Before the regular season. KG has a base of $13.0mm, a cap hit of $21.1mm and trading him would accelerate close to $18mm, so there would be cap savings of about $3mm give or take. So it’s doable from the Giants perspective and would avoid a lot of dead cap in 2023.
My issue is that the trading partner will look at Golladay’s base of $13mm and think it’s unacceptable. (That’s how bad a signing this is. The Giants absorb all the bonus amortization and it STILL looks too rich.)
So personally I don’t like the odds of it happening are low but think that Schoen should be working the phones trying to make it happen. What do you think?
What players and/or picks are you suggesting the Giants send to get another team to take Golladay?
The Giants would save a net 13M against the 2022 cap, and have 8.15M in dead money charged.
In 2023 the Giants would save 18M, but incur the 10.2M in accelerated bonus money for a net savings of 7.8M.
In 2024 the Giants would save 18M with no dead money.
The acquiring team would owe him.
2022: 13M salary (10M guaranteed)
2023: 13.25 non-guaranteed salary, 4.75 in u-g bonuses
2024: 14.25 non-guaranteed salary, 3.75 in u-g bonuses
2025: Void with no cap implications
That's a very fair deal for Golladay.
2022 dead cap: $7.9
2023 dead cap: $10.2
2022 cap savings: $13.25
It doesn't really make sense to trade him at all this year unless it was close to the deadline. If he's producing his contract actually isn't that bad with the increase in WR money we're seeing. His deal is 18th in AAV and 20th in guaranteed money.
I'd rather see him stay on the field and producing vs trading him and having to find a replacement.
The reason Golladay is an attractive trade target is because the Giants would eat all of the risk on the contract.
A team acquiring him would be effectively giving him a 1/13M prove it deal (with only 10M actually guaranteed).
If the answer is no, then Giants should be looking for a team with a Gettleman GM to trade with.
There is a middle ground where he's not worth it for us because of cap implications, but is worth it talent-wise. At this point, his dollar cost to us is the same as for a team trading for him. The signing bonus is a sunk cost and is not relevant going forward, except in calculating whether he is able to be cut/traded. However, his talent may not be good enough under a cap challenged crunch.
I've only seen last year's play of G, and that play screams not worth keeping, not worth trading for. I'm guessing he isn't traded, and doesn't have a rebound year, meaning he's cut after the season.
How exactly did Golladay not get a "real shot" last year?

Why would we want to trade the one tall receiver we have. Yes, he's coming off a terrible year but he was injured all season. Can we give players a REAL SHOT before we cut them off at the knees please?

He basically started the year off hurt and only played 7ish full games with Jones. The first 3 games he was still hobbled so obviously he needs to stay healthy. However, when you only play 41% of the season with the starting QB under an OC who got fired I think we should see what happens. Hopefully they can all start the season healthy, and we can get a chance to see what this offense can be.
Still might not be good but New Orleans was the only glimpse of what KG, Toney, SB, and Jones could look like together.

I want to see how this guy does playing at least somewhat healthy before I throw him away. We are so damn quick to just want to get rid of players after a bad season. Heck, Mets fans wanted Diaz gone by any means necessary after his first season. That would have been a brilliant move! I still remember watching Golladay in Detroit and thinking that he was exactly what the Giants needed. Im willing to give him some more games to see if he can fulfill that promise.

He was injured virtually all season...
On the other hand, I have to imagine Daboll/Kafka have enough experience to figure out how to best incorporate KG into Jones's game. That's what good coaches do. But they are in an environment that is much different than coaching Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
I would absolutely endorse a trade and moving on. I just think the market may be dry or very narrow right now.

Amen. This online fanbase has PTSD and have lost their collective minds...
Lol what? If anything the complete opposite is true with this fan base/team. This is the cherished land of "give this subpar player another few years in blue" and their endless supply of excuses.
So many losers here have had an "upside" and we have a bench with untapped Victor Cruzs Bradshaws and Palxicos lol.

So if he is injured again this year, does that mean he wasn't give a "REAL SHOT"?
The guy was given every opportunity to do something when he played. Except for one game he did bupkis.
Besides, who else do you want to spend his $10M base on this year? Do you see anyone out there you want to pay that kind of money to? I don't.

We are rebuilding. Golladay is oft injured and closing on 30. He won’t be around when we are a contender. He may be useful to another team.
The cap savings for 2023 and beyond are the benefits of trading him. That matters.
