every time you see jihad ward make a stop, or oshane ximines get a pressure, or richie james make a nice catch, or daniel jones look like a functional qb, remember this - evan engram, austin johnson, lorenzo carter, and keion crossen combined to get 23m+ AAV in UFA last march to net the nyg 2 extra day 3 picks next year. or another way of thinking about it 2 more dj davidsons, micah mcfaddens, darian beavers.
if they can find a way to get some production out of slayton or if they choose to not bring back love/barkley you can add them to the mix also. scan through the history of comp picks at the OTC link below and you will see lots of 3rd/4th/5th round picks returned from mediocre players getting over paid in UFA.
the best orgs routinely do exactly this and create extra draft capital for themselves out of thin air. specifically the rams and ravens. they are also smart in how they do it relative to UFA to shop for FA's (or veteran salary dump trades) who won't count against the formula. for example 2 years ago adoree jackson didn't factor into the comp pick formula because the titans cut him but golladay did - and he cost us a 4th round comp pick that dalvin tomlinson would have qualified for and been an extra selection for schoen + co in between Dane belton and Micah McFadden. this past year schoen essentially gave up a 5th round pick engram would have returned to sign glowinski and a 6th for tyrod, who are both fine additions but there may have been alternatives like feliciano who got cut so was signed with impacting any draft picks. or they could have just targeted young players they liked on someone else's roster and given up draft picks (sort of like the chauncey gardner johnson trade).
as restricted as schoen was this past FA cycle history tells us that even when not restricted spending freely in UFA is a risky proposition and there's much better ROI in the mid levels (or trades) - if you have a coaching staff that knows how to identify and get the most out of players. it's also a good reason to put cap space into extending your own players early as reasonably as possible vs. shopping for another team's.

It's a bit of a shocker for us Giants fans to see a Davidson (he had some nice snaps yesterday), Beavers, and McFadden contribute so early and significantly as late Day 3 picks, unlike years past. And given Glowinski and Belton added to those names, ratio of ++s to negatives is very, very good. Coaching + FO acumen
Good post, Eric!
(:
was your site the old TTB(?) cap table? or was that someone else?
agreed on davidson, in limited snaps he's been really impressive and when we was drafted he was a guy i thought seemed pretty off the board. very refreshing to see a coaching staff that knows how to identify and utilize players who fit what they want to do. the ravens more than anyone else have a knack for that and it's one of the reasons it always seems like a good idea to get people from their organization on/off the field.
Sorry. I see now that was 3rd day picks. I need to read the link thoroughly.
they don't get awarded until right before the draft but otc projects them in real time during free agency pretty accurately.
to be clear i don't expect any sort of crazy windfall. id probably bet on 1 of jones/barkley getting tagged and love extended. all 3 are captains so it's hard to envision them deciding to replace them via UFA (the draft is another story but somewhat unrelated just bc of timing since they won't know who they get in the draft until a month after FA).
but i wouldn't be surprised if the net of ximines, james, ward, and a few others move on and get the nyg a few extra day 3 picks just as happened this past FA cycle.
Paulie, I did too.
the pats are kind of inconsistent. 2 years ago they spent like crazy and canceled out a 3rd for Thuney on mostly mediocre talents, this past year they spent nothing so they are getting 3 day 3's.
Belichek is a master at accumulating draft picks but he hasn't made as many good picks as you'd expect.
It does help to have such a dearth of talent that almost any new addition is an upgrade....

If I go back to running my cap blob/website, I want you on it. This is critically important stuff.

Not mine.
