NFT: Judge vacates Adnan Syed's conviction

DanMetroMan : 9/19/2022 4:19 pm
(A follow-up from last week)

A judge in Baltimore overturned the murder conviction of Adnan Syed on Monday afternoon, a decision that could soon set Mr. Syed free after 23 years behind bars in a case that was chronicled in the first season of the podcast “Serial.”

Prosecutors have yet to decide if they will seek a new trial or drop the charges against Mr. Syed. They said that an investigation had pointed to two possible “alternative suspects,” although those individuals have not been named publicly or charged.

will be one of the suspects.
What do

you say to the parents?
Convicting the murderer can not bring her back and least get justice for her and her parents.

"We can't imagine what your life has been like for the past 20 years, but we think the wrong man is behind bars, and we're committed to justice."
they have DNA evidence getting tested and some of the results

are reportedly already in and inconclusive, so i doubt they retry him. it seems likely the dna may point towards someone else which is why they are letting him out now.

It's possible to agree that it sucks for all families involved and still let a man out of prison for serving time for a crime he didn't commit.
How they never looked closer to the suspect
montanagiant : 9/19/2022 5:26 pm : link
With the shovels in his car or the suspect whose relative lived right behind where they found her car
If he did do it and they
section125 : 9/19/2022 5:27 pm : link
are releasing him incorrectly, well he did 23 years. The bad part will be Baltimore/Maryland will need to give him compensation.

If he did not do it and is being released, his life was taken from him and he definitely deserves compensation..

FWIW
DanMetroMan : 9/19/2022 5:30 pm : link
the family apparently still thinks he's the guilty party.

what part of that isn't obvious (assuming the new evidence does point towards it being unlikely he did it)?

i cant imagine there's a person with a functioning brain that doesn't have the appropriate sympathy for their loss and desire to see justice -- but these quotes from their lawyer are bizarre, specifically the bold.

Quote:
Attorney Steve Kelly says the family of murder victim Hae Min Lee felt betrayed by the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office’s decision to spring Syed — who spent some two decades in prison for allegedly strangling the teen before a podcast highlighted problems with his case.

“Whether or not Adnan is guilty is beside the point,” Kelly said in an interview on CNN.

“This is what they have been told for decades upon decades. And the issue is nobody wants to find out who killed Hae more than her brother and her mom. What happened yesterday … they were completely excluded from the process. This is a preordained agreement between the state’s attorney, the defense, even the court.”

i would think whether or not there was a way to appropriately include them in the process very much depends on the ongoing investigation and their lawyer doesn't appear to be showing the type of judgement you'd expect of someone looking to get privileged info.
