Rubber Game. Lets take this series. This should be another tough battle! LFGM!
The next 10 days has 4 with ATL, 4 more against the Phillies and 2 against the Yanks. I'm not making a prediction however hoping they play at least .500 ball

thats all that is needed
Oh gee.....look who's on the Mets schedule in September !!
Let's finish these next 10 days strong, and then take the NL East pennant and the first round bye.
He is a lot more aggressive than in the past.
I could tell in the very first inning of game 1 that they were also a little bit flat. Maybe the off day cooled their momentum. Baseball is such a game of group psychology
Oh gee.....look who's on the Mets schedule in September !!
Let's finish these next 10 days strong, and then take the NL East pennant and the first round bye.
September will be easy. They only play three teams that are above .500 at the moment:
The Dodgers (once), Brewers (3 times), and Braves (once)
*Dodgers in Queens once on September 1st (the last game of a 3-game series)
*Brewers in Milwaukee in a 3-game series &
*The Braves in Atlanta in the first game of a 3-game series, with it being the 5th to last game of the regular season.
Mets need to go .500 against the Braves (upcoming 4 game series in ATL), the Phillies (3 game series at Citi and 4 game series in Philly), Yankees (split the 2 gamer in the Bronx and get the tie-breaker over them in case of a QS matchup), and Dodgers.
Once the Mets get to September 2nd, it'll be a breeze. Gotta keep these teams at bay and continue to get healthy otherwise (Megill, Smith, Escobar, & McNeil).
Enjoy :-) and #LFGM!

The Braves pushed back both Strider and Morton and are starting several minor leaguers against the Marlins this weekend. It would be great if the marlins would pretend to have some pride today and get one game out of 4 against an Atlanta team missing a ton of players and resting others.
I have a feeling Drew Smith comes back full send.
1-0 in 2 starts vs. PHI (11.2 innings, 2 ER)
1-1 in 2 starts vs. ATL (13 innings, 4 ER)
if he can keep that going this start and his next against (likely in PHI again on Friday) it will go a long way to solidifying his #3 status.

The Braves won 14 straight early this year, playing teams like the Nats, the A's and the Pirates.

Pride is a foreign concept to the Marlines. That organization is a joke from top to bottom. We'll see them five more times this season:
*September 9th to 11th in Miami (3-game series) & September 27th and 28th (2 gamer) in Queens. Dog team and organization that should be tanking even more then.

Don’t worry. They’ll play each like it’s game 7 of the World Series when we play them in September.

Great point. He, Cookie, and Walker will be competing for it. We're also probably gonna a 4th starter to give us a start or two or hopefully three) in the post-season.

Yea and I can’t look at Wheeler and the Citi field without feeling a little bit irritated by the former owner. Shea wasn’t the nicest stadium but it was the Mets stadium.

Looks like that'll be it for him today with Trevor Williams up in the pen and having thrown 114 pitches last start.
he pulled his hamstring. with a 7 day IL and no other backup MI on the active roster someone is getting called up (and it's likely Katoh since he plays the most positions). He hasn't played much SS in the last few years but they haven't pulled Marrero from Cuse so Katoh seems like the obvious move.
the only question is do they also bring up Vientos to play some 3b or to have an option if they aren't sure about risking Escobar every day for the next week. there's no position player they'd deactivate but they could DFA medina (especially with Megill and Smith about to start rehabbing).

he really has. he'd be a good guy to resign to a reasonable deal for a couple years - not a lot of guys can as seamlessly go from spot starter to multi-inning reliever as he's done. basically designated 6th starter on active roster from BP.

YES! That is a big bonus if it comes down to it. He can't be available tomorrow.

of the 39, 6 are at home vs. WAS, 5 vs. MIA, 7 vs. PIT (4 home), 3 at home vs. CHC and 4 at home vs. COL.
these 8 are basically playoff games and those 2 teams are going to be desperate to win but if they can come through it whole they will be in good shape.
also cool right now JDG and Scherzer line up for the 2 vs. NYY right after these 8. Should be a fun 10 days of baseball.
Hopefully the bats can ramp back up here for these next 10!
PRIMARILY:
Louis G - How long will he be out? Who'll take his place?
McNeil - He's been in the lineup the last two days, but is he really ok with the laceration on his right hand (throwing hand)?
SECONDARILY:
Escobar - Same as Louis G.
TERTIARY:
Megill - back in late August/early SEptember as part of the bullpen and/or as a spot starter
Smith - early September (prolly gonna take Tommy Hunter's innings)
The Hefty Lefty!
That sounds about right. We do need him on the roster though. Next season, different story.
Vientos sucks so badly at 3B that he has only played there 3 times in his last 34 games, and Baty has 5 errors in his last 11 games at 3B
Vientos has already been moved off 3B and Baty is still a "may not stick at 3B" guy
Plus they need a middle infielder because without Guillorme there is no backup SS

Mets need to get over their absolutes in regard to fielding. The only question is will the guy's bat add more than his glove will cost? Wilmer Flores plays 2B and 3B for the Giants (who won 107 games last year)and Davey Johnson used to play Kevin Mitchell sometimes at SS. Why? because his bat over his glove was a net positive
I can pretty much guarantee that a Vientos/Baty platoon or semi-platoon will add more--bat and glove combined--than Escobar playing 3B every day as he did in the first half.
And it is for a short time. Catcher, SS, or CF I can see. With the corner positions, it's fine to have a mediocre glove for a week or two.
Walker vs Morton, who the Mets have hammered
Scherzer vs. Odorizzi
deGrom vs TBD.
Split is almost a must with these matchups, but a good chance to take the series

This is an enormous week - you dont take rookies who havent shown they can handle the position in the minors and put them on this big of a stage this week
Plus neither Vientos nor Baty can play SS, so who is the backup for Lindor? The Mets need a middle infielder, not rookie 3B who cant field in the minors

Sounds like the Mets haven’t ruled out the possibility of promoting Brett Baty depending on what Luis Guillorme’s MRI shows tomorrow. Mark Vientos, a right-handed bat, hasn’t been in the discussion.

For me, the 1988 starting rotation was the best. The backend of the rotation does it for me (Ojeda and Fernandez over Carrasco and Walker). 88 rotation over the 86 rotation cuz Coney was better than Aggy.

Sucks? Seems a little of an overstatement. Anyway, they can live with less than superstar defense during a Escobar/Guillorme IL stint if he produces at the plate.
Likely Escobar doesn't hit the DL. Although, in the broadcast they were saying Escobar right now can only hit left-handed. To me, it seems like Vientos might be the guy you want to be up to playing third against lefties.
Canha can also play there in a pinch and obviously would be the bat you want with Ruf in LF.

"We got us a New York switcheroo, folks!"
"While the Yanks have gone ice cold, the Mets cannot be stopped. They own the second-best record in baseball and have won 17 of their last 20 games. A key strength has been pitching, as no opponent has scored more than two runs in any of New York’s last eight contests. Only once in the last month has a Mets starter been knocked out before completing five innings. The rotation gets the ball to Edwin Díaz, who walks out to tremendous music and then slams the door shut."
"This is a pitching staff now running at full strength. Max Scherzer is dealing, Jacob deGrom is finally back and Chris Bassitt is eating high-quality innings. One of Taijuan Walker (3.43 ERA) or Carlos Carrasco (3.76 ERA) will not start a playoff game. We all remember what happened the last time a Mets team was this pitching-strong."

The Mets aren’t calling up Brett Baty or Mark Vientos to fill in for Luis Guillorme.
Jeff McNeil 302 minor league innings at SS, Gosuke Katoh 358, I wasn't kidding
i dont think that's it. to my knowledge that didn't change in the new CBA so anything service time related would be impacted next year not this year.
i think the new regime (eppler + buck) are just being extremely conservative with promotions. they've done a lot right but i think on this they are being very wrong. it's not hard to imagine where the braves would be if they didn't throw their 2 young guys into the fire straight from AA. they were 100% wrong about not promoting Vientos for a month in june/july pre-deadline, it's almost impossible to envision a scenario where he wouldn't have outproduced the 600ish OPS dom/jdd posted in that time period. and we are seeing what the upside could have been before our eyes with 3 guys who combined were hitting about league average now having a huge impact post-deadline by lengthening the lineup.
Quote:
Jeff McNeil has as much minor league experience at SS as Katoh, if you're really THAT concerned with the fact Baty can't fill-in as backup SS in a pinch (he can't)
Jeff McNeil 302 minor league innings at SS, Gosuke Katoh 358, I wasn't kidding
i see the point but i dont think they'd want to risk mcneil at SS right now and beyond that i think they also know they need to give him occasional nights off so while im 100% with you on promoting either 3b they need to do that AND activate a backup MI.
the mind-boggling part of this is that they are now trotting a banged up Escobar out every day which wasn't a great proposition even when he was healthy.
rosters expand in 2 weeks, there's 0 excuse to not pick whichever 3b they like best and give them a shot. if you don't want to IL Escobar then drop Medina. That is going to happen in the next 2 weeks anyway as soon as Megill or Smith are rehabbed.
they got too cute in the old school mindset of reliable veterans and all that did was waste time giving at bats to non-productive veterans who have no future here and aren't part of any solution.

hard to believe it was almost 15 years ago he was a met.
for today with Guillorme going on shelf the right move was activating a multi-position backup IF (obviously ideally it would have been someone better than Katoh though).
beyond today however they need to be ready to DFA a pitcher and call up 1 of the 3b even if it's just to try to make sure Escobar doesn't reinjure himself.
vientos is already on the 40 man and offensively ready even if they have a bunch of righties coming up. Baty is a little further off but brings better defense and better contact profile. the only wrong decision is not calling up 1 of them.

im going to choose to read into that with a shred of optimism. they can't possibly plan to play both escobar/mcneil banged up every day for the next 3-4 weeks and hope they survive. or give away 10% of their outs in games started by someone like Katoh or Marrero or Blankenhorn (who hasn't even played 3b in 3 years).
vientos is the only one on the 40 man and they don't really have a ton of spots to create either. Clay's spot likely goes to Katoh (or Marrero). But then Medina, Plummer, Lee are the next 3. but remember Megill and Luchessi are coming off 60 man IL, so Megill was almost definitely earmarked for the Medina spot if Medina even lasts that long before getting DFA'd for Smith or Hunter.

Marrero, 31, was hitting .236 at Syracuse. More importantly, he's capable of providing defensive coverage at second, third and shortstop.
there's your first same season met/duck dan!

I mean for just this moment... good for him. That's pretty impressive on a personal level to go from Indy ball to MLB in one season.
so i'd imagine if tonight goes the way of a blowout, it's Medina's ball then probably DFA'd knowing Williams and Joely are options for multiple innings again tomorrow and beyond if nec.

definitely. and they did need a legit backup SS. Escobar or McNeil healthy in an emergency is one thing but banged up the last thing you want to do is get them hurt worse playing out of position in a spot where they probably aren't good enough any more to begin with.
with the postseason eligibility deadline upcoming i feel like it would be smart to give themselves as many options as possible, your mauricio idea included. he's also on the 40 already. if lindor (or anyone) slams their finger in a door again they need to give themselves as many options as possible.
all the guys theyve added have been great but that's where i would have swiped someone like Kike just in case. i think he's about to get activated and assuming he's healthy again he'd have been a nice emergency policy anywhere.

While of course I hope they do well this entire series, I really hope that at the very least they hit the shit out of this asshole....
Me too. Never poke the bear.
