Malik Willis debut

gogiants : 8/12/2022 10:24 pm
Willis played the first half of the Tennessee game on Thursday. Looking at some highlights and reading about it, it sounds like He is what they said he was. He demonstrated his ability to run with 38 yards on 5 rushes which included a seven yard touchdown run. He showed his strong arm with a 48 yard completion. The longest one so far of recorded preseason stats. (https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/stats/player/passing/nfl/preseason/all/.

On the minus side he was pulled from the game by coach Mike Vrabel for not passing the ball. This on a play that he ran for a first down after picking up like 17 yards. He supposedly held the ball long and was too quick to run. However he did walk away with an 88.1 passer rating on 6/11 passes.

He will be a fun guy to follow in the preseason and how he develops. On the depth chart I believe he is listed as the third string QB. But behind Logan Woodside I don't think that will last that long.

All your favorites lined up nice and neat, huh? You would have more credibility by just saying Uncle...

There were posters who didn’t want one in the first round but I counted at least 15 that said something along the lines of “no doubt about it…”, “easy choice”, “homerun selection…”

Are you going to infer those posters wanted a QB in round 2 or later. Surely - you jest. You’re so adorable.

Chucklehead- there are many dozens of posters that know Jones is a waste of time so were desperate for the Giants to go with any number of QBs in the past draft. That doesn’t mean that desperation linked them to:absolutely locking in on one at 5 or 7.

Keep digging...you have more work to do.

I hope Willis does well except when facing the Giants, but my position then is the same as it is today. I did not think any QB in this year’s draft merited a 1st Round selection. That being said, if Daboll, Kafka, and QB Coach were all unanimous that, between this year’s crop and what could potentially be available next year, someone from this draft they could mold into next great QB then I didn’t have an issue spending Day 2 pick.

I have no problem acknowledging I wanted Willis. I think he's going to be a quality starting QB. Upwards of 25% of the starters in the NFL this year won't be 1st round picks.

Teams misjudge talent at QB. Forget about Brady, who is a once in a lifetime story. Russell Wilson and Dak Prescott are great, more realistic examples.

This is correct. From January thru mid April, many many "Jones sucks" people kept saying to take a QB at 5 or 7, and Willis in particular

It was only in the week of the draft, when every national and local writer kept saying the Giants werent drafting a QB and that the QBs werent going to go high, did the "Jones sucks" crowd finally move off taking a QB at 5 or 7

It is always going to be a position that fans follow the most so it is not a big deal. I mean armchair QB is around for a reason.

The only issue I take is the Giants issue the last decade has been about the deterioration and destruction of the physical nature of the franchise. OL and impact front 7 play.

When you look at Tenn. they understand this. So Willis is in a outstanding place to reach whatever potential he has. Hopefully we are talking about the Giants like Tenn. when it comes to that physical aspect soon.

The link I provided from a thread the day of the draft showed many posters still wanted to take the home run slot. There are still people who do admit they wanted a QB in the first round.

And yes snablets is correct - some backed off a QB cause ultimately they saw none being taken in the top 15 in most mocks. However - many posters still wanted a QB. Willis and Corral were the two favorites.

Always nice to see the members of the "Call Out Club" taking a victory lap.

In this case, it's for the '22 rookie class. Yet, no rookie from the '22 draft class has played a regular season snap yet. Strange.

Regardless, this topic on Willis came up the other night on the game thread. Same source. I have no problem saying I would have used the 5th or 7th pick to move on a QB like Willis. Despite what the market said during the draft, I still think it was worth the gamble.

That Willis is showing exactly what was known of him at Titans camp. He’s 2 years away from being a starting QB. He’s a raw prospect with a ton of traits. A project that we can’t rely on as a losing franchise.

The Giants are nowhere near ready for a QB. Maybe next draft or the following. I liked Willis, too. But the smart move is to build the team with people likely to certainly help this year or next and not a project that could take 2 to 3 years to develop. The Titans are good now - a playoff team. Good players all over the lineup. The Giants are short DBs, OL, WRs and TE.

I didnt go through all these responses, ,but are people actually saying that the Giants made a mistake not taking Willis because of his performance the other night? SERIOUSLY? Did anyone actually watch the game? I did. He was...OK. The one BIG play should probably have been a TD with a better throw. He is a very good runner. Still has a long way to go as a thrower and as a QB in general.

I don't think that's quite the case yet.

But Willis is a player to keep an eye on. The Titans got first round physical skills in the third round.
All of this based on a single preseason game

Way to early to decide if they are even decent. Obviously, pro scouts thought they were sh!t best case scenario backups or projects.

Remember the titans passed on him 3 times before selecting him. There’s a huge risk with taking a QB who has trouble reading defenses.

In fairness, people that liked Willis are just saying he’s worth keeping an eye on and also in a great situation. Not a single person is claiming a couple preseason drives will guarantee anything.

I suspect if he looked terrible you’d have a thread on how bad he was with plenty stating “this is why we were smart to pass”. And I’m sure he’s going to have a bad preseason performance so it’s only a matter of time for that thread to be created.
