we were supposed to go like three other times and things kept coming up. What a great movie. It’s the first time I have walked out of a movie in a long time and thought when can I go back to see it again.
Was spectacular. I went into it thinking it was gonna be corny, but i totally loved it.
Same here, whenever people hype up movies I feel like I go in with high expectations and walk out disappointed. This one was legit. I saw it in IMAX which I highly recommend for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet or is looking to see it again.
Wow. IT was awesome. Great action, a lot of fun, and the aerial footage was great. I loved the first movie as a kid and still loved it when I watched it with my son last month. I liked this one even more.
The production value was off the charts, but what impressed me most was the acting was far better than I expected. Really well done characters, and Cruise turned Maverick into a likable old veteran who was easy to root for
I’m about as big a Top Gun fan as there is on earth and this movie exceeded all expectations for me. And objectively it was better than the first movie.
If you have a ability to see this in ScreenX…. It’s fucking amazing. If ScreenX is not available in your area IMAX will do.
I hope they get some award love. They sure will for cinematography and the technical stuff but I really think this movie deserves love from the various award shows. So good.
Even back in the 80's, when all my friends loved it, I didn't care for it. I almost didn't go see the new one because of the original, but I'm glad I did.
It was sold out except for the first two rows. This is for a movie that's been out for four months. I haven't seen a movie get this kind of buzz for this long since the original Star Wars trilogy. Back then they didn't have to compete with 4K streaming. I'm sure they its being helped by the fact that everything else in the theatres is crap, but the run that its had is remarkable. Say what you want about Tom Cruise, the man knows his craft.
I haven't seen this one, but agree with PP re. the '80s one....never was a huge fan/didn't get the hype.
I served on an aircraft carrier in the early 80's so I am hardly objective about this. I and everyone I served with loved Top Gun. Although the story was over the top they absolutely nailed aspects of life on an aircraft carrier and beyond that life in San Diego. The sights and sounds of F14's launching and landing on an aircraft carrier were authentic. The attitudes and personalities of the junior officers, especially considering they were pilots rang true. If I had to guess why the first Top Gun was so popular among everybody else, I'd say it had a lot to do with the mood of the country during the Reagan years, Tom Cruise's personality and the great music. Did I forget to mention Kelly McGillis back then ?
As for the second one I expected it to be a success, but not to this extent. For someone my age the nostalgia an great 80's music is enough reason to see it. I'm sure its also fueled by being one of the first crowd pleasers since the pandemic and the fact that its competition is dreck.
Oh, I understand why it was a hit with Cruise being Cruise, McGillis as a smoke show, & the era in which it came out. I just was never a huge fan of it. To each their own as they say.

Most if not all theaters will only have 1 IMAX film at a time, so there's no competition at all. Most movies get 1-2 weeks run in IMAX and with Nope ending its run they re-released Top Gun (for the 3rd time) since demand was through the roof. However they are doing a limited run of ET this week and Jaws next week (I think).

Also want to thank Ron for his service. SFGFNC, throw out any feelings about the first film when it comes to this one. There is no cheesy 80’s stuff here, it’s a really good movie.
I'll always love the 1st one and thought it was better, but for a sequel they definitely did an excellent job
I respect liking the original more(I love it) but nostalgia aside Maverick was superior in almost every way IMO.
The way they filmed the flight scenes in particular was amazing, you felt like you were in the plane.
Yeah, that really impressed me as well. They must have very deliberately focused on all the aspects that would have a visceral impact. All of the activity inside the cockpit while Maverick was doing the practice run was conveyed so well to the viewer -- the facial expressions and groans of effort, the rapid-fire sounds of him manipulating all of the controls and equipment... it was just so well-executed and unique.

eric, I think the original was a decent flick, but never as good as some made it out to be. It cleaned up at the box office, but so have a lot of meh films over the years.
when a bunch of actual naval aviators love the movie in both enjoyment factor and in the actual depiction of naval aviation. I'm sure the movie will be a topic of many drunken conversations when we gather for our 20th class reunion and a bunch of drunken naval aviators start quoting lines from the original Top Gun and Maverick. Coincidentally, one of my buddies just took command of Navy's Blue Angels recently...pretty crazy.

I felt like their embrace at the end was not acting and Cruise seemed shaken and they used it.
