Phillies have been hot but the Mets have been hotter. Let's keep this train rolling! LFGM!
Very upsetting to me to see him in a Phillies uniform. Can't imagine he is happy about it either..
Curious to see how crowd reacts.

I don't know all the details, but it seems to me it was Thor's decision to leave the Mets. From what I recall, he took a deal from the Angels that wasn't much better than the one the Mets gave him. It also seems to me Thor and his agent could've gotten the Mets to match if he/they really wanted to.
Based on the above and the fact that he was kind of a tease, I don't have a real positive attitude about Thor now.
Zack Wheeler OTOH, I wish was still a Met and he probably would be if Cohen owned the team at the time instead of the Wilponzi's.

But he always hated Philly...getting traded there wasn't his choice.
And seeing favorite Mets play for Phillies is just tough for me personally.

+1. I feel the same way, but right now at least, he's not the same pitcher he was when he was a Met. Perhaps he'll regain his previous form in the future, but he's nothing special right now.

I know beggars can't be choosers, but this announcing crew is awful.
But I blame that run on the douchey home plate ump. Max might kill him lol.
I hate this.

It’s weird. And sometimes it’s like watching a video game. Tough crew to call the game.

I'm grateful to able to watch the game, but the announcing crew is terrible, especially the woman. ( I apologize if that sounds gender biased or insensitive).

Why would he not be happy about it? He went from a nowhere situation in Anaheim to a playoff chase in Philly. As far as loyalty goes, he isnt a 12 year old fan, he is a pro...when he was a Met, he hated Philly. Now he is with Philly, so he will hate the Mets. Thats how this thing works.
Exactly. Cohen would have had all the info already or at least explained it 100 times better.

Just checked again - they have an O. Lopez in for him per the field tab. So, yes Vientos is out

Nevermind lol. O. Lopez was a Buffalo player on 3B.

I already miss GKR. How is a game this important not on SNY. Fuck that
No doubt. Pleasure to watch and have on the team.
I think this is one of the games you pick for him to go to the 7th
My money’s on 2 more. He’s a horse and won’t want out. No reason he can’t go 110

I feel exactly the same way. He's a smart guy too. I read an interview he gave, I was very impressed with how articulate, well spoken and thoughtful he is. He talked about being brought up to be a good person. He emphasized that several times, just be a good person.

We kinda need hm to go two today and to provide energy, leadership, and intensity on the mound against these upstarts. Gotta keep 'em from being down after losing Squirrel and Escobar.
Vientos and Baty still playing at Syracuse, but two other infielders were pulled from the game
Exactly. Mets needed a short inning there. Time to put the screws to Suarez now.
@AnthonyDiComo
For those thinking about longer-term injury coverage, the Syracuse Mets have removed infielders Gosuke Katoh and Deven Marrero from tonight's game against Buffalo. Mark Vientos is still in there.
[quote] to not play vientos. if they call up these guys it will go exactly the same way as blankenship and plummer and lee and all the other non-MLB'ers they've called up. vientos could do just as bad but why not try the guy with, you know, talent? even if there's only a .01% chance Vientos has an Alonso-like impact right away, isn't that better than guys who have a 0% chance?
+1. That makes sense to me too.
I dont think he is though. Another reason why he isn't up

Alvarez isn’t up because he’s not the real deal? Perhaps it’s because he’s a 20 year old catcher
Oh Crap
Would you have sent him home on that ball?
That was about as shallow a fly ball as it gets. Frankly, it was moronic to send Marte.
My thinking too. Not hit deep enough.
Oh Crap
Would you have sent him home on that ball?
100% yes.
a) it was a tough catch so the LF didn't really have a chance to get in position - he had to get lucky to catch it with momentum in the right direction like he did.
b) marte is hard to double up with anything other than a perfect through.
the play that guy made was full speed and high difficulty. tip the cap.
Oh Crap
Would you have sent him home on that ball?
Exactly. It wasn’t even that great of a throw. It was a bad call by the third base coach…which happens a lot.
vogelbach's ball had a .770 expected batting average btw, so it was not only a great throw but a great catch.

100% no
a) the LF was running in to catch the ball so he had ALL the momentum.
b) in no way was it a perfect throw. The ball was caught five feet off the plate in the other direction and was still out by a good margin.
It was a bad call all the way.
Of course bats go dead vs the Phillies..
Not a panic here..just crappy.
I can't handle any pressure in the standings from the Phillies in the standings...still kicking my wounds from 07 here. Ugh

Yea I didnt respond right, I should have been more specific to base running and defensive stops.
He's the real deal when it comes to the bat though.

Wow, you cant get anything right. It was an easy play at the plate on Marte with an offline throw. No way should he have gone

Maybe he doesn’t score anyway but he was NEVER going to score unless they threw the ball away. It was a bad throw and they STILL easily tagged him out. Cora is a bad 3B coach.

Cora has made a bunch of head scratchers this season. A 3B coach certainly isn’t going to make or break a season but that was a moronic call.

he played 3b last night and on the season he's played 40 games there, 26 at 1b, and 13 DH. 12 total errors in 66 combined games in the field. his GB rate was an early issue (70% in april) but has steadily been coming down (now 47%). even with last night's 3k game his k-rate has been going down too (now 30%).
random but with vientos at 3b last night Baty played left field and gunned a guy out at home on a line just like that philly LFer.
Syracuse Mets @SyracuseMets We’re down 3-0 in the 7th. But let’s take a moment to appreciate the absolute cannon of @baty_brett as he cuts down a runner at the plate from LF ☄️💪 - ( New Window )
just sayin'
Rory, its called extra innings, not OT
Marte made a good throw, Nido just whiffed on it.
i get it if there's no opportunity and MLB guys are producing. Nobody is suggesting an open scholarship. But for 2 months he was mashing while Dom/JDD were doing literally nothing and now their 3B may go on the IL a few weeks after they acknowledged publicly they were preparing to call him up. he's had a .900+ ops for the last 3.5 months. is it so impossible that he'll come up and do better than the .660 ops Escobar has posted ytd?
i know, dont want to throw him into big games vs braves/phils, yada yada. im sure katoh's .227 ba at AAA is going to be a big help. there's not even an obvious 40 man move (sam clay?) to make room for him.

Bad send/Marte decision, Nido stops running, Marte with a bad throw home

Nido admitted he turned it into an in-between hop with bad positioning because he thought he had less time for the tag. So the throw was better than I thought. Unfortunately I couldnt go back to see it a few times because you cant DVR Apple TV games
As I said before, Nido isnt good on plays at the plate. He can throw runners out and can frame pitches, but he isnt good blocking balls and isnt good on plays coming home
Wow ..he might be the best 3b coach in baseball. I think he just made the mistake of not realizing that Marte has lost a step
their guys made a play, nido dropped the ball. that's the game. the phillies aren't known for their defense in a good way but yesterday it won them a tight 1 run game while our guys had a defensive miscue.
also if they don't send canha is up with 2 outs which is by no means a given so that's a chance you take every time with a fast runner. any small miscue or off line throw and you win as opposed to the odds of a 2 out hit (Canha is hitting .289 with 2 outs RISP, which is great, but still lose 2/3 coin flips). statistically speaking 70% of throws from the OF aren't getting marte from almost anywhere in the OF.
you can see that at the distances both of last nights sac flies were attempted, runners are usually held however when sent they are still far more likely to score than not score. both were fast runners. one team made the play against the odds and the other didn't.
obviously a shorter throw and a more aggressive send lowers that, but i still don't think the % of Marte not being safe ever gets close to the 70% chance Canha would have made out with Marte on 3rd.
Are Third Base Coaches Too Hesitant in Sacrifice Fly Situations? - ( New Window )
There was also a more recent article, that I can't find now, about 2 weeks ago. Maybe it was in The Athletic, reiterating the same thing. And if I remember correctly, last year a number of Mets runners were thrown out at home. Does anyone else remember that? Was that Cora who sent them, or Gary Disarcina?

When you are out by that much on an offline throw, it was a bad idea to run. And no amount of fangraphs charts and analytics crap is going to change that

But this loss had a lot to do with Nido’s horrible play and base running as anything else. I am so ready for the Nido “starting catcher” experience to be over. I’m confident in saying that Alvarez would be an immediate improvement from day 1. Nido is a good defensive backup and that is it. He’s a net negative.
+1. This "ghost runner" rule is awful.
Part of why I disagree with the decision to send Marte, was that Cora must have know that the next inning would start with the Phillies having a runner on 2nd base, and to not take that chance. The Met still had one more out left in which to score, why play fast and loose in that situation?
Quote:
Was @ Citi last night. The extra inning rule with the dude starting on second base...lame AF. I get MLB doesn't want games going 6 hours, but that rule is so stupid.

That’s a really good point and I’m sure that factored into Cora’s decision to send Marte.
I’m back-and-forth on the ghost runner rule. On one hand I absolutely hate the rule because I feel that it’s a cheap way to win, but on the other hand I like it because I equally hate 16 or 18 inning games. What leans me more towards the side of not liking the rule is that 16 or 18 in a games are really pretty rare.
im just saying that watching it live i thought it was a go on anything close because you have Marte's speed and you want to force the other team to make a great play. with the ghost runner in extras you just want to get the walk off while you have it after already using diaz.
every replay since i feel the same way, the philly LF just made a hell of a catch + throw. it was a difficult play with the game on the line and they made it. kind of like that crazy JDD pick at first base a few weeks ago that went our way.
