This taunting rule sucks

Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/12/2022 10:08 am
I'm sorry, that was bullshit.

So you can choreograph a celebration (including a team celebration in the end zone), but you can't raise your hands in celebration after knocking a pass away (which other Giants did by the way and didn't get flagged)?

Someone mentioned that Robinson looked down while he did that.

Boo fucking hoo.

This is a joke.

Every preseason refs over call certain things the league wants to crack down on. Then when the regular season hits it’s no big deal.
It's not even a case of the "No Fun League".
Optimus-NY : 8/12/2022 10:16 am : link
The concept is ludicrous. Yet another reason to drive fans away from the game.

Yep, exactly. No big deal...
Knowing the taunting call was idiotic, was the only highlight Robinson
carpoon : 8/12/2022 10:21 am : link
had the entire game. NE spun him around like a top.
i thought it was close
dabru : 8/12/2022 10:22 am : link
but he did direct his "celebration" towards the player at the end. That's been against the rules for a few years at least.
As far as the rules go,
barens : 8/12/2022 10:34 am : link
I fully expected the flag to come as soon as the play was over. You can argue that the rule sucks and it's a horrible, no fun league, etc, but that was taunting.
If he turned his back
Joe Beckwith : 8/12/2022 10:34 am : link
to the receiver there would have been no call.
33 was toasted on that drive, and much of the time he played as the WR ran by him and was 2 steps ahead by the time he turned to try to catch up.

Agreed. He’s a young player who is stepping up into a starting role. Better to make these type “mistakes” in the preseason and learn from them.

Robinson needs to learn to not give the refs opportunities to throw the flag in your direction. Savvy vets know how to get away with stuff.

It was a BS call
bigblue1124 : 8/12/2022 10:53 am : link
I watched the replay a few times and could not believe that was called if it wasn't in the endzone it would not have been. If 17 caught that pass, he would have been dancing around with no call. The NFL wants points could care less about defense. They did abuse AR last night but that was a crappy call.
Another thing you can thank John Mara for
sb from NYT Forum : 8/12/2022 10:56 am : link

“That’s something we discuss every year in the Competition Committee,” Mara said. “We get kind of sick and tired of the taunting that does go on from time to time on the field. We tried to balance the sportsmanship with allowing the players to have fun and there’s always a fine line there, but none of us like to see that. It’s just a question of whether you can have rules that can be enforced and without taking the fun out of the game too, but nobody wants to see a player taunting another player. I know, I certainly don’t. I think the rest of the members of the Competition Committee feel the same way, too.”

The Entire Game was a Joke
dairborn : 8/12/2022 10:59 am : link
Calls on both sides were just garbage. Some of the illegal contact penalties...there was nothing there. It slowed the game WAY down and was getting annoying. The roughing the passer call that went in our favor was trash. The rusher moved his head over and hit with the shoulders in the chest. What more is he suppose to do?

And the officiating crew was moving in slow motion. I've seen better jobs by high school refs and I'm not joking.
I’m sure the refs hate calling this stupid rule

But that call on Robinson was a bit much. They are going to do that especially in the preseason though.
The Poor Quality Of The Refs

Did you not watch NFL games last year? That was called all the time. And if the receiver had caught the ball, and stood right above a prone Robinson and did the same thing (and let's be honest, likely said something) it most definitely would have been called.

I'll never understand the need athletes have to, at the end of a play, embarrass a guy they just embarrassed by beating him. It is simply a "look at me moment". It's stupid and selfish, especially from a guy like Robinson, who has proven nothing and was getting torched last night. Go celebrate with your team.
It was over the top...
bw in dc : 8/12/2022 11:25 am : link
The product gets a little more unwatchable every year.

The roughing the passer call on the Pats defender last night was equally absurd. Guy had a textbook tackle on Webb while Webb was simultaneously releasing the ball. In essence, the penalty was for a perfect tackle...
The rule is fine. The application of the rule is the problem
Snablats : 8/12/2022 11:30 am : link
That wasnt taunting, it was a terrible call

As others mentioned last night and today, the refs were really bad in the 1st half for both teams (I didnt watch the 2nd half)

It’s not a penalty.
So if wide receiver catches it for a TD he celebrates

Plus, he hit the QB just as he was releasing the ball. If a call like that goes against the Giants everybody would have a psychotic break.

And why is acting like a five year old just having fun? I remember when sports was supposed to teach sportsmanship, but I guess I'm just another grumpy old man.
Yep

Total joke. And I don't know a single fan who agrees with the NFL here.

Congratulations! You've uncovered a league-wide conspiracy.

Not many fans are aware of this but when the NFL refs get together for their meetings, they don their black, hooded robes and discuss which NFL owners are responsible for the rules they don't like.

The refs then all agree to get back at each NFL owner by excessively calling that specific penalty against that owner's team.

Either that or it was just a bad call.
It's a good rule in theory.....
BillKo : 8/12/2022 12:25 pm : link
...but it makes it impossible to enforce consistently.

Case in point is last night. IMO, it was not close to be worthy of a call. Even the NE announcers agreed. Unless of course the Giants player also said something, which we do not know.

I like the rule taking out all the BS between plays and just keep it to football, but it really puts refs in a bad spot and it will cost a team a game.

Also, not a fan of the excessive endzone stuff. But hey, it's a new era we live in and us older NFL'ers need to get used to it.
In the ref's defense...
sb from NYT Forum : 8/12/2022 1:21 pm : link
...they don't want to be blamed of being arbitrary, so they don't want to use their discretion over whether some action is worth a penalty.

So no gray area: they call it over the slightest thing (like celebrating a good defended pass) or a full blown "Mother F'er" at the other player.

The really stupid thing is that its an ejection-worthy offense, akin to throwing a punch. Please.

Just a point of fact, the NE announcers were wrong about a lot of stuff all night that they had to take back after seeing replays.
I for one hate the taunting
Dave : 8/12/2022 2:18 pm : link
bfd the wr didn't catch the ball, you have to celebrate as if you just won a big game?? And you have to do the 'in your face' bs to the opponent?? no, not in the spirit of good sportsmanship

impromptu celebration after a big play, ok, but it has gotten out of control with the 'look at me, what a great play I just made'

it started with the U, and has gotten worse and worse, imo

and forget about the choregraphed nonsense, that is just plain stoopid
I don’t like the rule,
Section331 : 8/12/2022 2:19 pm : link
but Robinson was jawing at the WR on the ground. They’re going to call that every time. He’s got to be smarter. It’s best it happened in a preseason game, he’ll never do it again.

They want defenders off to the side when taking a QB to the ground.

The Pats guy clearly had his helmet and full body weight pretty much belly to belly with Webb, and while I didn’t think he did, it can be looked at as driving the QB into the ground with his full body weight. I believe that’s what he was called for, and not the timing of the hit.
It was definitely a joke!

Marty in Albany : 8/12/2022 11:47 pm : link
In football, I had always thought that the taunting rule was not put in to avoid hurting the feelings of the tauntee, but to prevent fights.

Getting flattened is accepted by players as part of the game. However, when it is followed by "Get up sissy" that might cause a fight and get players ejected which nobody wants.
