Darnay Holmes

pjcas18 : 9/19/2022 3:47 pm
What is the consensus on Darnay Holmes?

I am impressed with him.

I remember from draft day it seemed like the biggest commentary was around his size. He's not going to be confused with Darrelle Revis, but as a 4th round pick he represents exactly the value you hope to get from that round.

I was trying to find a better CB the Giants have drafted and i couldn't find one that was clearly better all the way back to Webster in 2005. Even 1st round picks like Apple, Prince, and Baker.

May be worth a second contract?

Really? because of the defensive holding calls? I thought those were smart.
meh. still too grabby with his hands and prone to

brain farts in coverage. I do think he has the ability to improve with better coaching we have now, hopefully he will.
On his best day a avg to good nickle

I Like him but as the 4th CB.
He is grabby, but
section125 : 9/19/2022 3:53 pm : link
does not need to be. This staff may work it out of him...he plays fast.
Scares me in big situations

Has a knack for getting penalized during crunch time. Both last year and even in Week 1. How many holding or illegal contact penalties does he have lifetime?
i see him the same way pj
Eric on Li : 9/19/2022 3:55 pm : link
we've seen a lot of undersized nickel cbs who had no shot (grant haley, etc) and he doesn't seem like one of them. in each of the first couple games he's made some physical hits and even though he's grabby, he's typically been in decent position.

i think he was the one who blitzed/blasted baker on a play where he some how still completed a pass but on reply it looked like a miracle it wasn't a sack/fumble.

Wink really likes him, but you must have missed the lynch Holmes threads last week.
I like the guy
John In CO : 9/19/2022 3:56 pm : link
He still gets too grabby for my tastes every now and then, and yes, he gets beat too....but who doesnt? We obviously tend to focus on the negatives more than the positives, but overall, ive been pretty happy with him.
He played a really good game this week
Thunderstruck27 : 9/19/2022 3:56 pm : link
Had a bs call against him at the end of the game but he also forced a fumble and was stingy on D
he's growing on me
UConn4523 : 9/19/2022 3:59 pm : link
we definitely need another CB but he's playing his ass off and seems to be taking to Wink's system. We need another premium investment in CB (FA or day 1/2 pick) but Holmes is someone I want to keep.

This. Every time the other team needs a completion in the fourth quarter they go at Holmes. The guy is either open or it's a penalty
I expect Wink and his staff to coach him up

Good player, but doesn't seem to trust himself
Mike from Ohio : 9/19/2022 4:08 pm : link
hence the grabbing when sometimes it seems he doesn't need to do it. I think he is certainly someone you keep around unless someone can push him down the depth chart and/or off the team. Right now we don't have that kind of depth.
he had a better game yesterday
dlauster : 9/19/2022 4:11 pm : link
than he did last week.

That's what you want. Play better every Sunday.
He’s a pro
JoeyBigBlue : 9/19/2022 4:14 pm : link
Hard worker and willing contributor. He sucks at man coverage though. I worry he’s going to get toasted by one these good slot receivers and lose us a game.
Holmes got away with at least three blatant PIs
NYDCBlue : 9/19/2022 4:14 pm : link
that were not called yesterday. One on a critical third and long that helped preserve the win. Thank God the refs did not see it, but Holmes practically pulled the receiver's shirt off! He was holding him for at least 20 yards down field! He basically grabbed him at the stem of the route and then never let go. And the receiver still almost came down with the catch.
He has great talent
Rudy5757 : 9/19/2022 4:15 pm : link
but he gets too many costly penalties. He leads the Giants with 3 penalties already. No question he has talent he just needs to clean up his technique.
he shit to bed last week...
BCD : 9/19/2022 4:16 pm : link
a little better sunday....jury still out with me though.
I love his mental approach to the game and to life in general...

A great presence in the locker room and a very easy guy to root for. One of my favorite Giants. I'm not surprised the coaches love him.
Got to fix the grabbing

.

They are not smart late in the game, when the other team is trying to drive for the winning score. He has done it in both games, not good. In the game last week, also allowed a pass down the sideline inside the numbers for about a
30 yard gain, that was a big play, then Bullock missed the field goal, I never liked him as a kicker by the way.
Holmes needs to be better late in games, seems to choke a bit to me.
The Giants
PaulN : 9/19/2022 4:54 pm : link
Secondary has performed brtter then any of us could have hoped. Flott really stepped up, and Williams was good before he went down. Holmes gas had hus oenalties, but he also is doing a better job then we could have expected.
Holy shit

It's not unfair criticism.

Doesn't mean I'm rooting for him to fail.

Don't know if you have any insight, but it seems that the prior regime would send guys to purgatory if they did things the coaches didn't like, instead of try to teach them. Maybe that's why he still has bad habits.
He drove the coaches nuts
JonC : 9/19/2022 5:05 pm : link
but he was still one of their better performers, despite not fixing his bad habits at all. There's still time, but instincts can be awfully tough to unlearn.

Man coverage isn't his strength. He is much better in zone. Grabby/holds at the top of the route.

Serviceable, but can certainly be upgraded in the offseason.

Henderson has been the DBs coach since 2020. He probably meant what Martindale is asking of him.
He was beaten by the rookie Kenny Phillips from
BSIMatt : 9/19/2022 6:37 pm : link
The Titans a few times, maybe that’s where the comments came from. One was on the great throw by Tannehill that got them into FG position to attempt to win the game.

I wasn’t as down on him after that, just impressed with the Phillips kid..he looks like a steal for the Titans, he impressed me the most of all their WRs and I know they are very high on him.

No gainsaying that, Jon, case in point with the same bad habit: Eli Apple, going on seven years and more of the same yesterday.
Love the kid

Loved the draft pick and think he’s a keeper. Very hard working, high achieving guy.

Vin, you're a good observer of the game, h/t to you. But I disagree a bit: I think he's so quick in short area game that coverage is a plus, but when combined with the grabbing, it's neutral to negative. He does lack top end speed, which is why he's not on the outside.
He's a keeper
JerseyCityJoe : 9/19/2022 7:33 pm : link
Holmes is an aggressive player. He will always be a bit grabby but he just needs to disguise that better. That will come.
