though our WR corps needs some new juice, we have a better overall group than the Browns (Cooper didn't co much, Schwartz, Peoples-Jones Etc were pretty quiet) and Jones is a far better QB than Brisset. Our offense needs to be varied and we need to attack the Panthers with a quick passing game as they try and stop Barkley.
If Toney is active, he needs to be used early and often just to get the Panthers attention.
This will be the first time we have scored 30 points or more in a long time.

You could be right. I'm leaning towards running the ball early and often because the Browns ran all over the Panthers, and I would still like Evan Neal to get acclimated to the speed of the NFL. I just like how we pounded the Titans in the 2nd half (and that's a damn good defense).
Agree on Barkley, I too was very pleasantly surprised
and his more direct approach and it paid off. He's a big back. I loved on that screen where instead of backpedaling or worse hurdling the defender he put his hat right in his chest. Walter Payton is the ideal, not Barry Sanders.
I had this game penciled in as a loss. Eric's write up sees a loss too, and there are issues on the Giants that are difficult to work around. But I do like the way they fought back last week, and I think the Giants coaching is vastly superior to the Panthers -- the wild card for me is Baker Mayfield.
If the Giants can make him uncomfortable then then might be able to squeeze this one out -- we're going to learn a little bit more about Wink's ability in this game.

I think they can still win, but it's going to be tough down a starting CB and BOTH edge rushers (basically our pass rush). How many good teams can afford to lose their two best pass rushers and a starting CB and not be impacted?

Not convincing. I don’t rate the Giants receiving corps as better than Browns. Maybe on paper but Golladay is pretty useless right now. Brissett has won a lot more than Jones. Giants offense all depends on use of Barkley, as it should. CMC is the only real challenge for the defense, as long as Mayfield does not get on a roll with his WRs.

One thing to remember though, Robinson got beat deep a lot and if he was healthy hed be going against Anderson who likes to go deep..

Jonrs will need to hit on those play action plays, if he can Barkley should have a field day because LBs will br held jist a little bit

What??? Jacoby Brisset 15-23 , Daniel Jones 13-25
How is that a LOT more wins? Brisset has played for the Patriots, Colts, Dolphins and Browns and for a lot longer than Jones (2016).
the spread between pass plays and running plays is impacted by the sacks, rpos, scrambles on called passes, and the 2 or 3 swing passes that traveled backwards and counted as runs not passes.
barkley and breida had 24 runs out of 58 plays, with at least 1 of Barkley's being a backward swing pass, so add in a few designed qb/wr runs and im pretty sure they called slightly above 50% passing plays though not the 60/40 splits buf/kc usually run.
1 other factor was that per next gen stats Barkley only saw 8+ in the box on 5.5% of his runs, which is pretty low. By contrast Henry saw 8+ on 38% (and McCaffrey saw 30%).
To your point about this week I expect that number to swing in a big way and put the game more on Jones. And honestly i think in the spirit of a "let's see what we have year" they should embrace it if that's what car does. Come out firing just like the Washington game last year and see if Jones can handle it. And if for some reason Carolina sits back that would seem like an easy adjustment to check things down to Barkley whether it's switching to runs or short passes at the line.
Eric, excellent review and summation of Carolina game
I'll be extremely excited if the Giants somehow come out with a win this Sunday but I'm doubtful. This is the sort of game that could cause the Giants rollercoaster to careen out of control.
Your final sentence goes like this: "The Giants also need Golladay and Toney to earn their paychecks." That is why IMO the Giants rollercoaster will crash this weekend.
This is the classic 1 PM home game where in the past, sun will be beating down and fans will basically be out of the game by the 2nd quarter. Hopefully that we are 1-0 and have some optimism it will be a crazy crowd

Golladay caught his 2 targets and seems like he can at least be that chain moving type sort of like late stage toomer.
James and Shepard both looked pretty good with Robinson out I think that's a roster spot for Slayton to come back in. Toney who knows. Same with Sills but they did have him in a route on the goaline TD pass to Myrick.
review. The secondary might have been able to compensate for the lack of a pass rush with KT and AO being out, but doing so obviously is more difficult with AR also out. I agree we should play extra DBs for that reason, and use them as blitzers as you noted. We may also need a DB to spy CMac. He could be very dangerous out of the backfield.
On offense, I would start by using Barkley as a decoy for the first series or two, or maybe line him up as a slot receiver to compensate for the loss of Robinson and likely Toney as well. That will help our depleted WR core and get Barkley into space. I would also try to throw to Bellinger and take a deep shot to Slayton to open up the field.
ST will hopefully be a lot better as well.
We can win this game, but will need to play basically error free given our overall lack of talent and injuries at DE and CB.

I'll be pretty surprised if we are not playing three safeties most of the game.
Our two best pass rushers out along with Robinson. McCaffery against the the Giants linebackers could get ugly. Panthers receiving corps are deadly too.
Can Saquon save the day again? Need another monster game from him. Interesting game for the new coach. Would love to see him outmaneuver Rhule and make him look bad.
Panthers have historically rained on the Giants parade in the Meadowlands. I still have visions of the 23-0 shut-out that they put on us in '06 wildcard game (against the maybe worse tandem of LBs the Giants ever put on the field). Then there was perennial back-up QB Matt Moore going up and down the field on us in '09 and putting up 40+ points.
against Saquon. But let's make them prove they can stop the run. I'd guess Slayton will be active which brings some speed outside and if Toney is a go, there may be some business in the pass game as well. Will be interesting to see how Daboll, Wink, Kafka approach this game.
Fake Barkley into the line and hit Slayton (WR?) deep or Shep crossing behind the LB. That would set the tone -don’t screw with our run game or we’ll make you pay…
Second play would be a swing pass to Barkley leaving the run for 3 rd down or second series after the first down got picked up.. then settle into our run packages. The LBs will have their heads on a swivel and “possibly” hesitant to pack the line…
Thoughts?

Love your optimism!
Maybe James will have another nice game at WR!
It will be an interesting test, that’s certain......
Let’s see how they play with Home Field advantage too! I think we need to see some of those exotic blitzes from Wink that we keep hearing about! Mayfield can’t feel comfortable back there otherwise we’re in trouble!
I expect Carolina to do whatever possible to make sure
Saquon doesn't beat them or so others might have to step up. Fingers crossed.
Yep. And maybe that's the problem. Who can step up?
The ideal scenario is that it doesn’t matter how much Carolina tries to stop him and Saquon still destroys their will. The top running backs/rushing teams in the league face defenses committed to stop them and they are still able to go off
The intro really stuck with me
"The Giants did something they haven’t done in years: they were as physical or more physical than one of the NFL’s most physical teams."
Thats probably why I feel so good about this defense, doesn't need to break the bank to be good if they just play hard and physical
With SB,it only takes a little hole, and if he gets through it,bye bye Jose..Carolina are not the Titans up front..So I expect our O line to be decent Sunday..Wink the wizard will take care of Baker..We will win another nail biter..Then again,my fingers right now have no nails..Might have to bite something else..Pizza would be good..Have some in the freezer..
if Carolina gets penetration and traps Saquon behind the line -- they have to use misdirection -- that is the successful formula they have and it works

This is the type of game you would expect the “old” giants to lose with a major letdown. Will the new coaching staff start a new trend? I’m expecting a horrible letdown but will enjoy it when they actually look better. Time for the receivers to get in the mix.
By the fourth quarter I want to see each member of their line sitting on their butts. If the score is close and that line is done for the day we have a shot. Also I expect us to pass block better than last week. So DJ if he has more than .08 of a second may be able to do some damage if receivers can do their part. Baker is going to give us fits. He is more maneuverable than T was this last week.
Tough game. .
I think the defense will keep the team in games. They have enough talent for that. The offense at least for now needs to run the ball. With the questionable WR's (at least right now) and pass blocking issues (at least right now) if they can't run consistently I think we see a lot of the same problems we have for years.
Yes they played physical on both sides. The great destruction (2012-17) was about destroying it which was a staple of this franchise for decades. JPP and Linval were the last two added (2010). Can you think of anyone else? Once the old guard aged out it when all the problems surfaced.

I agree. Of the next 3 this one concerns me the most. Missing Azeez and Thibs and the 2nd corner and lack of our LB's ability to cover in space really plays into the strengths of Carolina's offense with McCaffrey, DJ Moore and Robbie Anderson. More so than the power running of Dallas or the Bears. I think to win tomorrow we'll need to win a game in the high 20's or 30's. Mayfield like Jones is prone to mistakes, I just don't think we'll have the pass rush or secondary to force them.
The Giants have been carved up by lesser qb's than Mayfield, I hope
in these coaches that if Carolina puts 8 in the box, that they will have a plan to defeat it, unlike the last number of coaching staffs. I also think this OL plays a physical brand of football and they will beat on Carolina’s front until some big plays pop. I would be surprised if they are not fully expecting it.
Another challenge.....playing at home. The Giants have not played better at home for several years.
Wink will impress me.....as stopping Carolina will be very different than how they stop the Titans.
I will do my best to be loud

Issue here really is can the Giants get heat on the QB without their edge rushers? Last week it was pretty bleak, but the Titans OL is much better.

agreed on Robinson..
I think Wink blitzes more trying to make Mayfield make quick decisions against man coverage..
I expect a lot more speed on the field this week with Belton healthy, i think we see a lot of 4 safety sets
