Malik Willis debut

gogiants : 8/12/2022 10:24 pm
Willis played the first half of the Tennessee game on Thursday. Looking at some highlights and reading about it, it sounds like He is what they said he was. He demonstrated his ability to run with 38 yards on 5 rushes which included a seven yard touchdown run. He showed his strong arm with a 48 yard completion. The longest one so far of recorded preseason stats. (https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/stats/player/passing/nfl/preseason/all/.

On the minus side he was pulled from the game by coach Mike Vrabel for not passing the ball. This on a play that he ran for a first down after picking up like 17 yards. He supposedly held the ball long and was too quick to run. However he did walk away with an 88.1 passer rating on 6/11 passes.

He will be a fun guy to follow in the preseason and how he develops. On the depth chart I believe he is listed as the third string QB. But behind Logan Woodside I don't think that will last that long.

not saying he won't be good per se
Giantsfan79 : 8/12/2022 10:34 pm : link
But as you said he was too quick to run instead of trying to pass and once teams game plan for his running and scheme to stop it, he may have trouble staying in the pocket and passing.
So he’s extremely mobile
Brandon Walsh : 8/12/2022 11:47 pm : link
with no idea how to navigate an NFL pocket or read a defense and wont touch an NFL field when it matters any time soon. Just the same reason every team passed on him until the third round.

Good post troll.

That's using the word "debut" quite loosely.

Preseason games are glorified scrimmages.

Nothing matters from a performance standpoint until the games count.

I loathe talking about stats from preseason. Even about our own players, much less some backup rookie QB on the Titans.
Willis
Archer : 8/13/2022 8:25 am : link
Willis's performance was mixed and came against the third team defense.

He missed his first few passes badly and was inaccurate and took a long time in the pocket.

He mad a good deep throw late in the game and showed that he can extend plays with some nice runs.

I did not come away feeling that he had a great game.

About anything this kid does. I mean people were posting about him in a game thread and how we would rue the day we didn’t draft him.

31 teams still rue the day they didn’t draft Brady in the first five rounds.

And no need get so upset about posts that talk about other players in the NFL...there are lots of them.

It was a mixed bag, but the off-script abilities are pretty special. I liked how Vrabel pulled Willis because Willis didn't let a route develop by taking off too early. Of course, he did get a first down on the play for a first down on a 17-yard run.

So, there is a lot of fat to trim. But if it works, there could be quite a fillet mignon there...

christian : 8/13/2022 12:32 pm : link
Vrabel is a good coach. He wants to build Willis into a well-rounded QB.

He couldn't have gone to a better situation. He's going to learn a ton this year.

My opinion on Willis hasn't changed an ounce. He's going to be very good starting QB in this league.

Addition for the Titans. I do not have an opinion on how he will do in the pros, but again, an exciting addition.
Upside
Lines of Scrimmage : 8/13/2022 1:40 pm : link
is probably potential change of pace special package QB (possibly playoffs). Vrabel needs to get that team to the next level. Really good GM and since he came in they have averaged 9 wins or better 6 straight years. Mularkey had two 9-7 seasons before Vrabel. I was hoping the Giants looked at someone from that FO. They know what they are doing at the influencing position groups. Henry is one of my favorite players since Bama.

Reality is history repeats and in a couple years he is playing in the USFL. Worth a flier though round 3 seemed early.

The Baltimore UDFA QB looked good in this game from Oregon.
Willis is a raw developmental prospect with a lot of talent.
81_Great_Dane : 8/13/2022 2:19 pm : link
There are a lot of raw developmental prospects with a lot of talent around the league. Most of them don't pan out.

I don't watch a lot of CFB so I'm not that interested in the details of their progress — unless they are on the Giants. Personally, I'm much, much more interested in Roy Mbaeteka and even Sandro Platzgummer than Malik Willis, even though they aren't strong-armed QBs who can run very fast.

Josh Allen was nowhere near the QB he is today before his intensive work with Brian Daboll. Mike Kafka was well regarded across NFL. This isn’t a Ben McAdoo-type hire.

Didn't you post a meme about hypocrisy earlier today??

Isn't it the epitome of hypocrisy to call out any dupe account when you literally spent a year on this site under a different account when you were banned? Are you that dense to not get the hypocrisy of it?

Unfortunately, this is what BBI is left with - a previously banned poster going after other posters for no reason. Pulling your shenanigans which was an impetus for me to step away has been really refreshing, not dealing with repetitive arguments from the same fucksticks daily. That you are still here after being banned and calling out others is just comical.

I think '22 could be RT's last chance in Nashville, too. In 2023, there could be significant savings opportunities if they cut or trade him.

So, Willis's time could come sooner rather than later.

Tenn is tight against the cap in 2023 as well. So the stars are probably aligned for Tannehill's exit.

Getting a starting QB for less than 1% of the cap would be a boon for Tenn.

If he can play.
A rookie QB has always been a huge value.
Lines of Scrimmage : 8/13/2022 4:02 pm : link
About half the SB's have been won on rookie QB contracts since 2000. Eli, Ben and Tom Brady are the only three who won a second by their drafted team.

The problem is he is not a staring NFL QB. The other big problem is it is incredibly difficult to keep a team together and continue to draft replacements. As good as Henry has been he has to be getting up in the wear and tear dept.

This is what I think the Giants wind of doing and in the interim they fix the primary issues the past decade exposed.

Boon for any team for certain.

Tannehill and even Henry could be ex-Titans fairly soon if they can't advance any further in the AFC. Some dead cap hits on the horizon but doable if they can an up and coming QB to latch onto...

Tannehill isn't under contract in 2024, his contract voids after 2023. The Titans save ~18M if he cuts after this year.

Just making this up as you go along? You can probably count on one hand the number of BBIers who wanted to draft any QB at either 5 or 7 as it got close to the draft.

But, of course, you know that. Just looking to indirectly call out some of your favorite posters, huh...

Your obsession with me is adorable. But my memory is a pretty good one and there were plenty who wanted Corral (Terps being one of the more vocal ones) and many wanted a QB at 5 or 7, whether it was Willis or Corral. But many won’t admit to it for the sake of being wrong and how bad they misjudged the rookie QBs.

It’s ok - you can’t get them all right. Good effort though.

As I said, that thread isn’t asking to pick them with our rd 1 picks. In fact, many guys caveated these remarks to specifically say not round one.

I gave you the night to find a thread close to draft day that has, per you, plenty of guys wanting to draft any QB with 5 or 7.
