NFT: NHL Thread: training camp less than a week away

pjcas18 : 9/7/2022 9:13 am
seems like the season just ended.

but less than one week training camp starts and just over a week before 1st pre-season game (I think 9/15 is the first game), looking forward to the season (even though it looks to be a massive rebuild in MTL).

still a few RFA's unsigned and some notable FA's still unemployed.

some players I think (could be wrong) are still available as UFAs are PK Subban, Zach Aston-Reese, Braden Holtby, Sonny Milano, Evan Rodrigues, and more...

How does Vegas
pjcas18 : 10/20/2022 2:13 pm : link
have a retro jersey? lol
The Devils hideous retros pay homage to their history as the Rockies

whats the promo campaign gonna be for that one: "Hey come watch us play in these unis, when last we wore these colors we were somehow even worse than we are now if you can believe that!"
3/4 of the reverse retros are in the meh to awful range
Diversify yo bonds : 10/20/2022 4:15 pm : link
The Sharks/seals sweater is terrific, the Wild/North Stars continues to be a winner, Panthers is so bad it's good.

Devils are wtf, who cares about the Colorado iteration?

Isles managed to make a bad jersey worse. Even the misguided milennials who like the fisherman hate these.
I can't decide
pjcas18 : 10/20/2022 4:27 pm : link
if the Red Wings, Blackhawks or Panthers are the worst. ESPN rated the Panthers #1.

I wonder if they pay a firm a ton of money to come up with these.

and the Karen and Vegas having retro jerseys is comical

I like the Kings.

lol

The Sharks' jersey also sucks.
It seems like the Devils
pjcas18 : 10/20/2022 4:44 pm : link
got halfway through their design and were told the Avs are using the Rockies logo and said "f-it, let's just throw the Devils logo on it"

big picture, who cares about retro jerseys, but if you're going to do it - do it well.

It looks more like the Kansas City Scouts jersey which the Devils franchise was briefly before they were the Colorado Rockies. Take a look at the logo of the Scouts and you will understand why they used their current logo lol.

I didn't think it could get worse than last years "Jersey" 3rd jersey but this is so much worse. It's like they told the designer to sum up Lindy Ruff's tenure here in a jersey design.
Slafkovsky
pjcas18 : 10/20/2022 8:22 pm : link
with his 1st.

Such a great play too, not a fluke or easy goal - he got a high hit from Josh Brown (6' 5" 230 pound journeyman defenseman), he looked like he was going to go after him but the the Habs created a TO and Slaf stole the puck and wired a wrister top shelf.

and then he called out Brown, lol.
Holy shit

Stu11 : 10/20/2022 11:56 pm : link
Suzuki with a sweet PS goal. Hey Don't look now but the Devs win 2 in a row! Jack gets his first, Palat with 2 and Bratt with a pair of helpers.
Bratt now has 7 assists on the Devils 12 goals this season. The Devils advanced metrics 5v5 are off the charts. Jack is tied for the lead with 11 high danger chances created. The Devils are first in the NHL in eg/60 when Bratt is on the the ice. The Devils have out shot opponents 159-84 so far in 4 games. Only 4 games, so nothing to get carried away over, but they start finishing and get decent goaltending maybe the season doesn't have to be so shitty...
You can tell
pjcas18 : 10/21/2022 7:44 am : link
Hughes is going to break out, he's been all over it in the games I watched. One of them it took a sick save to stop him (I probably mentioned it if I wasn't too lazy to scroll up and check who it was against)

Also Bratt led the fwds in ice time finally

Agree, what are they waiting for?
In April
pjcas18 : 10/21/2022 8:40 am : link
the Habs will be near the bottom of the standings, Jake Allen is a fine backup, but he's not a starter and Montembeau (the backup) is an AHL goalie (with upside).

but when you have a game where Suzuki, Caufield and Slafkovsky all score and Xhekaj drops the mitts it does at least put the plan in focus. Add in Guhle, Dach has looked really good, Monahan is healthy (worst case as trade bait), Harris is better than expected you can have some hope for the future. If Logan Mailloux can ever get past his crimes (in the court of public opinion now) the Habs have a lot of pieces in place.

Add in a Bedard or Mitchkov or Fantilli and they're on their way.

too much talent on a veteran team, they will figure it out. I like that Wahlstrom seems to be having some early success. One of my favorite players from that draft class. Needs more TOI.

100% right, As most of us said they should have locked him up for 8 years when they had the chance. Now instead of 6.5-7 a year he will probably want 8.

Some NHL updates
pjcas18 : 10/24/2022 6:05 pm : link
Carey Price - no plans to retire
Arber Xhekaj (pronounced Jack-eye) nickname is wi-fi because when players saw his last name spelled they thought it was a joke and really someone's wi-fi password, lol

Quinn Hughes out a couple weeks
Panarin leads the NHL in points
Rasmus Dahlin is developing into a superstar
Jake Oettinger proving his playoffs were not a fluke
Shane Pinto (OTT) still a rookie, off to a PPG start
Nils Lundkvist fits right in on the point in DAL

Phil Kessel
pjcas18 : 10/24/2022 10:13 pm : link
ties the iron man streak tonight. Amazing.

About 5 to 6 games in
pjcas18 : 10/26/2022 9:48 am : link
FLA 4 - 2 - 1 (9 points, 0 goal diff)
CAL 5 - 1 (10 points, + 5 goal diff)

no conclusions, but both teams off to good starts as expected

Vegas the big early surprise (to me) (6 - 2, 12 points, and a +10 NHL leading goal differential)

Once Lehner was out I thought they'd struggle in net.

Did you think the duo of Logan Thompson and Adin Hill was going to carry the team?
Yeah Vegas and Boston are surprises to me
Stu11 : 10/26/2022 1:46 pm : link
I thought both would take a step back this year. You kind of felt it was time for Vegas pay the piper for their win now cap decisions they had made. However Jay is right, Cassidy is an excellent coach and their young goaltending has come through. With Boston don't forget Marchant hasn't even played. Hall is playing some of his best hockey since his Hart days with 4 goals already.
Amazing stat with the Devils they are out shooting their opponents 2-1 every night. It's really unheard of for a team that's probably not gonna make the playoffs no? Bratt has 2 goals last night 12 points now I believe thats tied with Panarin for the league lead. Man if that guy gets 100 points that's gonna be a huge$$$ lost gamble for a Devs team that has been real proactive at locking up everyone else at below market value.
Josh Norris
pjcas18 : 10/26/2022 5:05 pm : link
might be out for the year.

My fantasy team (and Andy in Halifax and other Sens fans) weep. budding star in OTT. They're loaded but he's one of their better less known players IMO. Put up 35 goals as a 22-year old last year. he was part of the US U18 WJC gold medal team (2017?) with Poehling, Quinn Hughes, Farabee, Brady Tkachuk - and Norris wasn't a passenger on that team, he was a contributor.

Injured his shoulder this weekend.

when the Devils traded Ty Smith for John Marino but man am I happy to admit I was wrong. Marino has been excellent thus far while Ty Smith is still in the AHL.
I like Marino
pjcas18 : 10/27/2022 10:09 pm : link
just wish he was consistent. some plays he looks like Quinn Hughes and then others like John Marino.

Kaiden Guhle with his 1st goal tonight.

Marchand back early and immediately starts filling up the scoresheet - I hate him.

I thought the Flyers
pjcas18 : 10/28/2022 10:07 am : link
once they lost out on Gaudreau could be bottom dwellers, but so far Carter Hart looks like Carter Hart from a few years ago when he was a promising rookie.

I still don't think they're all that talented for position players, but Hart has been sparkling and a good goalie elevates all around them.

I know it's early - but maybe a goalie trade candidate if the Flyers decide to rebuild?

Ethan Bear
pjcas18 : 10/28/2022 4:04 pm : link
traded by CAR to VAN for a 5th round pick.

Seems like a good dude, but hasn't lived up to the potential yet, but still better than what VAN has right now.

Canucks blue line has been decimated.

I wish Joel Edmunson was healthy - great trade candidate from MTL.
Fun one out at the Rock tonight as the Devs beat the Avs 1-0
Stu11 : 10/28/2022 10:04 pm : link
Jack with a ppg midway through the 3rd on a nice feed from Bratt for the only goal. Those 2 have been playing together the past few with Palat hurt, especially on the PP. The Avs are one of the few teams that can make the Devs look slow at times. You guys were talking about Marino earlier in the day, he probably had his best game of the season. He was all over the place in his own zone. He was a big reason they held the Avs to 0-6 on the PP. The fire Ruff chants have died down lol.

like Slafkovsky suffered a concussion the game he scored his 1st goal - hasn't played since and he called out Brown because of the high hit just before the goal so it makes sense.

Hopefully he's back soon, he was looking good.

I think of him like McDavid but on the blue line. Every time he touches the puck it's like someone pressed turbo on the video game controller.

There was a thread on here a couple days ago about athletes you like to watch from other teams and I picked Kaprizov - as awesome as McDavid is, and he's in another world, Kaprizov is so fun. He thinks like Datsyuk, it's the creativity you just can't teach it's all IQ/instinct.

Obviously I love watching McDavid and Makar, but Kaprizov isn't as fast or great with his edge work as either, but man that IQ is crazy.
Canadiens
pjcas18 : 10/29/2022 9:52 pm : link
with a fun game in STL. It was almost like pond hockey but I absolutely love that MSL let's them play this way. the experience they are gaining is so valuable and will pay dividends.

They won 7 - 4, but goals from Suzuki, Caufield (2), Salfkovsky and a hatty from Dvorak.

Just a fun team to watch and I don't think the vibe would change in a loss and that's the key IMO to coaching a young team.

Wow hard to ignore the Devs at this point
Stu11 : 10/31/2022 12:54 am : link
They are leading the league in shots on goal AND least shots against by a wide margin. Early on the beef was the drastic differential in shots and chances was not resulting in goal differential. Well the past 3 games its been 14-4. They absolutely humiliated Columbus today 7-1 and out shot them 53-21. Now it's still very early and the schedule has been soft, but they do have impressive wins vs the Isles and Avs. They swing through Western Canada this week including the Alberta swing and then back home to play the Flames again so it will be interesting to see if they are for real now that the competition gets a little tougher.
Honestly the most impressive thing is not so much their fire power it is the way their D is limiting shots and chances. Nice to see Fabian Zeterlund net his 1st of the season today. He really has been buzzing. The one downer is that Holtz has been benched and the rare times he dresses lately its as a bottom 6 guy.
