Long way to go, but why I feel better about this coach

Ten Ton Hammer : 9/15/2022 6:08 pm
from the start was that he had experience. He had already been though success and failure and growth as a person and a coach, and I think this quote captures it well from a profile piece (pay wall) on ESPN.

He could obviously still flop, but bringing in someone who has pretty much done it all as a coordinator/assistant has to improve one's odds.

I like his approach. Even if the 2pt conversion on Sunday hadn't worked, I think people still would have liked the aggressive call. I also really liked the adjustments at half time. I am cautiously optomistic about the future.

The halftime adjustments are what impressed me the most. We haven't had that in a very long time!
It's just one game, but that is something to give some hope.
The call really grew my faith in him as a leader

for all his bravado Judge played afraid often. The worst combo.

Daboll seems the opposite, understated, quieter confidence, seems to want to lead through action first.

Was a little nervous when looking at how his offenses performed outside of Josh Allen but it looks like we might have a great leader in the building for the first time since TC.

Also super happy with Wink. The Titans aren’t some offensive juggernaut but that Giants D is light on talent and played above it

I think we saw more to be excited about with Daboll than we ever did with Judge.

People were creaming themselves over practicing with wet footballs and cute press conferences with Judge.

I'm optimistic.

Daboll seems pretty self aware and experienced. I trust if he doesn't know something he'll ask the right people.

In my experience guys like him tend to succeed.
I'm excited about BD

and going for 2 just made it clearer that he has a modern approach. I never favored Judge and his silly tough guy act.

I got a little nervous after that video where Judge was breaking down a punt return like it was thermodynamics.

Football is complicated. The good coaches make the complicated stuff easy.

Judge seems like a guy who gets off making it complicated so he can be the smartest in the room.

He has balls. Big ones. No chance in hell JJ is going for it if it 20-19. He's taking the XP.
After Daniel Jones stared down Saquan
Ike#88 : 9/15/2022 6:55 pm : link
and then threw the ball in the wrong spot (not to the corner flag) to see Coach D go and let him have it was refreshing. Not just staring at the field or talking into his headset but taking charge of the player that needed to do better. Jones is the key to the season. Daboll at least is going to let the players know in real time to get their butts in gear. Very Parcells like.
So far Schoen and Daboll seem more genuine than

comments/videos we have seen from Wink and Kafka.

Hoping they all work out of course but early first year impressions.
High standards with this franchise

The great ones win championships. I was not in favor of the JS/BD team but I will support them and the team.

Most SB winning HC's will do so within the first five years it is going to happen.

Good luck to him.

To be honest - the end of the first half had me nervous. Not calling Timeouts when he could - them the clock expiring on the edge of field goal range

That being said - what a second half

I have much more confidence in the preparation and coaching being done. It feels like there's an actual plan and vision now being worked towards.

We're going to hit some rough patches, but I think we finally got the correct GM/HC pair and got them in together, so they're on the same page and we finally escaped the staggered mess we were in with the prior GM's and coaches.

During the first half of the game, I never would have believed I'd be looking forward to the home opener this much. I wasn't even sure I'd make it through the entire thing.

It took Cowher awhile with Pittsburgh. He might be an outlier of course. And I'm not counting coaches who are won titles after their first HC gig like BB, Dungy, Vermeil, Gruden, etc.

I went out to a bar @ half when we were down 13-0. Credit me for the comeback, Haha.

It's a interesting dynamic but it comes out true the vast majority of times. Yes Cowher is one. I think McCarthy was 6. Now some HC's did it with 2nd team. BB and Vermeil but still within 5. I actually think there are reasons for this.

Lol. Well, if we get off to a rough start on Sunday, you know what to do.
I like the cut of his jib!

The brass balls are impressive. I also like how he got into Jones for the dumb throw. These things get old if the wins don’t come. But for now, the Giants need someone to kick this franchise in the nuts.

Half time adjustments?! Just like real NFL coaches! So refreshing.

Another thing about Dabs, he put together what might be the best staff we’ve seen in a long time. Wink is a top ten D-co and Kafka may well be on his way to being a top ten O-co.

I was listening to the Big Blue Banter pods and Dan and Nick are what they’re seeing on the coaches film is really exciting and encouraging for Giants fans. It’s obviously only one game. But, yeah, so far so good!

LFG Big Blue!

LOS, it is wild to me that-factoring in the odds-AR might end up with just one Lombardi & that was when GB was a six seed. & yes, I know it is hard to win it all, but considering his career/talent...it is kinda wild. Then throw in the fact that the Packers-starting in '92-have had Favre & then AR & one 2 Lombardis? Feels underwhelming.

It's another one of the things like HC's that just works that way at least since 1990. Only TB, BR and our Eli have won a SB with their original team after the first contract.
Daboll seems very genuine...

and is a breath of fresh air after the endless hackneyed football expressions we got from Clown Judge.

He is starring at a very manageable schedule this first quarter of the season, so Daboll has a chance to get off to a great start. And that could help create a much-needed winning culture...

No Peyton with the Colts? He must have inked a second contract after being drafted in '97 prior to them winning it in '06.

I have no expectations for this season. Yeah, it'd be cool if we in the playoff running, but I'm under no illusions this team is actually good. I want competence & this team looking like they're building something.

Agree Brett. I am liking Daboll more and more every week. I'm still scarred over buying into Judge... and we are going to hit some bumps in the road for sure... but I think this guy is the goods. And I also really love Joe Schoen.

In real estate they say it's all about location, location, location.

Well, this year for NYG is all about schedule, schedule, schedule. There is a lot of opportunity there to be a winning team.

Now, this season could be a sugar high - like 1997 - and it's really not what we are. But then it's up to Schoen & Daboll to make sure they read the circumstances correctly and adjust accordingly.

For sure. Rodgers is an amazing QB and has as much talent as any QB I can think of... but I feel like he is too... I don't know... primadonna? maybe? That personality holds him and his team back IMO. I truly believe that.
An area where I’m impressed in Daboll is his staff
Sean : 9/15/2022 8:28 pm : link
The last three coaches all had much weaker staffs. McAdoo was a weird dynamic because so many Coughlin coaches were inherited. Shurmur’s staff was very uninspiring. Judge filled his staff with college coach buddies of his. Daboll brought in strong coaches regardless if they had prior ties to him.

Cowher would've been fired by most franchises before he ever won a SB. He didn't win it until his 14th season and he had 3 losing seasons within the 7 seasons before the SB.

He was fortunate to work for the patient Steelers. Not to mention the refs helped him beat the Seahawks in the SB.

I personally don't think Rodgers personality is the problem. I think the packers front office hasn't done a great job putting together a great team. They rarely spend in FA. Not that FA is the answer to all, but sometimes it's the best way to add one or two missing pieces. Instead they sent Rodgers favorite target packing and replace him with question marks.

And they traded up and drafted a QB a few yrs ago in the first rd instead of adding talent to put them over the top.

I also think playing in GB in January isn't an advantage for a lot of their players, including Favre and Rodgers. Neither of them looked comfortable freezing their asses off.
Lots of Good posts on here

He just "Acts" like a coach should act.

There’s a lot that makes a really good HC
Game-plan, adjustments, building a winning culture, ability to get the best from his players and staff….

I don’t see any weaknesses in his skill set to be a great HC.
And yes, he’s easy to like as a person
Yeah, and you all loved the last guy too

I’m curious who you wanted to hire. You’ve been right on McAdoo, Shurmur & Judge. Is there a coach you preferred in the past hiring cycle?
