The front office thought otherwise though.
“The decision-makers with the Giants felt like they weren’t overly impressed with how he played or what his potential was,” said Garrett, an analyst on NBC’s “Football Night in America” and Notre Dame telecasts. “To me, Coop is not someone who wows you physically. Sometimes you get caught up in that. Sometimes those decisions happen.” |
Other Giants coaches at the time, including Joe Judge, liked Rush’s makeup, too, sources said. The rest of the NFL is catching on now — three weeks after the Cowboys again put Rush through waivers for any team in the league to steal. |
“Where people have made mistakes on quarterbacks through the years is they get enamored with the wrong things,” Garrett said. |

Advantage: Cowboys
I think history will show Garrett is a perfectly average NFL head coach, who ended up on a child’s staff, surrounded by a bunch of that child’s friends.
Advantage: Cowboys
Based on what? I'd rather have Tyrod than Rush.

Maybe? I’d have to see overwhelming evidence he wasn’t in charge of last years offense to think that. And Mike McCarthy did his Jason garret impression in Dallas in 2021 so there’s that too.

Based on watching the games. Taylor was poor in the preseason and did not look remotely as effective as Rush did against Cincy.

Well, there you go, then. Tyrod looked mediocre in preseason with the 3rd and 4th team. Without doubt, a clear indictment of his ability...

The irony here is that if Mara pushed Garrett on Judge, he probably was right to do so considering who Judge hired on his staff.
Giants will have to play much better than their past 12 match ups with Dallas if they want to finally beat this dam team, especially in prime time while having a ceremony at half to honor former players
Also, maybe the drop off from Dan is not so much because ram is overrated.

Personally, I don’t doubt Garrett had a big hand in the offense. I just think Judge was the driving force behind bringing on some of the boneheaded skill position players. And then add all of his lackeys on the offensive staff, and I don’t Garrett was in a good situation.
I’m not enamored with Garrett as a football mind, but I think he’s a ring above Joe Judge.

+1. What I don’t understand is why Garrett took the Giants OC job.
Limited playbook, just don't make mistakes.
Over 17 games the world would quickly realize Rush is not an NFL QB.

Garrett's father was a former player and coach for the Giants, and Garrett himself is a former Giant.

I don't think the Cowboys are nursing him. They're running the same plays.
The players just play harder for him. And he has some skill.
in dallas their offense took a leap forward when he was there thanks to kellen moore modernizing their attack plan and jason garrett seemed intent on not learning from that part of his experience at all.

Allegedly we drafted Andrew Thomas - the best draft pick of the Gettleman era - because Garrett pounded the table for him.

the nyg organization may have been slightly better off hiring him as head coach instead of judge. but the way he ran his offense and his judgement w/r/t columbo seems to indicate he still has no idea how to be a winning coach in the nfl.

people tied themselves in knots but Andrew Thomas was a chalk pick. mcginn had him as his top overall OT and easily forgotten 2 of the other top OTs didn't even play LT (wirfs/wills).
i also dont believe any individual person in an organization can pound the table for a pick that high and sway things other than a head coach or gm. those are organizational discussions that were probably settled or at least short listed a month or more ahead of the draft.
Now, maybe Mara sold this to Garrett, and when Garrett arrived, he found Judge had other ideas, and the two didn't mesh.
Or, maybe Garrett was mistaken how much of a boss he was going to be, and the two didn't mesh.
Or, maybe Garrett got what he wanted, and couldn't produce.
I don't think Garrett can be painted as a victim. He was part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Little early for the "i always knew he was special even when others didn't" victory lap. Wink should destroy this f-ing guy.

This is one of the most amusing and on point analogies ive read here in a while, well done
Cooper Rush did little vs Cincinnati and will meet Wink Martindale Monday night. Let's see the results.

Agree about Rush. While the Giants haven’t been afraid to make backup QBs look like Joe Montana over the years, let’s see how this guy does tomorrow night before we fit him for his gold jacket
Joe Judge has a lot to learn. He’s obviously got time on his side. Getting beat out by Matt Patricia as a play caller doesn’t bode well for him. I have no guess on what’s next for him.
Judge bought into his own shit, filled the staff with a bunch of lackeys, and fell on his face.

I think Garrett lacked some of the creativity that we are seeing from Daboll/Kafka, but if Garrett was as terrible as his detractors claim I think we would see meaningful improvement this season. Which I don't think we have yet.
I tend to agree Garrett is average.
He may not have the creativity of some other offensive coaches but the big problem for the Giants has been talent. Most of the offensive issues are rooted in the OL for a decade. The big WR additions added last year? Ok. The OL they beloved in? Ok.
I don't follow the Cowboys very closely but I can't recall where he was ever in danger of losing a team in 9 years. Perhaps the last year some of that came out but I think his players respected and played hard for him. That says something imv.
He is 29 but has only ever been on the Dallas roster.

Yes, and usually the practice squad, always coming back to Dallas as no one picks him up.
