Bassitt SP (11-7, 3.34 ERA)

Dodgers Lineup

Smith C
Muncy 3B
J. Turner DH
Lux 2B
Thompson CF
Taylor LF

Kershaw SP (7-3, 2.64 ERA)

Early 4:10PM start today. Would be great to take this series. Kershaw returns today but will be on a pitch count. As mentioned last night, Devin Marrero and Medina are the 27th and 28th players added. Good mews is we are on the verge of getting back Carrasco, Megill, Drew Smith, LG, and Lucchesi which will push some of these scrubs off the roster soon. LFGM!

Total team win.

Contributions all the way down the bench. What a fun group to watch. I believe this team goes as far as Lindor carries it. He's the leader. All the guys look up to and feed off him. He keeps it upbeat, positive and loose.

Yeah... we can play anyone.

Astros are the only team they have looked overmatched against, but I believe they were without deGrom and Scherzer. Still, if the Mets are still in it, I root for the Astros to lose, even (puke!) to the Yankees
Two enormous victories

if they can somehow get peterson or megill (or both) comfortable out of the pen they will have 4 really solid options.

mccann, ruf, and mehscobar all showed signs of life at the plate need and that continuing would be very big.

the alvarez injury may resolve that one for them.
Another HUGE win!

Braves are playing the Rockies again in Atlanta. It's scoreless now in the Top of the 2nd. "Lucky" Strider is pitching for the Barfs and Kuhl is on the mound for the Rox. Here are the standings now (Phillies are off today), not counting the Braves game that's in progress (a link for the box score to the Braves game is below along with a link to watch it):

last year the mets entered their final series with the Dodgers on August 12th 5 games over .500 and tied with philly for 1st place. The braves were 1.5 games back.

the mets lost the first 2 games in extra innings each by 1 run sparking a 5 game losing streak that took them out of 1st place and under .500. that series was obviously the last time they were in first place.

this year they lose a heart breaker on timmy trumpets night but come right back and in total team efforts win a 1 run game and then a 2 run game. run prevention, a hitting approach devoted to grinding at bats, and a well managed bullpen just helped win probably the biggest series of the year and they did it with just 1 RBI from Alonso and Lindor combined (who have to this point produced almost half of the teams runs).
Tremendous game

Ya think the might try a 6-man rotation w/ both Peterson and Cookie part of the rotation? Or will they start to experiment with Peterson in the bullpen from there on out?

Yep. Hope he's ready. He walks too many people for my liking, but he is a lefty....
I think they shift him to the pen now

A 6 man rotation does make some sense but my guess is they know Peterson will be in the pen in the postseason. Might as well get him more reliever reps as soon as possible.

The Mets are going from playing the team with the BEST record in MLB, in the LAD, to the one with the worst---the Nats. They have to be careful here so as not to take them lightly in this upcoming series though. A sweep is probably gonna be needed to maintain a 3 game lead. The Braves are not gonna let up. They're playing the Marlines in Atlanta tomorrow and over the weekend, followed by an off day, and then a quickie 2-game series with the Triple A's in Oakland.

You really believe them when they say
Debaser : 9/1/2022 8:42 pm : link
It’s just another game?

It seemed a lot different at the game Rockies compared with Dodgers. Dodgers is like a playoff game . Same thing when they play the Yankees
The Mets should be able to sweep the Nats

Where I think we start to pull ahead is when the Phillies and Braves battle it out for two series in September.
Tomorrow, our best relievers aren't available. We need a strong game

The Mets were GASSED when they played the Yankees in the BX the last time. It was the end of a 10 game road trip w/out any off days and a double header less than 48 hours earlier.

is not so much about the last couple of guys on the roster.

It is about how this team is obviously scuffling offensively, it's clear there needs to be something to energize this offense. I get it with Marrero, as he backs up multiple infield positions. And ok, you don't like Vientos' defense at 3rd.

But what if he comes up and doesn't hurt you defensively and hits? Escobar can be the utility guy, get the guy with the thunder in his bat. This team lost 1-0 to the Rockies with Scherzer on the mound. They scored 3 runs in a loss to the Dodgers Tuesday on Walker's start, and scored 2 runs in a win with deGrom last night.

Today it's the bottom of the 6th and they just got their 2nd hit (infield) and are down 2-1. *EDIT* 2-2 now after Lindor's double. Pete Alonso had a .754 OPS in the month of August.

Vogelbach, Ruf, and Naquin have all been scuffling as of late.

This isn't sustainable and they are in a division race, to say nothing about any chances of catching the Dodgers.

Something needs to be done and I don't care how you do it, but you have to find room for Vientos' bat in this lineup. You simply have to try. This team, as constructed, is going to need to score more runs to get where they need to go.

Its not happening. The sooner you and others come to grips that Vientos IS NOT COMING, the better off these threads will be. And you dont bench players in the middle of good seasons every time they "scuffle" or go cold.

WHAT?! Who said anything about benching anyone but Escobar? Escobar isn't "going cold," he's been cold all year. I'm just talking about getting a big bat in the lineup that the lineup sorely needs. I'm not sure where you come off with that last sentence. Odd statement to say.
Good news for those who didn't see it

Marte has arguably been the Mets best player because of his consistency and big hits in critical situations. He is a huge bargain at 18 million per, especially when you consider he has nursed a groin injury all year
I remember early
pjcas18 : 9/2/2022 12:39 pm : link
in the season someone (?) kept posting daily about how Marte had the lowest hard hit % or something like that in MLB.

I wasn't going crazy over the signing (good or bad), but I liked a lot about his game.

I think he seems like a good fit with how the Mets want to beat teams.

Good point about fit. You could say the same about Canha. Very valuable to the Mets because of how he fits with their approach.
