I need a comfortable pair of shoes for standing on my feet all day. I'm thinking something with a soft leather, not a hard, stiff leather. And not some good looking sneaker/crossover, it needs to be unmistakably a shoe. Any recommendations?
Although some new styles are hit or miss I've never had a bad pair of Ecco HELSINKI. I can take them to trade shows and walk 5 miles in them without a problem.
Milton, best thing you can do is get a decent show you are happy with
and then swap out the insoles with Super Feet insoles. Don't even c0nsider the crap things from Dr. Scholes. Super Feet come in different supports and usually a shoe retailer has a little pressure pad you can stand on showing where you need support.

I second the Helsinkis. I have cover 3 days of both SEMA ans CES shows without an issue with more than 25,000 steps a day. They are a life saver.
Have you bought them recently? I had a good pair of dress shoes before Nike bought them. Then bought 2 pairs after Nike bought them which were very comfortable. The one pair I bought after Nike sold matches the negative reviews I've read.

Sounds like we are on different sides of the same industry. I get most of my steps at Infocomm and Cedia
I like Merrills, but I'm not sure they have more traditional shoes. Clarks are nice as well. Standing on school floors... usually linoleum on concrete slab is tough on the feet. Sneakers / running shoes don't cut it.
I used to keep a pair of shoes in my office that I only wore at school. Nothing worse than sloshing thru snow or rain on the way in and spending the day with soggy feet.
I have three that I use regularly for work and daily use
For work I have Dr. Martens and Rockport both slip resistant I swap them out weekly for even use but they are life savors being on your feet for 10 or 12 hours a day. Neither are cheap but well worth the investment and hold up well and have many styles oxfords or loafers even boots.
For everyday use I have Irish Setter Oxford’s easily the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn. And trust me I have tried them all unfortunately they don’t make a slip resistant model otherwise I would use them for work. Not cheap but well worth it.
a tuxedo, and I also could run a 10k in them (assuming I could still run a 10k, but the shoes wouldn't be the problem).
I just got a pair of low-cut hiking boots from them as well. They sell directly online, just google them. You should figure out your size in Euro sizes though - the size is likely to be 40-something, not 10 or 11 (or whatever).
The Donald Pliner Hamiltons...
And the Ecco Helsinki 2.0 Plain Toe Oxfords...
They're both roughly $160. I'll keep the better fit and return the other. If they both fit great, maybe I'll keep both.
p.s.--Sorry for the huge images
Focus on finding a real shoe store with a salesperson who knows what they are doing. My shoe guy typically recommends dansko depending on what you need. Also, don't over look the sneakers when you aren't wearing your main pair of shoes.
I had so many foot problems until I found my local shoe store and got appropriate shoes (sneakers and dress shoes)

If you can get away with the white bottoms the Cole haan zeros mentioned above are my go to.
