“I want their eyeballs,” Martz said of the 49ers. “I’ve never seen anything about this kid that was encouraging at all. He really has to plant himself to make a good throw. He’s not a quick decision guy. [Everything] about him being a mobile guy and making plays with his feet, he looked like a fullback stumbling around trying to run the ball to me. He’s not Lamar. I don’t know what he is. He’s not particularly good guy running with the football. “Based on what I saw today he missed two guys completely by themselves. I know it was in the rain but quarterbacks do that, you make those throws. I know this, he can only go up, he can only get better, because you can’t get any worse that what he did [Sunday]. I’ve never liked him, I still don’t like him, I’d like to know what he does so well. Because he’s not a great passer, doesn’t have great skills, takes him a long time to set himself and throw the football, misses easy throws and he’s not a particularly good runner. Other than that he’s a hell of a player.” |
Quote: |
“I’m just shocked at the Bears. They took this quarterback, they went up and spent a lot to get him, and he was less-than-remarkable would be the kindest thing you could say about it. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen such a bad performance by a quarterback in his opening performance of the season. He was just completely awful. “He really deflated the football team with his performance. When you get a quarterback that can’t do anything at all, and defensively you shut them out for a half, you kind of lose hope. Right now they’re a team without hope.” |
That being said, his criticism of Lance may be well deserved, but it appears that his comments on Fields appear to relate only to that one game.
If the Lance busts, that trade-up is a full on fiasco.
Thanks for this post, Sean, really interesting.
But everything else in the quote was directed at Lance's play in that game, not at Fields, per follow up interview.
And you can see an edit cut after that first sentence.
Whether this is 100% true, no way to tell, but that's what Martz says.

I didn't watch the second half but didn't Fields get them a handful of points in 3rd and 4qtr to pull that one out? Did he play that awful in the rain?

The question is which QB he was talking about. Except for that one sentence about the Bears' drafting Fields, you can't be sure from Martz's comments alone.
The interview should be presented with both the spoken question and the spoken response following.
Fields is in the complete opposite environment. That is THE worst offensive cast in the NFL.
So, is Martz senile? Did he see the Bears-9ers game last week in the monsoon? And the two clutch TD throws Fields made in the second half...?

Yes, he did see them and in his follow up interview, which I linked, he said Fields played pretty well.
He said all of his critical comments about game play were directed at Lance, not at Fields
It's not like Martz is shy about telling us what he thinks.
Young QB’s who have “it”, elevate those around them.
Ohio State QB's deserve triple the scouting effort imv. Fields also needs more time but it is setting up that he may have to make his mark elsewhere.
QB play is mostly cerebral. Decision making, handling pressure, play big when it matters, etc. Too many get caught up in tools and regular season stats. Its a really hard position.
The Niners have a Super Bowl ready roster.
Big game versus a mediocre Seattle defense.

Welcome to SF.

You really need to study that Bears roster because it is abysmal. I think the worst in the NFL. And while I agree Burrow had significant OL issues, at least he's been blessed to have a terrific cast of playmakers. Maybe the best in the NFL.
Meanwhile, Fields has a putrid OL and a putrid set of "playmakers".
Lance has ZERO excuses. Zero.
Bears trade landed us Toney, Neal, the capital to trade up for Aaron Robinson, and Daniel Bellinger

If I’m going to take the no excuses approach for Jones, I’ll do the same about Lance & Fields. I’m not interested in hearing about supporting casts. Joe Burrow inherited a 2-14 team and maybe the worst OL in football and was in the Super Bowl within two seasons.

They have 2 nice RB’s in Montgomery and Herbert and WR Mooney is underrated

Lance is just getting a chance to be the #1. So it's still early for him. They're not comparable, yet. But Lance has to start showing something soon. That's the reality of the NFL. The 49ers are a win now team. They won't, and shouldn't, wait 3 years, as the Giants have.

On the bright side, at least we didn’t trade up for jones

How comforting - "nice" and "underrated"... ;)

Mooney would be our WR1 and it is not even close. Chicago does have some pieces, but not enough and not in the right places on offense. Even with that I still don’t think Fields has what it takes to be a playoff QB, but don’t blame it solely on lack of talent around him.

Let me ask you this. Who in the NFL has a worse collection of skilled players than the Bears?
My initial reaction to Lance in the little I saw was that he’s more talented than I initially thought. A lot of rough around the edges there but I want to see him in good weather conditions before actually judging him.

Giants, Falcons, Texans, Jaguars, Patriots, Jets. That is in no particular order (after the Giants I went down the list in alphabetical order).

I think Fields needs to show something this year - at least average QB play - but I think Lance is closer to Josh Allen where you need to see progress, big moments, etc. and not objectively good QB play. Lance was drafted as a project so I think he deserves more time. Fields was a two year starter at a big program. If he sucks this year, he probably just sucks.

I might give you the Texans and Jets, but those could easily be a three-way dead heat with the Bears. But every other team has better overall talent than the Bears - IMV.
Whatever the case, because we are into subjective land, the Bears are right at the bottom of the league.

Nothing personal, but I think the "no excuses" thing is silly. Did Aaron Rodgers elevate those around him last week or did he suddenly become a crappy QB? Or is he playing with less talent around him than last yr? I know it's just week 1, but will you be shocked if Rodgers and packers have a down yr?
There's a reason Tom Brady chose to go to TB instead of some other warm weather teams.
Did Matthew Stafford elevate the Lions? No. He won a SB when he was traded to a much better team.
It's a team game. If a QB has a crappy OL and bad receivers, it's just a fact, not illegitimate excuses.

Bullshit. Other than Saquon, I'd take every skill player they have over our group. Just bc guys aren't household names or you don't know them doesn't mean they suck. There's a lot of offensive talent in Chicago. Mooney, Kmet, Equanimeous St. Brown, Pringle, Pettis, Montgomery and Herbert is a decent NFL group of skill players.
I'd take that group over us, New England, Tennessee, Houston, Jacksonville, Cleveland, and probably Detroit and Seattle.

By cast in that comment I made, I was including the Bears OL.
And I know their personnel as well as anyone on this board. Do they have potential? Sure. When it actually translates into production, let's talk.
He may be right about Lance, but I don't think there's a single thing one can take away from a game played in that mess last Sunday.
Fields has all the tools to be a big-time player. He has great arm talent, instincts, and running ability. He's still a little raw and this Sunday he'll make his 12th NFL start.
12! We're not talking about 3+ years to develop, but shit, he ought to get more than 11 starts, including the most recent one played in a monsoon, before some jackhole like Martz throws dirt on his career.
I believe in the talent there, and certainly there are guys that have talent that never took the step forward, but I'd bet on Fields' talent winning the day in the end.

You may know the names but you don't know their talent. There are some bright spots on that line, too. But overall they're better than what you're giving them credit for, and I'll bet the proof will be in the final numbers at the end of the year.

Whatever you say. I am a big Feilds fan, so I hope it works out.
But there is nothing to date to suggest that the Bears are anything on offense other than one of the worst units in the NFL.

Martz is very douchey looking and acting.
Maybe BW has some arrogance but unless I've confused you with someone else, you used to say that anyone who was critical of Will Hernandez didn't understand football.
