Our defense has done a good job these first two weeks. I've actually been pleasantly surprised with both our EDGE group and our DBs, both seem to be deeper than I assumed pre-season.
Pre-draft the rumor was that the Giants wanted Sauce Gardner because Wink (pretty openly) has said he values DB talent more than Edge talent for his scheme. However we ended up with Kayvon which wasn't the worst backup plan.
Now who knows how good Kayvon and Sauce end up becoming, I really like both of them. But my question isn't really about those two specific players.
My question is just what type of piece do you think the defense we saw in the 1st two weeks could use more... an elite CB or elite EDGE?
**For the purposes of this question, assume Kayvon isn't on the roster, otherwise we'd all pick CB**
McCaffery had a 49-yard run. His other 14 runs picked up 53 yards.

That 49 yard run also came after LW left the game IIRC.
Both ultimately would be needed. But get the ER, 1st.
I think when you get to the playoffs the rushers are more important. Gifted QB's with the OL and skill group is just too hard to continuously keep down.
Having said that, who doesn’t love a sack machine.
I mean, it's a fact that Wink made the statement below. Unless you think he's completely lying (possible, I guess), I'm not sure what your point is.
“I want as many cover corners as you can have, ‘cause the game is the passing game now ... Talking philosophically now, this is my opinion on it. I think sacks is one of the most superficial rankings there is ... when you look at sacks, there’s a lot of things that go into that ... my philosophy is - personally - I’d rather have a corner that could cover, then I guy that could rush. I’ll get guys to hit quarterbacks; that’s our job as a staff.”
An ILB with speed also would be nice. Make that two ILB's with speed
But all considered, an Elite QB will beat an elite corner if he has time in the pocket. Even the best corners can only cover for so long.
So, to answer your question....an elite edge rusher is most desirable.
I think "may have" is a very important part of that statement. I keep hearing how the Giants are missing their "best pass rushers in Ojulari and Thibodeaux". Ill give you Ojulari. But Thibodeaux? Seriously, what have we seen him do so far? Get hurt in a preseason game? Before he was hurt, did he blow anyone's minds with his crazy talent? I didnt see him do a thing. I know he talks a good game, but thats all I know. My point is that we HOPE we have an elite pass rusher, but we dont know at this point. 1st round pass rushers have been known to fail before.
But yeah, CB, EDGE, WR, LT, oh and of course QB get elevated above the rest in a tie.
I don't know, it reminds me too much of Graham's pass rush by committee approach the last couple years and the fact the Giants' rushers don't consistently win one-on-one.

Nearly 4 yards a clip (3.8) even after removing his longest run? Seems like you're endorsing the MLB suggestion.
We should remember though that we're building a team for the long term, not necessarily for Wink. Banking on high profile coordinators to be around long term is a bit of a risk.
vs
elite offensive player
garrett wilson or drake london would look damn good in blue right now.
im excited to see Thibs but that's going to be a high bar to clear given what Wink's been able to pull off so far with some minimum salary backups/journeyman.
and a guard or two
and a middle linebacker
and another safety
and about 2 or 3 wide receivers
and a center
We're not that good at drafting defensive backs, as Apple and Baker will tell you.

But they have played very poor offensive passing teams.
The pass rush and the CB's are still a huge unknown at this point.

that's true but even micah parsons can only do so much to slow down a great offense. meanwhile watch a few of those plays waddle made yesterday against a loaded ravens defense.

Parsons/Chase on the same field was a “no contest” win for Parsons though.
I am so scared of this kid. I got him so wrong.
I knew he was speed based but I didn’t know how well he could translate that into power off the edge. He wasn’t even considered an edge pre-draft, most of his disruptive plays in college were up the middle on a blitz almost solely on speed/quickness.
He’s special. Jones + Parsons = 3 potential game changing plays. Hold onto the ball Daniel.
I have TJ Watt in mind, and that's because he's right on the LoS. And when you are on the LoS, you can sack the QB, hit the QB, knock down passes (maybe even intercept one) and even disrupt the running game. That's a lot of impact to an offense.
