Joe Schoebert worked out for the Giants yesterday

A 2 down thumper that bombed on his big Jags contract a couple of years ago

… in yesterday’s post about the Monday tryouts. Schobert was by far the biggest name. He has been slipping for three or four years, but was still good enough to start for Mike Tomlin in 2021. That’s more than anyone will say about Austin Calitro.
Full list and discussion of Monday hopefuls. - ( New Window )
I’d rather Jaylon Smith

Jo Scho is a Zone coverage LB with average athleticism, so he doesn’t fit this scheme. The things he does do well: blitz, pursuit, and tackle. He does better than anyone we have at LB. Can’t really call him a 2 down thumper if he can’t thump.
Until 2020, Schobert and Martinez were on similar trajectories.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/21/2022 7:33 am : link
Fourth-round picks in 2016. Both earned playing time as rookies, then put up nice numbers, tying for the League lead in tackles in 2017, with 144. In 2020, they both signed big contracts with terrible teams. Martinez thrived for a year, then tore his ACL. Schobert’s decline started earlier, and was more gradual. In 2022, they are back on common ground, except now it’s the street.

All the way back to his walk-on days at Wisconsin, Schobert was not quite big enough or fast enough, but somehow overcame his athletic deficiencies. His margin was always small though. Even without a devastating injury like Blake’s, he lost just enough to become a JAG, around the time he became a Jag.

Calling Schobert a "JAG" is a little strong. Even this version of Schobert would be our best ILB by leaps and bounds. He had 140 tackles,3 picks and 3 sacks the year before last. Last year he had 110+ tackles and a pick. Calitro and Crowder make Schobert look like Dick Butkus. I'd sign him and play him over those 2 without hesitation.

This after or prior the Smith signing to the Practice Squad?
I liked Schoebert a few years back when he was on Cleveland (?)

I think. He had a good season leading up to his free agency deal. I guess he hasn't kept that same level of play though...
Are any of these alternatives really better than Martinez?

I still don’t get it.

Agreed.

Maybe Blake isn't the same guy he was before he tore his ACL. And there were rumors of other (personality?) issues.
Martinez apparently wasn't a fit
JonC : 9/21/2022 9:14 am : link
and his role was reduced, leading him to want out. This appears to have been his choice, let's keep it clear.

Schoebert is unlikely to be much of a solution either. Legit fixes to this roster aren't coming in off their couches, dudes.
The_Taxman89: I would caution against judging ILBs on stats.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/21/2022 9:22 am : link
Tae Crowder had 130 tackles and two INTs last year. An inside linebacker can put up numbers and still be a weak link.

Schobert may be better than Crowder. He is probably better than Calitro. But if he were more than JAG, he might have lasted more than a week and one horrible preseason performance with Denver.

That said, even a JAG can be an upgrade. Chase Blackburn is a good example.

Thanks for the info, JonC. Re. fixes coming off their couches, once in a while it happens, at least short term, right? If not mistaken, Chase Blackburn was "on his couch" until he was signed at the end of Nov. in 2011. He ended up contributing and went on to play another 3 seasons (NYG and Car).

I'm an optimist, so WT heck. Let's go Schoebert (and/or Smith)!
Crowder
Samiam : 9/21/2022 9:40 am : link
I’m guessing that Wink thinks that Crowder has an upside and that some of these vets are on the downside. Wink seems to have been right about Ximines when most of us wanted him release. Maybe the same holds for Crowder.

I too am hopeful that Wink and Kafka/Dabes continue to help other guys excel where they formerly did not.
This is truly a season for patience.
There are exceptions, Blackburn was one
JonC : 9/21/2022 9:52 am : link
but they are few and far between.
I liked Jaylon Smith when here
5BowlsSoon : 9/21/2022 9:53 am : link
I don’t recall, is he a ILB? Do you guys think he fits what Wink wants in a LB?

I don't know shit, but it's seems to me the fact the Giants just signed him (to PS), indicates that Wink thinks he can help.
Traits - Lets see What Wink Likes
DavidinBMNY : 9/21/2022 10:22 am : link
It appears Wink wants LB's with speed who can shoot the gap. He wants players who attack. I'd be interested to see the continued development of the group. McFadden, a less heralded prospect was drafted before Beavers. While Beavers is the bigger name, McFadden was ahead of him anyway. It seems to suggest that most times Wink's going to want a fast attacking LB but in some match ups he'll need more a thumper.

And in a game with a CMAC type - speed is the name of the game. 2 very interesting first 2 games. 1 Heavy D to stop power , and 1 speed D to stop speed.

Dallas maybe is a bit more balanced. I'll be interested so see if the ILB snap count is so low again on MNF.
I suspect the fundamental element being looked for is team speed
Bob in Newburgh : 9/21/2022 10:31 am : link
Our true LBs probably average well below the League average. Crowder might be considered fast for an inside LB, but he nullifies that somewhat by not being instinctive.

Schobert would be finger in dike role only.

I do remember he was an ILB target that used to be discussed here
Seems like he has similar trajectory to Blake M. Without the injury ( I think)
