How much will Thomas cost...

MarvelousMike : 9/21/2022 11:29 am
if he is signed to long term deal this off season? I believe this should be #1 priority in the off season ahead of lots of speculation about Jones and Barkley. Got to keep the home grown talent in NY/NJ.
for a young top OT
DaddyM89 : 9/21/2022 11:38 am : link
Think at a minimum $20 mil a year..
start here and revise upwards
Eric on Li : 9/21/2022 11:38 am : link
probably best to do an extension before wirfs gets paid since that's probably also going to be similar even though he's a RT.

early extensions as undermarket as possible are probably the best use of the upcoming cap space - if they can get their evaluations right.

He is still on contract for next year
Amc825 : 9/21/2022 11:41 am : link
With a fifth year option available in 2024. Would it not make more sense to let him play out more of his Rookie Contract before we have to pay him $15+ million per season?
A tad early isn’t it?
eli4life : 9/21/2022 11:41 am : link
With the 5th year and tags he isn’t going anywhere why waste the rookie deal
Still a year away
JonC : 9/21/2022 11:44 am : link
perhaps they get a deal done to replace his fifth year, but there's no rush.

Highest paid at his position.

23m+/yr and happy to pay it!

Do you think that McKinney gets an extension this offseason? He will be entering the final season of his rookie deal and he has turned into a star.
I think it would technically be an extension
Rudy5757 : 9/21/2022 12:04 pm : link
of his existing deal to help both sides. We extend him at the end of the season and give him a bonus so he gets money now. It adds years to his rookie deal but the money is less because he still has time on his rookie deal. Player gets money now rather than wait and risk injury. Both sides win.

We still have cost control for 2 more seasons so no rush for the Giants.
Not too early
Spiciest Memelord : 9/21/2022 12:31 pm : link
if you can lock him into some sort of long term "home town discount".

The benefit for Thomas is he gets something long term and guaranteed in return.

Think X getting 4 yrs. 60 million. He may be a top 5 safety at this point. I really notice him on the field. Don’t know if it makes sense to keep love too. Guess we will see how Benton looks. U can only commit so much to each position
One week X-Man is Ed Reed

last week he was Troy Polamalu.

I would prefer to see McKinney get 5-6 years. As for Love I would keep him as well. The Giants have plenty of holes and I wouldn't create another one by letting Love walk via free agency.
DG was an awful GM but those first 2 picks
Breeze_94 : 9/21/2022 1:05 pm : link
In 2020 were an absolute home run.

Thomas and McKinney are centerpieces and future pro bowl/all pro players
Still a bit early on Thomas. Maybe dialogues start
Jimmy Googs : 9/21/2022 1:30 pm : link
this time next year...maybe a little later? Upper Tier Left Tackle deals are averaging $20-23M/year now.

Assume a nice healthy increase to that by the time this thing is all penned up based on NFL inflation and the pitch of his development curve assuming no injuries.

An expensive must-have based on the positional value...
It’s a year early for both
BillT : 9/21/2022 1:43 pm : link
I guess you could pay them early and hope the added year at FMV might be negotiated into a marginally lower yearly rate. I don’t think you see it much nowadays. The last Giant I remember getting that was Osi I believe.
Some teams
uther99 : 9/21/2022 2:00 pm : link
extend after 3 years. Might be nice to lock him up
Why pay him ?
JoeyBigBlue : 9/21/2022 4:22 pm : link
When we can trade him for the biggest return possible. This whole roster needs to be gutted…. Poster who shall not be named
Seems like the Eagles always extend their best players early
US1 Giants : 9/21/2022 4:30 pm : link
to long contracts.
The earlier you sign
ElitoCanton : 9/21/2022 5:05 pm : link
the lower the cost. The cap goes up ever year. It would not be smart to wait until year 4. Do it as soon as you can.

Not sure, but he's going to fetch a pretty penny if he keeps playing @ this rate.

Agreed. We are in year -1 of a 4 year rebuild. By the time we are good he will be washed. He’s not a part of the solution and won’t be on the next Super Bowl roster. I’d trade him now for draftirium (future draft asset Capitol picks)

Think you have Thomas confused with Barkley. barring injury, 4 years from now Thomas (and Neal) will still be the anchors for this line.
And, if we want to get technical
FStubbs : 9/21/2022 10:03 pm : link
At least today, on 9/21/22, the Giants are undefeated lol.

There’s always a rush if you think he’s a long term piece. The earlier (and longer - of course that bit the Boys in the ass with Smith) they sign, cheaper they are. Cowboys love early, long term deals for their homegrown talent. It’s a big reason why they hardly have issue with cap

I'm a big proponent of early extensions. Would definitely make McKinney a priority this offseason. Would be interested in Lawrence but have the fifth-year option thru 2023 so some flexibility. Thomas fifth-year option locks him up thru 2024, so could wait until after next season

if all 3 were to happen, I think you'd have to go back to Shepard (16), OBJ (14), and JPP (10) to find the last 3 nyg draft picks who made it to multi-year extensions with the nyg.

Earlier in the offseason I mentioned the prospect of trading Andrew Thomas before he gets to a second contract. My thesis was based on the Laremy Tunsil trade which netted 2 first rounders, a second rounder and a few players. In a few years AT will be asking for upwards of $25 Mil guaranteed and that’s a huge cap hit. Many of the experts have pointed out that the difference between the best LT and a good LT is not as much as the difference between a good CB and the best CB.

If we could get a couple of first rounders and a second for AT do you think that would be a wise deal to make rather than paying him top LT dollar.

Ed says: Alan, the Giants have been looking for a top-tier left tackle for a looooong time. Now, they have one and you’re talking about trading him away. I don’t get it. There are financial decisions the Giants will have to make, but GM Joe Schoen is trying to put the Giants into a healthy cap situation where they don’t have to make a decision on whether or not they can afford to keep one of their best players. That’s why he doesn’t want to kick money down the road.

Trade Thomas? Not unless the Giants get to that point and feel they have no way of paying him. I think Schoen is determined to make sure he isn’t in that situation..

Yes, giving him an extension after year three (assuming no lingering injury issues or ridiculous contract demands) is the right thing to do. Under the CBA agreement, players don't even have the right to an extension until after year three, so in exchange for relinquishing that freedom, draft picks who have performed well above their current pay rate should be given a fair, market-value extension.

The formula for that long term extension will factor in his 4th year salary under the original contract along with the option year salary (because Giants will have exercised the option). So the $20M+/year average salary would come in the form of "new money" (e.g., a four year extension on a six year deal with a total value of roughly $100M)
