NFT: Jeopardy

If anyone watched Jeopardy tonight, I am amazed at the bonehead bets these obviously smart people sometimes make. One last week and one tonight.
Happens all the time

Dumbest smart people in the world. And you're not even talking about the people betting just enough to win by a dollar and leaving $10,000 on the table.
Bewildering

Most of these contestants wager poorly. Seen so many 2nd and third place contestants throw a win away.
Agreed

I don't think some contestants take it into consideration
These people have strong memories.

Most don’t have coinciding math skills.
For those who did not see it tonight

the guy in the lead hit a daily double on the last clue in double jeopardy. What you need to do during the game is to go into final jeopardy in the lead so you control your own destiny and don’t have to depend on another player getting the final jeopardy question wrong. This guy was less than $2000 ahead of both other players. So instead of minimizing his bet to assure he stay ahead, he wagers $2000. He then answers wrong and goes into Final Jeopardy in third place.

However, he in the end is saved by being the only one to get Final Jeopardy right. Sometimes fate does not punish you for a dumb decision.
That’s why Holtzhower was so good

He had a gambler mentality

Most of these people don’t get the math part of this

And that woman who had the lead tonight made a dumb bet in final jeopardy, go big or go home.

Yeah I was so focused on the guy that I did not notice she made the incredible mistake of being in the lead but not betting enough to assure a win if she got it right. The woman last week lost because of that.
what always gets me is how many people bet small trying to

come in 2nd or 3rd as if they keep the $$ they have accumulated. Whether they have $100 or $10,000, 2nd and 3rd place get $2000 and $1000 respectively.

And game theory are very different cognitive skills. Few excel at both.
I don't think there's much game theory

in the two incidences Big Al described. It's really just simple math. The problem is that some people are really bad at simple math, especially in a high pressure instantaneous moment.

From what I've heard, there are two basic skills necessary: knowledge of facts, and a knack for the buzzer (some contestants have said this is the top skill). Make it three: ability to remain composed when the bright lights are on and the camera is rolling.

If you can't buzz, you can't get on the board.
All the time, amazing players can't get a word in edgewise bc they can't buzz. That's how we were punished with Miranda Roach for what felt like 4.5 years.
