Okay, 3 oft injured pitchers and one in his late 30s.

Feel better? Lol.

There's no "let's only shop at the stays healthy store" in pitching.

That's why you need organizationl depth every year.

True, but what’s happening to the Mets right now should be the least surprising thing ever. And we’ve seen this movie before. Now it can bite them in the ass.

Exactly. And Carrasco and Walker were gotten at pretty reasonable prices because of it

Of course. Welcome to being a Mets fan. Going on 36 years now lol
And ALL pitchers don’t break.

That’s what people say to excuse their team when most of their own pitchers break because they sign pitchers with injury history.
Yeah idk what Dodgers were thinking...

Walker Buehler... How can you count on him?

Mets have great starting pitching depth . They also have an offense that SHOULD be able to carry them.

If they lose this one they gotta take the next 2 with Max and Jake and then worry about the Phillies when they get there.

They still need to score for those guys as well in order to win. And they weren’t exactly hitting well against the Phillies before this. We should be hitting these pitchers. Get the bat off your shoulders and swing the damn bat.

I'd never root for them. It just wouldn't feel right. Let's see what happens the next two innings, even though I think we know what the conclusion is gonna be already, lol.

You are right, Sir! I will try not to convert to Yankeedom over the next 2 innings. (I would never convert either. They broke my heart every year as they thrashed my beloved Dodgers. My first experience of unrequited love, and it's been all downhill since then)

The last thing we need is two nights to get rained out when Scherzer and deGrom are lined up. We'll be ok.
Michael Harris close to signing 8 yr/72m deal.

Mets-Braves rivalry should only intensify with the young talent and deeper pockets. Braves aren’t the Mets financially, but The Battery is a money printing machine. AA will be able to spend in FA.

How the fuck do the Braves get all these naive players to sign long term, team friendly deals? While the Mets get all the Boras clients to fuck us over or bleed us dry.

I think I hate the Braves more than any team in any other sport.

already on the ledge.

Teams lose games and go through funks, we really haven't had one all year...this might be the beginning of one for us.

It will make it all more exciting when they come out of it and go on another hot streak.

The Braves are a top 4 team
moespree : 8/16/2022 11:30 pm : link
It's not like they are losing to the Pirates.

I think the unexpected injuries in both games deflated the team. If they win the next 2, they split the series, the Braves gain nothing and it becomes much more of a lost series for the Braves than anything negative for the Mets.

Now if Scherzer or deGrom go down in the next 2 days then we can all panic.

There's some risk these contracts go bad especially the last few years of the Olsen deal, but the Braves should have a few years to analyze and anticipate declines in any of these contracts. The Braves are willing to front load non-arb/arb years for 2-3 extra years on the back end and possibly save $20-40m if these young players develop as projected.

Olsen, Riley, and Harris are "local kids" so maybe that plays a factor. Acuna should have waited a year before negotiating but he still signed for $125m over 10 years (2 club options at $17m/per). Ozzie should have never signed that 7 yr/35m deal.

Our draft choices telegraphed this. Drafted three high school arms in the first two rounds and a couple other over slot later in the draft. Lock up position players long term and prioritize developing frontline starters post-2025.

I'll do back flips if AA can sign Fried to a long-term deal before 2025.
Mets only have 1 homegrown starter, Braves have 4
Vanzetti : 8/17/2022 12:18 am : link
And Soroka is about to return, which gives them five.

Mets also don't have any top starting pitching on the immediate horizon. Allen, Tidwell and Ziegler are their best bets but they are years away.

As a consequence, they had to pay a king's ransom for Max and then sign guys such as Walker and Carrasco who are good but fragile. Then trade prospects for one-year of low cost Bassitt.

This is not sustainable. You can't go a decade and have Petersen be the best starting pitcher you produced.

It's all catching up to them right now

That said, Walker and Carrasco's injuries might be "fortunate"
Vanzetti : 8/17/2022 12:23 am : link
Neither of these guys was going to make it to November.

So skipping some starts in the Dog Days might ultimately be beneficial (especially since neither injury should linger beyond their return).

I still think Mets can hold Braves off for the division title but the hitters have to wake up and score some runs for Max and Jake.
it’s a long season
KDavies : 8/17/2022 8:17 am : link
baseball season is a marathon. There will be ups and downs. Look at how cold the Yankees have been after they were unbeatable for much of the season.

Bats went cold a couple games the same time injuries hit. Hopefully Baty gives them a jolt and they even the series up.
Getting real exciting in the East...only 3.5 games now, right?

I grew up a little upstate. I could've been a fan of either team, but in 1973 I thought the Yankees were the team of the past and the Mets were the team of the future! Stupid kid!

I blame my older brother and Tom Seaver.

agree. game 1 was maybe some bad luck with the rain/injury, yesterday morton was very good. but these are the types of games they will have in the playoffs and why winning getting through 3 series to win a WS is so hard.

also why it's frustrating they been so cavalier about giving away outs in the lineup at times this year.

For next season, do you see Baty and Alvarez up here at 3B and Catcher, respectively? Especially in light of how little production we're getting out of those positions offensively, or do the Mets wait until 2024 to promote them?
Alvarez

will 100% be part of the 2023 Mets. Will he be up opening day? Remains to be seen. Struggling pretty badly in August but both he and Baty will be major parts of the 2023 Mets roster.

Taijuan Walker received "pretty good news, all things considered" on his MRI, according to Buck Showalter.

Sounds like it's doubtful Walker can make his next start, but the Mets are hopeful he'll be okay beyond that. No structural damage.

The Mets have placed Eduardo Escobar on the injured list with a left oblique strain, as expected, to clear roster space for Brett Baty.

The team also designated R.J. Alvarez for assignment and called up reliever Sam Clay for a fresh arm.
