seems like the season just ended.
but less than one week training camp starts and just over a week before 1st pre-season game (I think 9/15 is the first game), looking forward to the season (even though it looks to be a massive rebuild in MTL).
still a few RFA's unsigned and some notable FA's still unemployed.
some players I think (could be wrong) are still available as UFAs are PK Subban, Zach Aston-Reese, Braden Holtby, Sonny Milano, Evan Rodrigues, and more...
But the extra flexibility outweighs the differential between the two, IMO.
Agree. for the money to Goodrow the Rangers probably could have signed Motte and a veteran top 6 D.
Better value
This has been the one constant through two decades of Rangers hockey - overpaying bottom 6 role players. They do this all the damned times.
Not sure, I guess they can sign the QO or just "hold out"
It would be awesome though if Jason Robertson became a UFA.
There are only 9 RFA's left unsigned.

#NJDevils sign Zach Senyshyn to a PTO.
Zboril, deBrusk, and Senyshyn.
you can second guess any draft pick, but those three received a ton of scrutiny because in the immediate picks after were Barzal, Connor, Chabot, Colin White, Samsonov, Boeser, Konecny, etc.
Like pj said, they can continue to holdout, but they don't become UFA's. Their status remains the same and they can sign at any time - until Dec 1, by which point if they haven't signed they're ineligible to play that season. (William Nylander avoided this at the last moment in 2018, holding out until reaching a long term deal on Dec 1). As far as I know, their restricted status simply continues into future seasons, at least until they hit 27 and age into unrestricted free agency (or the team rescinds the QO). If they're content to play in Europe (or just sit around), I guess in theory that QO could just sit out there for a few years, but you'd have to be pretty unhappy with your team to let it get that point. I don't think anyone else has even gone as long as Nylander did.
Basically kind of watching live barn with announcers (some teams don't even have a broadcast crew/announcers).
Biggest thing I noticed about the Habs is Slafkovsky is 237 pounds. Holy shit.
6'3" 237 pounds as an 18 year old.

Not.
I thought he played well next year. He's not going to be a star but think he's solid. Also wouldn't mind Robertson and him splitting time.
Hajek absolutely sucks - he shouldn't be on the roster.
I think Lundkvist is making a mistake not coming over. Schneider is not so entrenched he can't be beat - plus you always get injuries.
Not.
Clean. The puck carrier bears responsibility. Skating into the slot with your head down is on you.
I hate that.
Penalize a kid for a good hockey play because the other person was reckless.

Nathan MacKinnon, speaking at the NHL Player Media Tour, says his extension with the Avalanche is “pretty close” and he’s hoping it’ll get done “soon.” As for AAV, it will be “fair” but “not going to be a single digit.”

The Winnipeg Jets have stripped forward Blake Wheeler of his captaincy.
The Jets will not have a captain to start the season.
Stripping the captaincy seems like a big deal, though. Wheeler to the Rangers for Hajek, pls.
Old age. :(
It's a necessity IMO. I don't put that much stock into things like chemistry but hockey is a sport where you need everyone in the locker room 100% bought in on the system. And coaches cannot influence it enough on their own IMO.
When you read about players tuning out coaches or no longer buying in to a system to me it starts with the captain (and the coach who failed to adjust).
On a non-contender it should be a goal to pick the captain who will help lead the team into becoming a contender, so I get not having a captain for a brief time, but there should always be a goal to name one IMO.
And a bunch of A's is not the same thing. If you have 5 captains you have no captain (and only three players can wear letters in a given game I believe anyway)
One thing I thought was very interesting. Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield were being interviewed and they asked them if Juraj Slafkovský would be their linemate. Cole laughed and basically said I'll let the coach make that decision, but said nice things about Slaf.
Suzuki said he would have a say in it. If true, that is f-ing awesome IMO and to me that is what you do if you want to win the locker room (not that Martin St. Louis needs help, but that helps)
I couldn't stand the idea that one of the 85 Rangers assistant captains would need to be handed the Cup. It was dumb.
You need a bridge between coach and players, which the captain should do. The books on the '94 Rangers detail how important Messier was for that season. I'm sure there are other examples.
Xhekaj is a big dude. I think he could make the team.

The New York Rangers have signed defenceman Matt Bartkowski to a professional tryout
Lafreniere #10
Miller #43
Kakko #48
Schneider #79
Lundkvist #91
Othman #98
Jones #100
Slafkovsky #15
Caufield #30
Dach #43
I'd have Caufield and Miller higher. I also disagree with the writer saying Lafreniere's skating is below average.

How is Spencer Knight still 20? lol. Seems like he's been around for 5 years.
The main one who stuck out to me as off is Jiricek. He should be or will be higher. He's awesome.

Elliotte Friedman on Bo Horvat contract : It is not close, not progressing. Some people think it will be in the 6's, I do not believe that, in the very least in the 7's.

Lol
so that's a no? lol.
I don't know how voters vote. He's a 7 time AS, 1 time cup winner (and captain of the team), and 1 time Norris winner,
I don't know how that stacks up against other D in the HOF.
Sergei Zubov is in the HOF.
So, while Chara is clearly no Ray Bourque or Paul Coffey but I wouldn't argue with anyone who has him in Zubov's class.
ok, I feel better with that. Sometimes I think HOF but then you look at the stats or accolades and that don't match the perception. Chara's career clearly does.

Did Spezza retire already? He is the only other possibility.
Even still, he's 3rd from his draft class in goals (after Forsberg and Hertl), 5th in points and 3rd in games played
