How did Thibs and Neal look?

BestFeature : 8/11/2022 11:50 pm
Outside of Jones and maybe Saquon I feel like these are the two guys we were most curious about. I missed the game. Did they both play?
In my opinion

Neal played well in Run game and he got turned around on one pass play where he gave a sack. Other then that he held his own.

Thibs- I didn't see him make one tackle. I did not see him make one QB pressure. He didn't stand out to me tonight.

I thought Neal struggled

Thibs looked good but didn’t make an impact.

Neal was completely off balance in different ways almost every play. Have gave up the sack. Should be good learning experience for him.

Neal struggled with balance at Bama too. Something to keep an eye on. Maybe they should have him take ballet classes next offseason?
Papa called out Neal for a bad play, but it wasn't his fault

It's never Papa's fault.
Thibs drew a false start

- he wasn't in very long, but it's clear the opponent was aware of where he was.
Thanks guys

Ha!
There was one running play where

Neal released downfield as a lead blocker. He had a chance to blow somebody up but pretty much whiffed.
Neal is going to be just fine

That’s exactly how I saw it.
Rewatching on NFL+

Neal had a shaky night, but I'm not too concerned since it was his first game
Thibs game last night

highlights what an incredible rookie season Ojulari had last year. When he gets back and grabs more of the defense's attention, Thibs play will improve.
From my amateur eye Neal played to his scouting report
arniefez : 8/12/2022 8:50 am : link
He struggled at times to keep his feet moving and it caused him to lose engagement and his balance on passing plays. But he's an NFL rookie and only 21 years old. It looked like he was thinking too much and not playing fast enough - again a rookie playing his first ever pre season game, nothing to worry about IMO. I didn't expect him to play like an All Pro day one.

His scouting report also said he's got power, speed and is nasty in the run game. You could see some of that too. His run blocking - again to my untrained amateur eye - looks ahead of his pass blocking at this point. But if he plays like he did last in game 1 of the regular season compared to Nate Solder he'd be Art Shell.

I didn't watch Thibodeaux that much but he didn't stand out. I remember he had a pass rush that he tried to turn the corner but didn't get home. Again nothing to get excited about but nothing to worry about. Its pre season game 1 out of the way for both of them. They'll probably play more next week against better competition since the Pats didn't play their 1st team.
Look at Neal on this screen play

Giants haven't been able to run this at any point I can remember. That's 6'7 345 coming at you and Barkley is hiding behind him.

Unrealistically

And Naively I expected this kid to never have a bad game; to slide seamlessly into dominance. Ahh to dream, perchance to dream.

The first preseason game means next to nothing.
Not a ton to go on

Neal showed some power in the run game, and got confused in pass pro versus stunts. He's got to learn to keep his feet moving and stay on them, as we was on the ground a few times not unlike at Bama.

Thibs drew a false start, and showed that he can find the ball. Pats actually mostly ran plays away from his side too.
They looked like rookies playing in August of their

first year.

They'll get better, and if we are fortunate will show some impact later in the season...
I believe I read that they are modifying (improving)
PatersonPlank : 8/12/2022 10:17 am : link
Neals technique, plus of course he is switching sides. The OL coach said these two things are why he is a little off at times, but they are very encouraged. Sounds a lot like Thomas last season
