How much is Winks defense going to help the o-line

Giants73 : 8/8/2022 9:55 am
Actually improve. Seen year after year young linemen not be able to pick up stunts when the games begin. How much of the last two years is Grahams vanilla defense in practice affecting the young kids growth, where they were seeing basically bull rushes every down.

Have to think Wink not only helps the defense but improves the communication the offensive linemen have to prepare for more than one on one reps.
Dealing with Wink's d in practice should help the o-line some. I

can't guess how much.
Winks defense should stress the OL in practice

Can't hurt
Better players will make the O-Line better...
Klaatu : 8/8/2022 10:12 am : link
Especially if the starters can remain healthy and develop a high level of cohesion.

Honestly, I think Wink's defense will put more pressure on the QB's, RB's, and TE's to step up their games, avoid pressure, pick up blitzers, etc.
I've wondered the same thing about DJ
csb : 8/8/2022 10:12 am : link
Hopefully seeing so much pressure in camp will help the game slow down when they begin playing less aggressive defenses. He's been uneven in camp so far but hopefully Wink's aggressive defense will help DJ feel more comfortable under pressure. Likely it's just wishful thinking though...

I've thought a lot about this. I think it is going to help a ton.
Other ways Wink's D will hopefully help the Giants O

Good point about the benefit of the O practicing against them, and the D should also get off the field more quickly on avg., compared to recent yrs., resulting in the O having more possessions, higher TOP and probably getting the ball with better field position on avg.

Also, assuming Wink's D gives up fewer points compared to recent yrs (his Raven's D was consistently at the top of pts allowed), not having to frequently play from behind, should also help the O.
great thought

smart post
What is a concerning....this "new" technique
George from PA : 8/8/2022 11:30 am : link
I do not know enough about blocking techniques.....but new OL coach always seems to bring in a new technique.

I understand the starting OL must be on same page, gel etc...

For example

Why not allow Thomas to improve his previous techniques....vs introduce a new one.
Good competition should help everybody. Or at least size them

properly as to who is an NFL caliber player and who isn’t.
The way it will help is with communication.
robbieballs2003 : 8/8/2022 11:34 am : link
This OL should be communicating great by now, let alone when the season starts. I can't imagine going up against Graham's defense in practice. No wonder Hernandez couldn't pick up a stunt.
can't hurt

Remains to be seen how much it truly helps.
How about the D getting off the field after 3rd downs ?
JoeMorrison40 : 8/8/2022 12:00 pm : link
And not being exhausted in the 2nd half cause you were on the field for 2/3 of the first half.
I'm sure it helps some
Gatorade Dunk : 8/8/2022 12:10 pm : link
Although I'm not sure it's necessarily a matter of what scheme they're going up against in practice, only because I'd hope that our coaches actually put in some prep for the opponents' schemes rather than just practicing their own systems against each other, regardless of the opponent they were preparing to face.

Where I think it helps is just the overall level of coaching (and talent) being improved creates a situation where the players are practicing against a more prepared teammate on the other side and they elevate each other's game in the process. But if the Giants' O was only facing the Giants' D scheme in practice (and vice versa) the past couple of years, no wonder neither side of the ball had any clue what to do when faced with any sort of wrinkle in an actual game.

The Giants' first half TOP wasn't as bad as you think. The defense was generally failing because they were less talented in key areas, not so much because they were gassed (not to mention all the extra conditioning they should have had because of Judge's laps).
Well, our starters do have some talent,
Simms11 : 8/8/2022 12:18 pm : link
it’s a matter of learning how to pick up stunts and in some cases technique. I think the D will help this Oline and they will eventually get it together. It’s only been a few weeks. I’m sure by mid-season we’ll see a vastly improved Oline.
I go back and forth on this.
mittenedman : 8/8/2022 12:40 pm : link
Thrilled Wink's here and I believe he's arguably the best DC in the league.

However, installing plays and getting meaningful practice reps against a Wink D seems difficult. The looks he's giving are not preparing you for the regular season. He's a unicorn. He is not a call off the dogs guy and he's got a job to do too, as he's reminded Daboll.

He is angling for a HC job and he needs a dominant D to get one.
Very good post
Optimus-NY : 8/8/2022 12:49 pm : link
Te communication on the OL is sure to improve as a result. Ultimately though, it does come down to talent.

Sharpens Iron. I believe it will help a whole lot honestly, and that is because our offense won’t be surprised going up against any other aggressive defense will have seen it all

Ha, I was thinking the opposite. But I really cannot decide.
If practice resembles game speed
Alamo : 8/8/2022 2:06 pm : link
It will definitely help Jones, and all the other players..I can only give one instance in my 80yrs of walking on planet earth..I learned how to play tennis starting at age 32..At age 35,I was pretty good..I have never been fast of foot..Enjoyed playing in some tournaments,at WVU etc..Liked playing partners..That helped me because of my slow running ability..I was,and am still in good shape..5'10" 165lbs..So back to my tennis..We were to play a match against 2 HS kids..I practice against college tennis players,so I knew what then could do as far as foot speed goes..So we start playing against these 2 HS kids..Both played really well..We got beat, but not because of they played better tennis but because one of them was a Football RB,and he had 4.3 or 4.4 speed..Wecould not hit a ball past or drop shot that he could not get to.
His speed made me lose the match..Never ever played against anyone that came anywhere near the speed of this kid..So I know personally how speed kills in sports..DJ and company better learn real quick, because if they can't handle our defence in practice, it will be a long year again..
And for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
HopePhil and Optimistic : 8/8/2022 3:13 pm : link
Just as Grahams defense didn’t get better practicing against our woeful OL, is it possible that Wink’s defense looks better than it is going up against our work in process line with 3.5 new players?

But all things being equal, it’s got to be better to practice harder and smarter. The staff seems to be on right track for sure.
One would hope it helps,
