NFT: Strat-o-matic Baseball

BillKo : 9/21/2022 11:20 am
A friend of mine recently purchased the board game, brining back memories of playing it in our teenage years.

Who else here played/still plays it? For someone who collected baseball cards, those Strat cards were the next best thing!

Also, they have had for some time now a PC version of the game which I have seen on various YouTube channels and it looks pretty neat with a host of options.

Do any of you play any other baseball simulation games....it seems there are a lot to choose from in the market.
Used to play it thirty years ago...

My cousin had APBA baseball and I had Strat-O-Matic and we would argue which game was best and most accurate. Good times.
i was actually just looking...

The hockey one too (went to camp upstate, with a lot of kids from the Montreal area).
I still play it from time to time
Jints in Carolina : 9/21/2022 11:44 am : link
I roll dice with the cards and enter the results on the PC game so it will keep all my stats.
I still play online occasionally

on SOM 365 (used to be on Sporting News until Hal took it over directly). If you think BBI gets contentious, you should see the SOM message boards when someone builds a team that somehow takes advantage of a random loophole to game the system.

There are a lot of other baseball games out there

2 that I highly recommend are Inside Pitch and Pay Off Pitch Baseball.
I played it and other games

as a kid I loved board games...
BillKo : 9/21/2022 11:57 am : link
....of course before Atari came out lol

I never did play APBA, but I did have a Sports Illustrated game called "Extra Innings" which was the same idea - player cards (smaller) but I do remember the game having a lot more options and random stuff that could happen.

Speaking of SI, Paydirt was my go-to football game........
Loved it...

...but the best baseball boardgame ever is Pursue The Pennant
I play a game OOTP

which is like a 21 century version of stratomatic/slash Micro League. It is crazy how in depth the simulation is but it does not have the board game aspect of Stratomatic (dice, chance, etc).
I played it
Rod in St Cloud : 9/21/2022 12:38 pm : link
both baseball and football. One of my favorite board games. It was great for playing with the old baseball guys like Ruth, Mays, Mantle, etc
Played it with my college suitemates

Played both baseball and football
HomerJones45 : 9/21/2022 1:00 pm : link
played a ton of football. Replayed whole seasons.

Also played APBA both football and baseball.

They are all a lot of fun. Unfortunately, of the 3 of us who were steady players, one has passed and the other is in a long term care facility. Life moves on.

Hope you all roll plenty of 2's and 12's and for you APBA players 11's and 66's.
Did a little baseball with my dad
Aaroninma : 9/21/2022 1:21 pm : link
He used to do whole seasons, keeping stats, doing game recaps, etc.

We played a lot of strato football though. He had binders of seasons for that. I loved playing as a kid.
Didn't play the baseball
JohnF : 9/21/2022 1:22 pm : link
but I used to play Strat-o-matic football with friends years ago. I still remember playing the Giants in that game when they were lousy, and Pete Athos (who had a zero rating!) couldn't stop anyone. Good times!

Aloha GD, hope you’ve been well. I’ve still been playing SOM online…had a run of 3 straight mystery league championship seasons this spring, started to think I might have figured it all out…then got destroyed in a 100 loss season the next time. Have to admit a little luck is always involved:)
I will always remember
Dave on the UWS : 9/21/2022 1:40 pm : link
I played the entire NY Mets 1973 season, wound up 82-80 (if I remember correctly they were 83-79 in real life). Seaver had a monster season, managing all the injuries was a real chore but pretty cool.
For anyone potentially interested...

This is what i was talking about above. Its awesome for leagues.

I said Extra Innings.

It was actually called Statis Pro Baseball.

Played it a ton as a kid in the 70's.

When they came out with the "advanced" game with the lefty/righty pitcher and batter cards, it was the best thing ever.

I can still hear those dice rattling across the carboard game board.

Played in many leagues in 70s
Earl the goat : 9/21/2022 3:08 pm : link
Used to go to Glen head Ny in February to get the set directly from manufacturer

2-8. 2-9. 2-10 2-11 2-12. Gone
BillKo - nice thread!!!

I loved Strat-o-matic! My prime years were 86-89. Rickey Henderson was AAA stealing in 88 (Vince Coleman in 87, I believe). We would randomly pick guys and compile teams. Ken Phelps from the Yankees and Carlton Fisk, who was on the White Sox had great power hitter cards because of the small sample. Gregg Jefferies in 88. Great memories.
Played all the Strat-o-matic

games. Baseball and football the best, in basketball just fed Jabbar the ball, hockey sucked.

Played it in the 60s. Later my son and I played.
Played a lot of Strat-O-Matic in my youth

These days I play Scoresheet. It has current season (2022) stats, lineups, rotations, and bullpens. Wins and losses.

I loved playing teams of different eras, never did the season long thing. there was a rip off Superstars of Wrestling game I played ad nauseam as well.
Never played baseball
Gman11 : 9/21/2022 9:35 pm : link
But I did play football, basketball and hockey in the 70s. Football was my favorite. I bought the computer game in the early 2000s so I could play solo. It was just ok.
I was introduced to APBA baseball by a friend when I was 11.
SuperRonJohnson : 9/21/2022 10:06 pm : link
My parents bought me the APBA 1972 Football game. I was hooked on it and constantly played it. Loved it! Got me interested in coaching for real. Now I'm 62 and still have my well worn original with all the cards. I'm still coaching football as well.
I didn't have strat o matic
Matt M. : 9/21/2022 10:17 pm : link
I had a cheap knockoff by Milton Bradley. It wasn't great, but I spent hours playing it and kept stats.
