NFT: Reds at Mets Game 3 - Walker

Optimus-NY : 8/10/2022 1:05 pm
1:10 pm EST start at Citi Field

Mets have won the season series against the Reds already (4-1). Today is the last game of the series as well as the season against the Redlegs. Tomorrow's an off-day. Hopefully Taijuan Walker responds positively to his previous start.

He texted me after Thor's debut and said "The Phillies are interested in deGrom to join Wheeler and Thor in Philly"

I have to admit, that was pretty funny, though the thought made me nauseous

The thought of Jake going to Philly makes me nauseous. It would be like Lt joining the Eagles. I think I'm gonna be sick.
lol Votto.
Optimus-NY : 8/10/2022 2:57 pm : link
He got in the way of that pitch fine, but couldn't block that ball on the throw to first costing his team a run.

Walker is okay today but IMO Peterson

Didn't realize he grew up a Braves fan. Makes sense though, as he grew up in FL.

Just no Braves/Yankees/Phillies for me. Though it would make me sick to see him in any other uniform. He is one of those players you pay to have him retire as a Met, even if it's a bad contract. This is the stuff I hope happens having a billionaire superfan as the owner
Here's Taijuan's pitching line so far today through 6 innings:
Optimus-NY : 8/10/2022 3:12 pm : link
91 P (56 S)

Will he start the 7th?
Walker should not start the 7th
KDavies : 8/10/2022 3:16 pm : link
6 and done, as I said from the beginning. He is one guy you need to conserve his innings. He will be needed in the bullpen likely for the playoffs. If there are injuries (knock on wood), he may be needed to start.

Especially now, having broken the game wide open
Would be 11-2 if Alonso didn't break for home before.

Joey Votto needs a change of scenery...

Boy, does he look disinterested.

No team will take on his contract, of course; and the end of 10 year contracts are often bad ROI's.

He's owed..

25 million in 2022

25 million in 2023

20 million in 2022

Ouch, but nice work if you can find it.

To be fair he was great from 2007-2018, MVP in 2010, but now, it's ugly to watch.
I feel like the praise for Lindor this year among Mets twitter is
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2022 3:39 pm : link
a lot less loud than the criticism from last year.

Hopefully Lindor doesn't look like this at the end of his monster deal ending in 2031. He's 28 now and would be 37--a month shy of 38 actually since his birthday is in Mid-November--at the end of it.

Trevor Williams is out there for the 8th. Guessing Medina gets the 9th. Might need Trevor in three days on Saturday for Jake. Let's see.

love to see them look into Dom (and likely some cash) for AJ Puk. Dom would get a chance to start, back home in California, and he and Puk are the same age. Puk has more years of control but he's also a non-closing RP. Dom will make 4+ next season so the Mets would likely have to kick in money (and/or another "prospect) but I think that's the kind of move that might make sense.

Votto is 38 (39 next month) and still has two years on his deal, so 40 in his last year. Lindor will be a few years younger during his last year.

Then again, lindor plays a much more demanding position….

Love your thinking on that one. A's would be a good fit for Dom. Goes home to CA, less pressure, gets full-time PT. He could really flourish there and the A's could use some cost-controlled position players. And Puk would be a huge get for the Mets. Would throw in another player or two of the Otanez/Lee/Plummer variety to get it done.

Yeah to be clear, when I say prospect I don't mean absolute trash but "filler"... like the names you mentioned. Dom simply has no future here anymore. Alonso is the every day 1b, Ruf and Vogelbach signed for next year + Vientos. Puk would fill an organizational need (no clear lefty reliever on the horizon internally).
Mets may have found something with Medina

even if just a quality back-end reliever. Wonder how the Phillies, with their bullpen issues at the time, let him go. And I also wonder why the Pirates traded him for cash. He is looking good.

Palka 45 extra base hits as a rookie including 27 homers, .778 OPS... still amazes me how short his leash was, and how few chances he's had since then. He has to look at Vogelbach and wonder if he might be able to do the same with some team.

Speaking of Dom having no place, his only real chance may be if (knock on wood) Alonso gets injured. If Vogelbach is out, Palka may step into his role.

Palka has a .523 OPS vs lefties. Against righties, in his career in the majors he has a .749 OPS, with 27 HR in 415 AB. Palka right now may be the Vogelbach insurance. Lefty that only hits righties and can't field.

Anyone remember how good Tim McCarver broadcasting games? He was a good announcer too right? I also remememer Kiners Korner. They got like $100 cash or something for being on the show. Was that really a perk though for even an 80s ball player salary/

Anyway, Mets fans have been particularly lucky with their broadcasters. I hate it when the game is on espn and you have their shitty announcers doing it.
