Fun look back thread - Matt Rhule hired by Carolina

Sean : 9/21/2022 10:01 am
I thought this would be fun to look back on. I was so disgusted that morning when Rhule was going to the Panthers. He’s now 2-14 in his last 16 games and most Panther fans want him fired (even calling for Ben McAdoo to be interim head coach).

cosmicj deserves a callout:

I think we dodged a bullet here.

Fun looking back on coming off a win against the Panthers.
Link - ( New Window )
ha ha! I was pissed the Giants weren't as aggressive as
mikeinbloomfield : 9/21/2022 10:10 am : link
the Panthers. Oh well, we appear to have dodged a bullet. Love that speculation was Wink (who might have been good!) or Garrett. And then it turns out to be the Special Teams dude.
That was a fun read, thanks

The cherry on top would be the BBI thread where Judge was hired.
I was one of those
5BowlsSoon : 9/21/2022 10:11 am : link
Who was hoping for Rhule over McCarthy….I don’t recall Judge entering the picture until much later. I was okay with Judge’s resume when learned it and I liked his first NY Giant speech. Everything after that, no good
perfect example...

...of people want what they don't have.

We've been suffering for sure but maybe, just maybe, we have the right organizational pieces in place.
Love the Gettleman stuff

LMAO!
This thread got me thinking
nygiants16 : 9/21/2022 10:19 am : link
and watching this team the first 2 weeks and yeah its not the most talented team in the league but i really think Gettlemans biggedt downfall was who he hired and that is partially on Mara but top guys didnt want to work woth Gettleman either..

and yeah he made some bonehead signings IE Golladay but there is young talent on this team from gettleman..

I just think his attitude and cockiness did him in when it came to hiring coaches
I really didnt care we lost Rhule
cjac : 9/21/2022 10:20 am : link
because I thought Judge was a really good hire

This is why i have no opinion of Daboll yet. I'm just going to root for the team and wait and see.
Rhule
Eric from BBI : Admin : 9/21/2022 10:21 am : link
seems over his head.

The sad thing is he is still better than Judge.
I wanted Rhule
Scooter185 : 9/21/2022 10:23 am : link
But was 100% okay with Judge (big whiff there)

My biggest worry that hiring cycle was ending up with McCarthy.

yep, I got way ahead of myself with Judge. I was very disappointed when it started falling apart. So, like you, I'll just watch the games and wait.
Rhule looked like a cant miss

Problem is, even a good coach can’t win with a bad QB in this league.
Rhule has a lot of Judge in him

True, but as Sy mentioned in his game review, Carolina has mismanaged the position terribly. Rhule deserves blame for that.

I think they're pretty comparable, at least on the field. I don't follow the Panthers, but Judge's postgame behavior really embarrassed the organization last year.

Yep - you're basically spinning your wheels and treading water.

The other issue is college guys get a taste of that and say f*ck this and sprint back to college where they have it made:

vg salary, recruiting, and treated as a king on campus.

I'm not even going to look
Biteymax22 : 9/21/2022 10:29 am : link
But I think I freaked out pretty good regarding the fact that Rhule was supposed to be the top choice and we couldn't even get him in the door for an interview...

In retrospect, we should have just nabbed Wink back then.
All in on Rhule
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/21/2022 10:47 am : link
Liked the TC connection and followed his teams a bit at both Temple and Baylor. Thought he address the OL and front 7 with the Giants.

He actually has assembled a good D unit. His problems stem from the O side.

I think he will rebound if he gets canned but it will be at the college level.

How doesn't he deserve blame for that? He has final say on all personnel decisions.

Same here
I don't think Wink or anybody else would have succeeded here.
an_idol_mind : 9/21/2022 10:53 am : link
Any coaching hire that came in was doomed to suffer under Gettleman's mismanagement. The only reason Daboll has a chance is that the Giants have finally turned that page.
I wanted Rhule or Rodriguez
Spiciest Memelord : 9/21/2022 10:53 am : link
Mcadoo, Shurmur, and Judge were obvious F tier prospects, I put Daboll in C tier at the time of hiring and Rhule and Rodriguez were B tier prospects.

Thought Car owner and Snyder played the Maras like a drum.

Rhule
Costy16 : 9/21/2022 11:11 am : link
Will likely be added to the list of college coaches who didnt succeed in the NFL.

Tepper is a smug arrogant owner too. He is not popular with the fan base.
Oh sure, we dodged a bullet

Yeah, but between bad and less bad it's actually better to hire bad because the mistake is more obvious and you can fire him quickly and bring someone else in. Carolina will probably give Rhule a couple of more years... and then fire him.
Rhule has shown to be nothing but....
MOOPS : 9/21/2022 2:50 pm : link
a Snake Oil Salesman at the NFL level. Shame he has to deal with that pesky draft and salary cap to stock his pond. Not like college, hey Matt?

He's also shown how NOT to go about finding your franchise QB, bring in other teams' discarded trash. Tough to get that Instant Gratification when you're in rebuild mode. One or the other Matt. You can't handle both.

ASU has an opening Matt. If you get fired soon enough maybe you got a shot there.

I'll admit..
LawrenceTaylor56 : 9/21/2022 3:06 pm : link
I was all in on Rhule. I wasn't sold on Judge until his introductory Press Conference.

Was severely wrong. Used Car salesman and snake oil salesman.
I was wrong about Rhule, but I stand by what I said…

Or are the Giants just holding their flaccid johnsons? What a fucking shit show this franchise has become. The Giants didn’t even manage to interview their top candidate. Fucking pathetic job by Mara Tisch. And this nothing to do with whether or not Rhule turns out to be the next great NFL coach. The Giants couldn’t even get the guy in the building. Fucking pathetic. Absolutely fucking pathetic. And remember, this is the second time the Giants have been left with only second level coaching candidates. Hey Mara Tisch, you guys are the laughing stock of the NFL.
with the offer Tepper gave him
UConn4523 : 9/21/2022 3:41 pm : link
I wouldn't have left without signing either. I don't think that's a Giants thing, it was a fairly loud mouthed billionaire flexing in his first year thing and Rhule would have been a fool to risk leaving that contract on the table.
Thanks
cosmicj : 9/21/2022 3:44 pm : link
Sean!
I did second cosmicj's comment...
bw in dc : 9/21/2022 3:50 pm : link
in that thread. I NEVER liked Rhule. Thought he was Fool's Gold and should stay at the college level. But the connect-the-dot crew fell in love with his local roots and his brief stay as a Giants OL coach.

But both teams made colossal mistakes - Carolina on Rhule and NYG on Judge.

Sounds like my reaction.
I was level-headed!
Mike in Long Beach : 9/21/2022 4:24 pm : link
Didn't get the Rhule hype at all, though it was disappointing to me only because I thought it meant Garrett was going to be the next coach... wasn't far off.
Judge is such a lunatic he fired himself
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/21/2022 6:06 pm : link
Rhule might not be good, but let's not understate what a flaming train wreck judge was over two years. The Panthers seem strong and stable by comparison. Fighting his OL coach, coaching scared, lunatic fringe press conferences. Disaster hire. Worse than McAdoo and Rhule easily.
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 9/21/2022 6:53 pm : link
Jason F'ing Garrett is going to be our next head coach isn't he?
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 1/7/2020 10:10 am : link
Just F me.

Haha. Well he wasn't hired as the lead dog, but Mara-& I'm 99.9% sure of this-forced Garrett on JJ.
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 9/21/2022 6:54 pm : link
I suspect Rhule will end up back in the college ranks in the coming seasons. I wouldn't be surprised if Tepper fires him midseason.
He signed a 7 year 62m contract
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/21/2022 6:57 pm : link
This is the 3rd season, I believe. I guess if anyone can eat that contract it's Tepper.
TTH.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 9/21/2022 7:09 pm : link
Judge shoulda been fired after that Bears presser, which was UFB.
I stand by my comments
pjcas18 : 9/21/2022 7:11 pm : link
then and now.

I also was very skeptical of Judge while most people ate up every word he said, I was curious how people had so much faith in a guy who had never been a coach at any level to be a successful NFL head coach, and he'd never even been a positional coordinator, just special teams.

So, for now on, I suggest I be the sounding board for all topics on here, even NFT because it's clear I have better judgment than most of you. Even when I'm talking out of my ass.
pj.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 9/21/2022 7:16 pm : link
I bought the JJ hype after his intro presser. I'll admit it. I think I'm not alone in that either.

As for being only a ST coach, so was primarily John Harbaugh & he's done quite well in Baltimore.

Judge turned out to be a fraud.
I thought my comment aged well in one way and not in another
Essex : 9/21/2022 7:51 pm : link

While this is an embarassment for the franchise
Essex : 1/7/2020 10:08 am : link
as he was the guy we wanted, this may well be a blessing in disguise. This was as risky a hire as they get.

I laughed when I read that comment in that He was extremely risky but when I said “as risky a hire as they get” who knew the backup plan was a ST Blowhard that they were about to detonate in a few hours

no one needs to explain themselves. People who try and call out others are usually assholes. People have a right to feel what they want and say what they feel. Then times change and as new details become available then opinions evolve. It's called life. I was just busting balls.
