Yankees floating Michael Kay in trade push for Apple’s historic Aaron Judge game. The Yankees have tried to facilitate a trade with Apple, offering Michael Kay, David Cone and Paul O’Neill plus production support to put Friday’s Yankees game on YES, The Post has learned. While Apple and MLB have so far declined the offer to put the game on YES, Kay is in play on a loaner deal that would make him part of the Apple broadcast for Friday night as Aaron Judge approaches Roger Maris’ record of 61 homers. At this point, even if Kay is involved, the game would still not be on YES. Apple TV+ is scheduled to have the exclusive broadcast of the game Friday. While it is a subscription service, Apple has been offering its Friday night MLB games for free. It is scheduled to have the broadcast team of play-by-player Stephen Nelson, Hunter Pence and Katie Nolan on the call. Kay’s role has not been finalized, but as the TV voice of the Yankees, he would presumably make the Judge calls if he does the game. |
The worst....and to think they might broadcast history.
Where's Vin Scully and Jack Buck when you need them?
There is no way in hell Kay actually said he doesn't rehearse calls. That's a joke.
So basically this just means Kay gets to call it, doesn't really mean anything for the viewers.
The best was him Monday saying the Yankees had the best weekend over the Giants and Jets and then talked about them for 2 hours to start his show..
What about the Yankees fans who bough tickets for tomorrow nights game? You are basically punishing them.
Well. it means viewers have to/get to listen to Kay.
Could he be any worse?
You're also punishing... Judge, who I assume would prefer (at least mildly, he seems like a pretty even keeled guy) to hit 61/62 at home. Sure, let's deny our star and our fans the chance for a historic moment at home over some petty broadcast rights bullshit.
Yankees are on Apple TV one day, Amazon Prime the other, and PeacockTV the next. It really is a joke. No wonder baseball is dying and only popular in local markets you cant even watch the games.
+ infinity
Almost as bad as Paul O'Neill talking last night about Tatis's two-grand-slam inning in 1999 (after Torres hit his 2nd HR of the 8th inning) as though he was there, and not as if he had just googled "most RBIs in one inning" as I'm sure he did.
But O'Neill wasn't there. He was playing RF for the Yanks at the time when it happened.
Apple paid good money for these MLB games. Not sure why they'd give up a game that has a chance to get a huge amount of viewers. I'm rooting for Judge to hit as many HRs as possible (and beat Bonds somehow) but would be great if somehow Kay misses out on the call. He's one of the biggest douchebags in sports.

And I paid good money for MLBtv that advertises 'all out of market games.'
With the exception of David Cone there is nothing worth listening to on YES. Hopefully Michael Kay is nowhere near the game tomorrow.

You would rather miss potentially seeing Judge's 61st(+) HR(s) live just so that you can skip commercials?
That's a serious commitment to being a whiny brat. Boo fucking hoo, you have to watch commercials on a live sporting event, wahhhhh!
Apple TV+ plus is no less accessible than the YES network. You don't even have to subscribe to get the game.

Not really true. Despite people leaving cable in droves their viewership is fairly strong and figures to get better once the streaming options settle down.
Was everyone expecting sports to just cleanly appear on streaming with no issues whatsoever? You can complain about it or root for it to fail if it makes you happy, or you can see the tremendous upside and improved user experience once the dust settles.

Don't tempt them.

Thanks for the neat Forbes article. Odd that my own baseball thinking and, at least earlier in the season, preoccupation with the dreariness of certain ad streams (like MLB's awful ones) and the dullness of certain game commenters, never took into account the force of these factors and what drives them. Now you've corrected that.

and shoots themselves in the foot in the process. The best story of the year and the vast majority of fans, not just Yankee fans, won't be able to see it. But that's okay as long as the owners get their gold.

I have MLBtv and I have an Apple Acct, too. But Apple makes you log in each game. My MLBtv is one log in for the year. Who wants to have to look up their password of the 500 you already have.
Then 1/2 inning into watching, it made me log in again, followed by a redirect to a subscription page, followed by a 3rd log in to get back to the game. Lost 1/2 inning to that process...
What is the point of buying the MLBtv package if they keep whittling away at the games shown on it. Thankfully we have a Prime account and that one actually remembers(or the TV does) your password.

Yeah logging in every time would annoy me too but maybe I’ve just been lucky and haven’t had to.
My TV has a bunch of apps loaded including Apple and Prime and I guess I just stayed logged in after the first time using each. The only thing I see each time is what user is watching as family members each have login capabilities. It’s a simple click on the icon highlighting my name and I’m good to go.
Also wanted to add my .02 to the announcing last night. It was on a par with Sterling bad for me but at least I could mute and still watch. No such option when I’m in the truck or yard and have to listen to that bore.
I will say I’ll never complain about Kay again though after suffering through a few innings of the Apple crew last night. Holy hell were they bad and if that is what Apple is planning for football I hope they don’t get the rights.
So, I can see most games if I want to. If I miss one, I can find the highlights. I understand Apple games are free with an account, no subscription required. But, what about a lifelong fan who does not have an Apple account and is not tech savvy at all? That fan potentially misses out? There are fans who haven't missed a game for decades that couldn't watch more than 2 dozen games this year. I don't care if that amounts to such a small percentage. It is not right.
