Chiefs cut CB Deandre Baker

Anakim : 8/7/2022 9:22 am
Kick the tires? :P

Adam Teicher

@adamteicher
The Chiefs released CB DeAndre Baker, a former first-round pick by the Giants. He was down on the depth chart after the Chiefs drafted Trent McDuffie, Josh Williams and Jaylen Watson and traded for Lonnie Johnson.
There aren't any tires to kick lol.
FStubbs : 8/7/2022 9:23 am : link
Maybe someone will throw a flier on him because he was a former first rounder, but I think he's near or at the end of the road.

Yep and points to how difficult scouting is. Apple and Baker two highly rated CBs that were total busts.

True, but (not trying to polish a turd) didn't Apple have one year where there was a glimmer of him showing "shutdown" promise?

Knew Murphy was better then Baker in that draft except for DG that moron

At least his wikipedia page doesn't list Cooper Kupp as his dad anymore
We’ve all seen some bad first round picks in our day

But baker takes the cake. Aware he was a late first but what a mess of a player.
No interest al all

Being a first round pick of Dave Gettleman doesn’t carry the same weight as being an actual first round pick. So all expectations should be lower.
NYG ignored his red flags
JonC : 8/7/2022 10:47 am : link
and got burned. At least they cut bait quickly after he started screwing up. Awful draft ...

Dex & Love were the best picks from that draft.

What sucks is we traded back up into the first to get him. So we waisted extra resources on him too boot.
And for some Reason

I think he’s going to be a commander. Just like flowers. They will try to get something out of him.
A bad dude but wasn’t Baker scouted as a top press corner and brought

if it was the same scout that overlooked Apple’s holding penchant , and Baker’s slow reactions and off field issues , that sold JR and DG?
Yet EA is still in the league is, odd!
Will be one or two more seasons

Before the stink of Dave Gettleman is completely gone from this team

Apple is a terrible NFL player.
Baker isn't a NFL player period.

From my memory it was Greedy Williams that was getting all the talk. But I could be wrong. I just remember not being that high on him and it being an opposing point of view at the time. With that said i still would have taken him over Baker at the time.
Kind of fun to look back at that draft class...
rasbutant : 8/7/2022 2:01 pm : link
The Good.
I had at one point called DK Metcalf a top 6 player and someone how should be on the radar for the Giants.

The bad
I had JJ Arcega-Whiteside as a 1st Rounder

Other takes...
Josh Allen LB as 2nd best player in the draft after Bosa
Said Rashan Gary was a 2nd rounder
I wanted Montez Sweat instead on Dex, but I did quickly grow to love the pick.
Was high on Rock Ya Sin, he went about where I thought though
I also thought Julian Love was a high 2nd Rounder.

Soon as Oakland took Ferrell, I started to believe that Josh Allen was a possibility and started to chant his name. I was a Jones fan, so I got over it, but it was a let down for sure.

touchdown maker.
Baker
AcidTest : 8/7/2022 3:53 pm : link
won the Jim Thorpe Award for the best DB in the country his last season at Georgia. The NFL is also a passing league. And yet he was still available at #30 when the Giants stupidly traded up for him. Why? Because he already had known character issues. The rumor was that many in the Giants FO wanted to draft Murphy-Bunting, but that Shurmur wanted Baker. As someone said, aside from Lawrence and Love, the 2019 draft was a disaster.

Worse there is no reason to think Baker wouldn't have been there at 39 or whatever the pick was if they had just stayed where they were.
I wonder if mom still got that Bentley

Same can be said about 2018.

DG was the worst employee the Giants ever had

100% agree. He makes Handley look like a rockstar.
I bet he’ll be quite the flipper

On the burger grill though.
Baker came back from a rare and terrible injury.
Big Blue Blogger : 8/8/2022 4:47 am : link
There’s no way to know whether he would have amounted to anything with the Chiefs or elsewhere after the Giants cut bait. But give the man some credit for making it back on the field after fracturing his femur.

As much as I hate Dave Gettleman, the Baker pick barely makes the list of his top screw-ups. It was a calculated risk, and it didn’t work out. Even the trade-up wasn’t that bad. If you look at what was available at #132 and #142, those picks were basically lottery tickets: nice to have, but very unlikely to produce any difference-makers. The Seahawks did relatively well with those two picks, getting two backups, Amadi (still around as the backup nickel) and Burr-Kirven (probably done with a knee).
