Does anybody think that the offsides was a deliberate action by Carolina? It was 2nd and 4 and an easy 1st down which would have kept the clock running. Jumping offside made it 1st and 10 and much harder to get another 1st.
Personally I thought it was deliberate and a very good move on their part.
If we make 4 yards on the subsequent two plays, it burns their two timeouts, and ends the game. If they go offsides, we need 10 yards in the next 3 plays or they get the ball back.
That said, I don't think Matt Rhule intentionally has his DT do this.
With 2nd and 4, a much higher probability of getting the 1st down and burning 1 or 2 of your TOs in the process.
but you're putting all your eggs in the basket on 2nd and 4.
Why not start over at 1st and 10 and just sacrificing 5 yards?
Well you're not just sacrificing the yards. The real sacrifice is the guaranteed extra play the Giants get. Your best case scenario goes from 2 stops and a punt to 3 stops and a punt. You improve the odds of getting that best case, and I'm not saying it doesn't make sense or that it wasn't intentional, but the cost isn't measured in yards.

And the real key is the six yard run came preceded the 2 min warning - still leaving Carolina 3 TOs.
You only intentionally jump offsides because you have those three TOs to get the reset.
It also comes down to what you think is a high percentage of a team converting. Had it been 2nd and 5 do you jump? I think not.....even 2nd and 4 can be debated but get to 2nd and 3 in that instance - with three TOs in your pocket you intentionally take the penalty. Certainly 2nd and 2 or 1 yard to go.
This is now common practice in the NFL.
This is like deciding whether to kick a punt out of bounds. Really just a strategy call.
Interesting thought
And yes, seemed very likely intentional on the Panthers part, and a smart play if it was
They don’t get the option to decline or accept the penalty for a neutral zone infraction.
