I got sucked into it last night and watched all three episodes. I guess if you asked me what came to mind before watching it, I would’ve probably said there was a lack of water and something about people lighting fires. I was 14 at the time and listed to a lot of the artists whom performed there, but I really had no idea what it was like. It’s hard to believe an event like that could’ve been so poorly organized.
Did anyone else see it? Is it accurate? It would be interesting to hear from some who are more local and aware, or there might even be some attendees here.
I thought he cared about the planet?
The news cycle was a bit different back then. It's not like I wasn't alive or had any interest in what went down.
I don't know if it was or wasn't swept under the wrong and don't mean to imply it. I just found it very odd the documentary barely mentioned it.

which I think were way under reported.
really? I recall quite a bit of coverage in the initial aftermath. But they eventually faded from the news since, IIRC, most of them were impossible to prosecute.
My statement was based off what I saw in the documentary. I barely recall any of the news of that event when it happened. The documentary barely covered it, only mentioning one incident that occured.
so then what are you comparing the coverage of sexual assualts in the documenatary to? Subsequent coverage years after the event? Other documentaries?
My last reply mentions this, but talking about the documentary. It barely mentions it. It only described one incident and it got all of about 5 minutes of discussion in a 3 hour documentary.
I know it doesn't even compare, but I went to a few Warped Tours way back in the late 90's around the same time @ Randall's Island and some of those were total shitshows. I remember coughing up literal dirt for a few days after it.
It was sweltering hot. I could never imagine being completely engulfed in a Woodstock-sized crowd in heat like that. I thought it was cool as a kid, but holy fuck.. you could never even pay me to do something like that now.

How was that experience watching it live on TV?
I remember going to a friend's house and waiting in the living room while his family watched it on TV. Looked kind of cool at first but remember thinking "I wouldn't want to be spend my summer day/night watching this." Then again I was 14 going on 15.
I did own the tape on VHS when it came out. 1999 was just a busy year for me and I remember very little down time and never being bored with so much shit going on.
It just felt like a big "thing."
I believe it was that same year - a few months later, I saw Rage, Gang Starr & At the Drive In @ Nassau Coliseum.
At one point when Rage was playing, everyone in the seats basically stormed down into GA at once like an avalanche. I almost got completely swept away in it. It was wild (and incredibly dangerous.. lol). Great show, though.

ha, I was there as well and totally remember this. Insane. Never saw anything like that at an arena show.
Agreed. That was horrific what they pulled that night.
Completely nude? Yuck. No one needs to see that.
Where Woodstock was about peace and love, '99 was about exploitation and greed. The documentary talked about how the organizers cut corners, locked everyone inside the grounds without allowing them to bring food and water, and then tried to extract every last dollar from us. It was stupidly hot, like 95+ everyday, the two stages were miles apart, and water was $4. That's a lot in today's dollars and this was 20 years ago.
The bathrooms were disgusting. I did my best to avoid eating that weekend, because I didn't want to use the porta-potties. One day, all I had to eat was half a watermelon... for $10.
I went with a few friends and one of them tried to get up close to the stage to see Sheryl Crow. That was at like 2pm on the first day. We didnt see him again until the next day. He told us he kept asking security to help him find the purple flags (where our tent was setup) and they kept telling him nonsense. Go to the north gate (meanwhile there was no north gate). They enjoyed fucking with him more than helping him.
After three days of being tired, exhausted, and exploited... they gave everyone candles for Under the Bridge. Honestly, really cool moment. But giving us fire?!? One section started a bonfire. And then another... oh, and your bonfire is larger than mine, that's not cool... gotta make mine larger. And repeat...
Then this was somewhat glossed over, but the entire weekend, there were rumors about someone following the RHCP for the Jimi Hendrix tribute, which was advertised on the schedule. Sure most people had wild expectations... but it was being advertised as a thing to see. All it was was the RHCP coming out and closing their set with Fire, of all songs. That was the nail in the coffin. People snapped.
Yes. There are no words for me to adequately express just how much I hate that band. I will walk out of a bar or establishment if they're playing their music. I can't tolerate it. Everything about them annoys me.

Just like a Met game...
You must be a RHCP guy.
You must be a RHCP guy.
We both know what you are
Sorry I said mean things about your favorite band.
Have a good night.
Imagine not understanding that this is basically a running joke between my friends and me because we all share the same disdain for RHCP.
You RHCP guys really are sensitive! Goodness.

I too think they suck.

Good. You're off the hook, then.

Nice try you embarrassment
America should apologize to the world every time that garbage gets loose overseas.
Enzo's point is correct too - the stages were literally miles apart. Most of the bands I wanted to see were on the same stage so it wasn't as much of a big deal for me, but if you wanted to go back and forth you had a helluva lot of walking to do in that heat.
A lot about the experience sucked, but I saw a bunch of great performances too. It was a crazy atmosphere but I was a 22 year old who thought that part of it was fun. There was some fighting and violence, but I never knew there were sexual assaults going on. I doubt most people did - there were half a million there, after all. I did not leave early as I was determined to see Megadeth, and they were the final act.
But yeah, blaming Limp Bizkit is the fucking lamest and laziest shit ever. For fucks sake, RHCP played a cover of Fire by Jimmi Hendrix while shit was burning down. But yeah, it was breakstuff -- what a fucking joke

Curious if this is just hating the bands music or thinking Kiedis is an asshole? Or maybe both. Kiedis definitely has a troublesome past. I have to say I haven’t come across many people who hate them so much that they will walk out of a bar if they play though, ha.
Weezer would slightly edge Fall Out Boy in the finals.
Weezer, Fall Out Boy Blink-182 and Panic at the Disco all in the final four.
I'd include Maroon 5 but that's just unfair to everyone else.
Then again there is Rage Against the Machine they're fucking garbage LOL
Wow. 7 hours later I forgot about that awful band Staind. That lead singer guy is such a fucking jerk off it's not funny.
Creed, obviously, would be another one up there. Pretty much anyone who got big in the early '00s was trash - Staind, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Disturbed, etc.
And those of us with taste accept and can spot those without it by instinct. It's like vampires and werewolves.
When someone reveals they are a RHCPs fan, you can be certain all kinds of other lameness is right around the bend.
What makes these characters exceptionally annoying and dangerous is their ability to bridge the tasteless across generations.
They are an advanced species of annoying.
And just when you think they've been relegated to the halls of bad memories and bad times, Keidis jumps back into our lives like a rabid talk-funk-rapping little jack out of a box of pain.
Relationship of Command still kicks all these years later.
Christian... it's funny you said that about the Flintstones. I always said that too. All I hear is "yabba dabba doo" whenever I hear Kiedis.
Also, I think some of you guys might be taking my post a little too literally from before lol. As I said, it's more of a running joke between my friends and me that RHCP is just a cue to leave if we are somewhere that's playing them–none of us can stand them. If I'm genuinely enjoying myself somewhere and a RHCP song comes on, I'd more likely just roll my eyes.
If there's a RHCP cover band or something, that's different though. Not sitting through that.
I hate those guys voices the most from the FOB and Panic the most. Just unbearable time to be in your teens and 20s in the 2000s because all my friends listened to them.
Blink-182 sucks big balls but I think they can get bounced before the final four .... if I actually took the time to do a bracket. Weezer blows ass and all of their songs are garbage. Annoying voice with stupid "woah woah wosh" chanting.
Then when they "went down hill" in the 2000s and disappointed their fans was the funniest thing ever. There is a difference between this and their "classic" Blue Album days? Nah. They just suck as much ass with different songs.
Wow. 7 hours later I forgot about that awful band Staind. That lead singer guy is such a fucking jerk off it's not funny.
Agree on Aaron Lewis. Guy is a total fuckwad.
One of the very worst.
(Again)

Isn't he a country singer now?
I’m getting a kick out of these responses. Definitely Fred Dursts fault, lol.

The organizers did a horrific job planning this and then want to put all the blame on Fred Durst? Give me a break.

I’m not a Durst fan, but blaming the artists is lame to me. The vendors were outsourced, it was a million degrees with no shade & water was $4 a bottle. Blame the organizers.
Kid Rock went on before Limp Bizkit and encouraged fans to throw water bottles.
If you want a calm crowd, why invite those types of bands? The promoters of the event didn't give a shit, well they did about one thing ... Money
I remember my mom talking about how it wasn't peace and love like 69 and it made me love the event even more lol. We were no longer living in those times and the same goes for 1999. I did watch the documentary and everything in the footage looked like a million years ago.
It's summer of 1999, and to think Limp Bizkit wouldn't play Break Stuff is silly.
One thing I did forget was how people got mad at MTV for playing the Backstreet Boys videos haha and they should "give the people what they wanted" instesd. They played Korn, Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock videos frequently. It's just teenage girls overwhelmed the TRL phone lines. and lol at Carson Daly. I forgot he existed.
There's no way the RHCP don't bring a curse along with them.
The utter amount of suck they bring assuredly is the reason bad things happened.

As I said before, there's far worse than them. They'd be an early exit in the "worst of" bracket.
I've heard these bands and songs so many times in the last 35 years I cannot tell if I like anyone or hate anyone anymore.
