revisit that tendency.

christian : 8/5/2022 6:49 pm : link
I think it’s strange this poster It's a New Day comes on a thread about a pretty benign financial milestone, and interprets it as hate for Daniel Jones.

To me it indicates an element of sensitivity. I think we can all agree no one is expressing any hate for Jones on this thread (yet :)

My favorite off-the-field part of the game is the financial and resource part of the game. It’s a puzzle I find fascinating and tangible.

There are plenty of threads to beat up opinions of love and hate. This was just a thread to discuss a financial topic and its implications.

I agree. But I have no problem admitting I do not like watching Jones play football. If the QB play is bad in the NFL, it makes the viewing experience dreadful. And that's Jones right now.

Sure, his surrounding cast has not been ideal, but he has really done nothing to demonstrate he has the force multiplier gene that the position requires in today's game.

I hope DJ morphs into Mahomes this season, but I'm not expecting it.

He may never be a star but he has a chance to be successful in a good QB friendly offensive system. Not many QBs could have been successful under the situation from the last 2 years.

Except the "under pressure" part is a fallacy. The OL was bad, no doubt about that, but bad OL play is common in today's NFL. The OL had some very visible and complete breakdowns, without question - and some of those jailbreak pass rushes were among the worst in the league. But those breakdowns were worse in terms of severity, not frequency or rapidness.

DJ's average time to throw last season was closer to the middle of the pack than the bottom. His percentage of hurries, pressures, hits, and sacks were also closer to the middle of the pack than the bottom. He wasn't blitzed with any less frequency than the league at large, as some have posited. Other QBs within the same range as DJ in terms of OL metrics produced far better results in 2021.

What that suggests is that DJ is a slow-reading QB right now, and it doesn't take much to disrupt him. He isn't facing more pressure than the average NFL QB. The pressure that he does face isn't coming more quickly than it does for the average QB. DJ's average pocket time in 2021 was 2.5 seconds, which is higher than Josh Allen (2.4), Justin Herbert (2.4), Patrick Mahomes (2.4), Aaron Rodgers (2.3), Tom Brady (2.3).

But I'm willing to bet that, in order for DJ to read the field and process what he sees, it takes him longer than the one or two tenths of a second advantage he's getting compared to the top QBs in the game. They read the field and process information faster than DJ, so they don't need nearly as much time in the pocket to begin with. And when DJ does face pressure, he's obviously disrupted by it. And it does affect his game. And that is a reason for his poor performance.

But he bears a lot of responsibility for that himself, by not being elite in his mental processing skills.

Um I don't know... maybe TWO top 7 first round picks on the offensive line? Or the fact that Toney, Golladay and Barkley are all healthy and practicing, or maybe we got a competent coach finally, or maybe in his fourth season (like Eli) the lights will come on and the game will slow down for DJ.

is dunking all over this thread, so thank you GD for the objective analysis.

Jones fans NEVER have any recent evidence of good play to point to. it’s all hopes and dreams of what the guy who looks like their fantasy QB could become if surrounded by 10 Hall of Famers.

this god awful Jones era (error), launched by the same guy who drafted and signed Jones’ accomplices in ineptitude, mercifully ends this season.

do i hate Daniel Jones? no, i just hate watching him play for the Giants because he fucking sucks, makes horrendous decisions with the ball in his hands, and the owner of our team thinks he knows better than actual football evaluators, which is the main reason why Jones still has a chance to start and prolong our misery. if the Giants haven’t been good to Jones bc they didn’t surround him with enough talent (LOL!), what does that say about how good they’ve been to the fans? 10 years of eating shit feels like enough.
