Tonight is battle of the Maxs: Fried vs. Scherzer
Mets up 2-0 with Guillorme and McCann on base as I post this.
When I look at fangraphs, they have the Mets ranked 13th in baseball. The Braves are actually listed 2nd.
I already posted it the other day. Where we are ranked statistically today and where we are ranked/projected to wind up are two completely different things. And FG keeps that up to date up to the second. Actuals take over for projection with each game. Its essentially a rolling forecast. Here it is again.

coop is right, try going on a Yankees thread. they love hicks, they hate hicks, they love him again, then they want him cut,.
The other night I saw someone post to cut Gerrit Cole. Like what?
Oh, those game threads are awful. Complains about every single pitch, every player that gets a hit against them is a scrub, every pitcher that pitches well against them is a no talent hack. LOL, we are nowhere near as depressing as those threads.
Listen, I know I’m not always the most positive person here and I’m sorry that it irks some of you. I’ve taken shit about it and that’s okay. But I’ve also made plenty more positive comments. And even if some on here bicker at times (myself included) I still think you are all some pretty rad “strangers” on a message board and I enjoy the threads. Let’s keep the train moving!

Cooper. I've noticed a difference in your posts in the last week or two. I'm really enjoying them now, especially the last one you posted. I thought it was very insightful.

I’m curious to know what stats you are using that show that the Mets BP is second in the majors. Sure doesn’t feel like that.

So, we are ranked 13th as of today but we are “projected” to end up ranked 2nd by the end of the season? Do I have that right?
It gets complicated when you start guessing why everyone is reduced down so much, but thats just how they do it.
+1. Me too re holding my breath until he pitches a few games without injury.

Until he gets a few games under his belt. Looking forward to a huge encore from his first game back tomorrow.

My q is Who is picking up his innings tomorrow, I’m assuming he goes 75 pitches but that’s like the 5th if all goes well.

It's gotta be Joely and Medina.
Even Snablats loves Pete.
He just got entrenched in his heel arc and kind find his way out.
Redemption arc incoming...!
He doesn’t love Pete - according to him, Pete is “below average” defensively. But that’s based on his own “eye test”; nevermind the objective metrics that say otherwise.

Unfortunately there is no one else.
I hate to piss away a degrom start, but there is no one else to bridge the 9th (with a lead of course)
Vogelbach: .324/.477/.559
Naquin: .318/.318/.727
Ruf: .333/.333/.444
Combined (75 plate appearances):
.323/.413/.600
4 HR, 9 XBH, 12 RBI
Dom Smith & J.D. Davis, in a combined 124 games and 359 plate appearances: 4 HR, 25 XBH, 38 RBI. They have almost a third of the RBI in 21% of the plate appearances so far, and just as many HRs. LOL. Glad that is over with.
mine tastes especially good today.
Which month??
Mets pitchers over the last 28 days have a 2.94 ERA and 1.139 WHIP...and that includes Walkers implosion
Offense has been good but the pitching has also been outstanding
unsung hero of the season so far. 14 starts, 6-2 record, 3.3 era, 4.0 fip, 3.5 xfip.
and that's all skewed up by his relief work. As a starter his ERA is 3.17.

I was going to say what about the work of Trevor Williams who has constantly been shuttled between rotation and bullpen and not received consistent work.
2006 still seems like a vivid memory, but man, that is 16 years ago. my older kids were 3 and my youngest (15 years old) not even born yet. in those terms it seems like a lifetime ago.
this team has accomplished nothing yet, but I know I'm going to savor this, while also hoping *this time* they get it right and build some sustained success. One to three years competing with 7 - 10 not, is frustrating and tiring.

forget about next year he's making a case to not be taking out of the rotation this year. if they really want to give JDG extra rest they may want to go to a 6 man. or maybe just skip Walker a turn to keep him fresh.

Tricky part is we need to keep Max on normal rest...he blames extra rest and not enough pitching for his weak playoff performance

Vivid is one word for it I guess..lol
Crazy thing is Wainwright is still a very good starting pitcher even 16 years later...what a career

he's also been really solid and that role is even tougher.
62 innings (8 starts, 12 relief appearances) - 3.16 era, 4.02 fip, 3.98 xfip.
it's ironic that some think it would have been good value to trade one of this years top 5 prospects for a reliever after bagging the PCA trade that brought in baez plus 1.5 years of williams for a non-top5 prospect.
the only move from the deadline i really question is passing on Jorge Lopez. that one i just dont get at all. they were connected to him ahead of the deadline, he has 2 more years of control and the price was 2 borderline top 20 minnesota prospects (1 a 28 year old career minor league reliever). Povich is a 22 year old in A+ so if the price here was Hamel or Santos plus Drew Smith or Nogosek (or both) I'd have had done that.

i think you can keep Max on schedule and move everyone else around him. Walker and JDG are the 2 who may make sense for some extra rest (especially given Walker's last outing, he may make sense to skip a turn).

the 06 team isn't the worst comp and that group did have a decent 3 year run with 88+ wins each year. the core of beltran, wright, reyes, delgado was solid the problem was all the depth moves tanked.
the offseason and deadline moves give me a lot of confidence eppler won't make that mistake with the lineup and the talent coming through the system is much better, though i do think the bp is way too diaz dependent (not unlike those teams were too wagner dependent).

Otto and Heilman are actually a pretty good comp..never thought of that ..lol
The Duaner injury doomed that team..threw off all the depth since they had to trade Nady. But Ollie was pretty solid so always hard to envision the what if..
Lugo and May are the key for us...of they can pitch like they are capable, the bullpen can be a strength, not a liability.
May looked good last night. I think he approaches that Contreras ab differently if the game is tighter.
it wasnt far off - clippard when acquired had been oakland's closer so he was more like adding robertson would have been.
blevins and his re-injury when they were expecting to get him back was as big as duaner's injury. when healthy over his met career he was as good as otto/lugo this year.
in 2015 they also picked up reed/oflaherty in waivers deals, so they were more aggressive adding depth. robles was very drew smithy/trevor may.

Could ottavino go in situationally? Maybe we see Ngosek too? I don’t want degrom going over 70 pitches today regardless of the lead.

He threw 31 pitches yesterday, so not sure if he's available today. I suppose it's possible he could go in to get a batter or two if needed. Yeah, I don't see degrom going more than 5 innings. Hopefully they score 10 runs today and don't have to worry who closes out the game!
May threw 16 and had 2 days off prior so id think he will be ok.
Diaz only threw 7 pitches so i'd think he's ok too since he had friday off.
givens threw 2 days in a row so id imagine he's out.
so maybe the plan is JDG goes 5, joely/medina 6/7, May 8, Diaz 9.
if there's a blowout either way joely and medina will eat a lot innings. medina last pitched 8/2 and he threw 2.2 innings.

Makes sense Eric. We all hope though that the Mets' tradition of scoring 1 or no runs for deGrom does NOT continue today though, lol.

Edwin Díaz becomes the 1st pitcher since at least 1901 during any 25-G span to allow 1 R or less, have 50+ K, and allow 3 BB or fewer.
He has struck out 54 of the 92 batters he has faced over this stretch (58.7%) ‼️
Historically Impressive 🔥
That sends Walker/Peterson/Megill to the BP. On paper that shores things up quite a bit. I know all SP's don't adapt to the Pen great, but like I said on paper things may look much better than they do now for the Pen. Thoughts
Yes Eric, they should have traded a Vientos for a good lefty reliever. Just because Alderson made a really bad trade last year for Baez didnt mean they couldnt make a good trade this year for the one piece they needed

Definitely the Mets plan and explains why they kept their prospects and did not go all in on relievers at the deadline.
But the problem is Megill is injured. DP is still needed as a 6th starter (because of how the schedule falls out) and Walker might be hitting a wall.
Also, despite Mets great record, they still have to fight for the division because of the Braves. So they don't have the luxury of experimenting with these guys in the pen.
Gary even commented that they had never seen DP throw that hard.
Might be because of the extra rest. But he is a different pitcher when he throws that hard. Braves have some big RH bats and DP handled them nicely.

At Citi Field today for deGrom's home debut. Sun has reappeared, game will start at 4:30. One note of interest as deGrom makes his 200th career start: MLB record for most K's in 200 starts is You Darvish at 1,517. At 1,511 deGrom needs seven K's to surpass that total.
He did not look healthy at all yesterday…
Cohen does everything right !
Now stay healthy !!
