2022 vs. 2016: History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme.

Big Blue Blogger : 9/19/2022 11:23 am
I realize this is bit like the old cherry-picked "Lincoln/Kennedy" parallels, but still...

2016 Week 1:
The Giants go on the road and start slowly, but hang in thanks to a Sterling Shepard TD. In the fourth quarter, they take a one-point lead on a score by a former hero rebounding from a career-altering injury suffered two years earlier. A last-minute drive by the home team falls just short, and the Giants win by 1.

2016 Week 2: In a frustrating home opener against an NFC South visitor, the Giants' offense misses multiple opportunities to put the game out of reach. Defense and special teams pick up the slack, and the Giants win by 3 on a late field goal.

2016 Week 3: With a golden opportunity to forge an early lead in the NFC East, the Giants host the defending division champs, who appear vulnerable. New York takes a commanding lead, but the visitors steal a win with a few big plays, including a fake punt, two long TDs and a fluke interception on the Giants' final drive.

So you are saying, ‘watch out for the fake punt’

Lets just say I won't be overly comfortable with a 21-9 lead in the second quarter.

Su'a Cravens had one damn interception in his career. Tress Way has been in the League nine years, and has a total of 38 yards passing - 31 on that one f*cking play. The worst thing about that fake punt was that it wasn't a particular surprise. Washington was at midfield, down by 1. I was screaming "WATCH THE FAKE" at the TV. If the Giants had paid any attention to Dunbar, Way would have punted. Ahhh, the Tom Quinn era...
I believe it was in that Week 3 game versus WSH..

...that Eli took a really big hit late, bounced up......

But, he never really appeared the same that year until very late in the year as I remember.

And the offense certainly regressed.
what was the fluke INT?

Eli was picked I thought throwing a short over the middle route that was well covered.

After that big hit.
Schedule in 2022 is also very similar to 2016

They play the Packers Week 5 on the road (London this year)and the Ravens Week 6 at home this year just like they did in 2016. This team does have a similar feel to the 2016 team as we have a head coach in his first season and they are finding a way to win close games despite being very flawed offensively.
I would sign up for a 2016-type of year

as long as the following season doesn't look like 2017.
Key sequence Week 3 2016

NYG 1st & 10 at WSH 29

(14:18 - 4th) (No Huddle, Shotgun) E.Manning pass short left to O.Beckham to WAS 5 for 24 yards (M.Foster). PENALTY on NYG-W.Richburg, Disqualification, 15 yards, enforced between downs. W.Richburg, ejected for 2nd UC penalty.

OBJ got the Giants to the WSH 5 yard line at the beginning of the 4Q with two consecutive fantastic plays: first a one-handed catch, and then a YAC thrill ride where he stiff-armed Josh Norman and weaved through the WSH secondary.

Richburg blew it by idiotically taunting Norman for the second time in the game.

Giants got backed up to the 20, Eli threw an INT, Giants got zero points.

This was the game where OBJ attacked the kicking net in frustration after the game outcome was decided (when Eli threw his second INT of the quarter).

OBJ caught enormous crap for that and everybody forgot about Richburg (and Eli).

If a time machine could bring 2016 Beckham back to the 2022 Giants, I could absolutely see 11 wins with this schedule.

You're right, Bill. I just called it a "fluke" in the sense that it was the only INT of Cravens's career, and it came on a dump-off to Vereen that should have been the safest possible pass.
