Games like this can impact a whole season

ryanmkeane : 9/18/2022 9:02 pm
Yeah, we didn’t play that great today. Jones really hasn’t looked all that good and still looks shaky. We may not have a ton of options at WR and the offense might be ugly for good stretches throughout the year.

But let’s go back in time to 2020. The Giants finished 6-10 when 7-9 would have won the division and they would have made the playoffs that year, albeit a fairly bad team. During that season, weeks 5 and 7, the following happened:

34-37 loss at Dallas. Multiple chances to win that game. Sloppy penalties and horrible defense and time management lost the game.

21-22 loss at Philly. The Engram “drop.” The game management in the second half was basically “we don’t want to win this game so take it Philly.”

Now, the old saying is hey a loss is a loss. But if they had just won 1 of those 2 games, they win the division that year. Yeah they probably get killed in the opening round, maybe Judge gets fired in the end. Who knows. But there are a games during the year that are going to be extremely tight and a few plays here and there can decide it. 2021, who knows what happens if the Giants beat Washington in week 2 and Atlanta in week 3, two games that were absurdly winnable, and the Giants wanted to do basically anything but win it.

I think the one thing that Daboll understands over our past regimes is that when you have chances to win games in a long season where a few plays here or there could be the difference, you gotta take your fucking shot. Just like he did with the Jones rollout play today and the fact that they stayed aggressive mostly all game even when Daboll knew that they were getting beat up front. Just like he did with the 2 point conversion last week.

We aren’t a very good team, but this team is so much more fun to watch because it actually seems like they want to fucking win the division. Let’s enjoy it.

winning because the coaches are getting the most out of this group.

I have to chuckle a bit when I see posts like, "How come so-and-so isn't playing well?"

Because so-and-so isn't good or is very young.

This isn't a good team. Enjoy the wins and don't overreact to the negatives. A lot of players on this roster won't be here in 2023.
Most seasons come down to games like these.

The good teams win despite things going badly.

I wouldn't rank the Giants as a good team just yet, but this stuff helps form good habits. The team is 2-0 largely because of better coaching. They would be 0-2 under the last few coaches.

Exactly right. I’ve long said that coaches matter a lot more than GMs do.

Look what Martindale is doing with Julian Love and Oshane Ximines.

I have to laugh every time I hear Jason Garrett speak on television. Even tonight, he was saying that the Steelers have to get back to running the ball and controlling the clock and that’s how they are going to win football games.

….
ryanmkeane : 9/18/2022 9:10 pm : link
Daboll also isn’t playing around with any player who is a high draft pick or makes more money than X player. He’s going to play guys that are dependable. Richie James has been awesome for us this season. He gets open.
I'm just glad I can watch a show about the NFL

And I don't have to hear some sarcastic remarks about how the Giants ran two QB sneaks in a row from their own goal line, or some such snarky BS.

I think we all owe a debt of gratitude to Eric and his daughter (I believe) for the clown pictures, which I really think escorted us right out of the Judge era (wow did he fool me) and into this new era where we actually look like a professional football team.

Has NBC even covered the Giants wins the past two weeks?

ryanmkeane : 9/18/2022 9:13 pm : link
Eric, nope. I’ve watched the NBC pre show the past two weeks. They showed quick Giants highlights of each game and then no commentary.

Last week, they did a 10 minute segment on how Dallas needs to be able to get back to Elliott and running the ball.

Since I work from home most days, I watched pretty much every team's condensed games last week, and I plan on doing the same this week.

Hopefully we got the coach/GM right this time, and we won't need her art skills in the near future. But, she is the hero we need, not the hero we deserve, or something like that.

Because of the lack of red zone compared to the other crzy games, they were barely on Red Zone.
There were some wild games today
Jerry in_DC : 9/18/2022 9:23 pm : link
Giants game was close, but didn't have a fraction of the juice of some of these other games.

As for the point of the thread, maybe, maybe not. We have won close games against bad teams in the past few years. I thought this game was pretty darn similar to a lot of games we've played in the past 3-4 years. The main difference is that we've won 2 games early in the year. Previously, games like this would happen when we were 0-4.

I don't really agree with this. We haven't beaten the #1 team in a conference on their own field. Hell we haven't won an opener since 2016.

Granted the Panthers aren't good, but as you allude to, this is a game usually would have lost.

Remember, our seasons have been over by October 1st the past few years.

completely disagree. 2021, the Giants could have been 3-1. Instead, they lost to Washington and Atlanta. Those types of wins can change the outlook of a season. Doesn’t mean you’re automatically going to be a playoff team or anything like that. But they can change momentum.

We can go back every year really. Look at 2015, Coughlin’s final year. Giants had a pretty good offense that year. But, they lost the first two games of the year to Dallas and Atlanta by a combined 5 points. By the time they started to play well it was too late.
The timing of the game, yes
Jerry in_DC : 9/18/2022 9:46 pm : link
As you guys said, our seasons were pretty much dead in September for many years now. This year we are not eliminated yet and we can maintain some interest in the season.

My comment was more about the characteristics of the win. This game looked like pretty much every win we had in 2020 (and like a few of the losses).

Dead on.

Today the Giants didn't pass block very well; nor run block very well. But they found a way to win by keeping mistakes to a minimum, having a defense that played will a lot of energy and courage and smarts. And G.G. kicking FGs!

But this team is so much a work in progress, and right now it is operating without any playmakers at wide receiver. And a very shaky interior offensive line.

But 2-0 feels real good right now.

ps Watch the Brian Daboll press conference, as well as his locker room speech. He was practically broadcasting that this team has a very long way to go to get where it needs to be.

The Giants winning a home opener for the first time in 6 years doesn’t have national appeal. Compared to some of the other games today, this game was boring

I’m down because I said the Giants game didn’t have enough excitement and national appeal for a national pregame show? Not sure I can say it was awesome to finally see a giants win in person. You guys are weirdos.

The game had two touchdowns, I’m not going bitch and moan like you guys because NBC didn’t talk about us, who cares?

Last years season ended by Thursday of week 2. 10 days from opening kick off and the Giants had 2 losses already. That was the absolute bottom for this team. 10 f’ing days into the season. Not even two sundays!!! I have never been so down on the Giants in 42 years as I was last September. My give a F—-s we’re none existent after that Thursday night loss to the Redskins.

So glad Judge, Shurmur, and the hair are all in the past. I guess the second super bowl over the patriots was worth the trials and tribulations. But to put it in perspective since then last super bowl we have had one winning season. I met my wife, got married, had a kid, bought a house, sold that house, bought a new house, and my son just started preschool. That’s how long we’ve sucked.

How am I annoyed? I called this defense top 15 when the pass rushers come back, have called our staff elite multiple times, complimented Saqoun on taking what was given to him and not losing yards trying to make something out of nothing, and last but not least have said multiple times how great it was to see a win in person and how exciting it was.

Why am I getting attacked for giving an explanation about why the NBC pregame show might not have covered the Giants game as much as people would have liked? That means I’m down and annoyed the Giants won? Weird take, but not surprising.
The 2020 season

Let's be honest. If we want to use "what iffs" then we have to use "what ifffs" for other teams too.

It can't just be one way "what if?"

They were wiped out with injuries. Wiped out that year. I know Giant have been too but again let's be honest not all injuries are the same.

And the "what if" we won those early games. It's a weak point. You don't get any credit for a loss other than it's a loss. I know sometimes we want to look at the positive but the fact is sometimes I think many Giants fans forget what it's like to be very good.

Bad teams find ways to lose. That's how we lost. None of this stuff "we could've . . ." has an iota of meaning.

have finally learned how to close out games! This team, as constructed, reminds me of the early Parcells teams that had to slug it out and win close games with running the ball and Defense!
