Do you think this is the end for the Patriots?

Sean : 9/16/2022 2:54 pm
I’m never one to count out Belichick, but I think things are bad in NE. Everything we have criticized the Giants for (specifically Mara) is what Belichick is now doing. We’ve all criticized Mara for his unwillingness to look outside the building up until this year, but this is what Belichick has become. There are many young offensive minds out there, but Belichick opted for Matt Patricia and Joe Judge to run the offense. He leaned on two guys he was familiar with as opposed to looking outside of the organization.

I could be very wrong, but I think the Pats are looking at a 6-11 type season and I don’t know how much longer Belichick is coaching in NE.

but you may well be on to something.

I heard a stat on NFLN yesterday that Tua is 0-4 against NE. These are not the Pats we are used to.
Dammit, 4-0

I always gave Belichck more of the credit or at least 50-50 equal parts credit between he and Brady, and I will always consider BB a brilliant defensive mind, but maybe the whole close to 500 record thing without Brady has some weight. his is a big year for them. If they fall flat where do the go from here...

I may eat a lot of crow on this, but I am not impressed with Mac Jones.

Quite frankly, I watch him play and he makes mistakes and decisions on the same level as our Jones. In fact, I think they are close to being the same type of player on many levels.

Last week, MJones gave away at least 10 points in that Miami game. The sack and fumble-six. And the poor INT in the redzone that cost the Pats at least an easy FG attempt.

If the Pats get a high pick for '23, I would seriously consider using a first rounder on a QB.

might not work in 2022 with a JAG QB. If you aren’t innovating, you are falling behind.

I wasn't that impressed with Jones even last year when just about everything went right for him. HE's ok. Deserves credit for playing well in year 1, but some people were going bananas over this guy or calling him the next Brady. Uh, Not quite. He had a nice year one but never really elevated things. We'll see how good he is as you can't run and hide for very long.

Listen a bit to the sports radio. They are pretty down on him as well. The Patricia/Judge thing is first and foremost. Most folks believe in Matt Jones so far. I think they are in trouble but Belichick will and should get some leeway. We’ll see.

Bellichick looks to have screwed up by not bringing in an offensive mind to help his 2nd year QB - Judge and Patricia are not qualified IMO.

still be in the WC discussion, I think. If I had to put money on it, I'd say they'd just miss. But I think they'll be at least 8-9 at worst, but 10-7 at best.

They are always well-prepared, can play defense, and run the ball. I think Jones will do well enough to keep things close against all but the elite teams.

That AFC is tough, though. All three WC teams may come out of the AFC West.

You do a side by side of DJ's rookie year and MJ's rookie year and they are pretty similar.

ascended to their Peter Principle positions on other teams and failed miserably. Why they weren't put in positions where they excelled - defense and special teams - is beyond me. Hire an actual offensive coordinator, Bill. Geez.

Must be the last name. Jones's just don't get it done at QB.

I wouldn't count out the Pats. But they will need to start looking for some real talent. You can't get by with a bunch of utility players when you don't have a Brady running the offense. You have to have stars peppered around the team to make up for the lack of Brady.

Belichick's record without Brady, 8 years and counting, is a .500 JAG coach. OTOH, Brady W/O Belichick won a Super Bowl after going to a 7-9 team.

Guess who was more responsible for that NE run?

"Innovating"? Like what? Having the qb do handstands while throwing the ball? Kick the ball to the receiver? Having the rb roll on the ground?

It may surprise fans to know that many of the "innovations" fans see today: wingback reverses and running plays, wingback passes, qb running plays, delay draws etc were features of Red Hickey's original shotgun offense from 60 years ago. If you think BB o doesn't know this stuff, I don't know what to tell you. And if for some ungodly reason he didn't, you don't think he could get ahold of a Gilbride, who is only about 30 miles away, on the phone? Please

If you look at the Pats, their offense is built to try and control the ball- they have several very good running backs, a bunch of sure handed receivers and a qb who is supposed to hit the short passes and manage the game. It didn't work on the road this past Sunday; that doesn't mean it won't work more often than not.

The Brady comparison are sportswriter stupid. Most of the players Brady played with are no longer in NE, there was no Josh Allen in that division for most of Tom's career (that division was like the Little Sisters of the Poor) and good ol' Tom picked his landing spot in Tampa-it's not like he signed with the Lions and led them to the playoffs like the Natural.

Joe Judge is an offense killer
Spiciest Memelord : 9/16/2022 3:56 pm : link
I don't recall the conversation around the Golladay signing, I'm sure bbi'ers with fantastic hindsight would love to lecture us on how they felt, but that Agohlar signing was definitely obviously ass.
The End? No.
David B. : 9/16/2022 4:13 pm : link
But not having Brady puts them back in the pack with everyone else. Instead of always being in the hunt because they have an elite QB (and a historically weak division), they're now just like everyone else who doesn't have an elite QB. Their fortunes will rise and fall like everyone else's. Plus, Buffalo is now the favorite in their division and will be as long as Allen remains as good as he is.

IMV they have a collection of players that work when your pair them with a couple of studs. But Jones isn't close to Brady, the TE's are several (being kind) notches below Gronk, and their WR's are as ordinary as it gets.

Poor drafting Belichick has caught up to him.
For a long time, Belichick had someone qualified in the GM position,
Ivan15 : 9/16/2022 4:19 pm : link
Even if his title wasn’t GM. Who is that person now?
I think it is more likely that he gives up the GM role and stays as HC that he gives up the HC job or gives up both jobs.

On the other hand, he is getting to the age to say screw it all.

That operation was based on Brady. Bellicheck was a nice compliment to Brady, but it was Brady. As others have said, his track record without Tom is fairly unimpressive. Alternatively, consider what Tom has done without Bill as an older qb.

He seems to be headed for the type of ending many great coaches before him ended their careers. It ends for everyone sooner or later, even for probably the greatest ever coach.

ColHowPepper : 9/16/2022 4:27 pm : link
I give him a ton of credit for stepping in as a rookie and maintaining poise and, for the most part, maturity and a good deal of awareness in the pocket as he managed the Pats' game plan with the then OC.

But it's always been clear that he didn't have a big arm and would have to make the most of quick release and accuracy in the short to medium passing game. He entered the big stage and it wasn't too big for him, as far as what he was asked to do. But he never struck me as more than a game manager.

Trusting Judge and Patricia to run your offense with a young QB is both bizarre and complete irresponsible. They will ruin him.

Also wasn't there a report that Kraft is starting to meddle and demand certain players play or something? That's never a good sign.

The end is near for Belichick I think.
last year they were 10-7
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 9/16/2022 4:39 pm : link
with the 2nd best defense in the league and the 6th best offense. They were 3rd in the league in point differential. They got bitchslapped by Buffalo in the playoffs, but that wasn't a surprise considering Buffalo was arguably the best team last year.

Their defense still looks really really good to me. I don't know about Top 5 again, but that's a strong unit that kept the Dolphins game from being a complete blowout.

The offense is clearly the big question mark. Judge/Patricia have been getting ripped by their fans. I really don't know what to think of their offense except that I can almost guarantee they won't finish 6th in scoring this year lol.

I don't think they'll be an abysmal 4 win team, I think they're going to defensively grind their way to at least 6 wins. Anything more than that depends on if their offense and especially passing game can figure it out.

has let Belichick the coach down. Their recent drafts have been dismal. Imagine the reaction around here if we released second and third-round draft picks without them ever playing a single snap for us -- well, that's happened in NE.

He could get away with it as long as he could pilot the defense and the offense was a well-oiled machine with vets like Brady, Gronk and Edelman. Now the talent has declined, and they have no more room for error (and even when they were winning Super Bowls they were often doing it by the skin of their teeth).

Their free-agent spending spree (and subsequent playoff appearance) last year gave me 2016 Giants vibes - a brief flash of success, but now the bill has come due. And instead of searching for fresh coaching blood, or at least coaches who might inject fresh ideas, he's re-hiring retreads and yes-men. A recipe for decline.
judge and Patricia are obviously not good offensive coaches

Christopher Harris who watches every snap of every NFL game for his podcast, and who is a Patriots fan, said this week that Mac Jones' arm looked to him like late stage Chad Pennington. If you're interested I can give you a link and a time for the section where he breaks down the Pats game.

I don't think it's the case where he has Mahomes/Herbert skill, or Burrow moxie and athleticism. I think he likely doesn't have Cousins's tools. But you know maybe he can defy the limits of his ability. It's possible. But I wouldn't want him on the Giants.

And not just over, but the Patriots and their pink hat/fair weather fans will be forced into an eternity of QB/coach/GM hell like other fans and they will return to the zero fan days of the early 90's. There may have been worse eras for Pats fans, but speaking from experience, if I ever went to games in that era ('89 - '92) I often had my own row.
