The Truth about Toney?

Reale01 : 9/25/2022 12:20 pm
The simple truth is we are frustrated because he does not play and we do know he has great potential. We have seen it as recently as last week when he made an unbelievable move on the play that was called back.

That is all we KNOW. He has great potential and does not play enough.

As far as I know
We do not know that he does not care enough about the team.
We do not know that he does not prioritize football.
We do not know the extent and affect of his injury(s).
We do not know he has not picked up the offense.

Are you insiders that know these things or simply frustrated fans who are swinging at air?

At some time you move on from players that cannot stay on the field - I don't think we are anywhere near that point, but we don't know what is happening behind the scenes.

A question for those who want to get rid of him.
What would be the least you would take?
A future draft pick - what round?
Would you just release him if we can't make a trade?

This is not a court of law. It’s not about what we KNOW. It’s about we believe. Good players play on the field and produce. Good players practice to get better. If it smells like crap and it looks like crap that’s what it is. The guy shows up to collect a paycheck.
He’s selfish individual who doesn’t care about his teammates. I hope somebody on our team straightens his sorry ass out.

Fair enough view. Practice, Play, Produce and he is 0-3. That said, I am not sure he is a "selfish individual who does not care about his teammates". Time will tell.

this point, I still assume that Toney cares greatly about football, and that injuries are what are preventing him from getting on the field. The problem is that he had a pretty significant injury history in college which has now continued in the NFL. His body may not be able to handle the rigors of playing football, at least not at this level.

I'm sure the Giants would have already put Toney on IR if they thought that was the best course of action. Trading him is not really an option this year because of the salary cap hit, and we wouldn't get much in return. It's better just to keep him.

I do agree that if he plays very little this year that he might be cut in the offseason. As a first round pick, even from a former regime, he will be given a lot of consideration. But that consideration isn't limitless. My own view is that Jones, Shepard, Slayton, and Golladay will be gone next year. I'm a little less sure now about Barkley and Sills given what they've done in the first two games. Toney might be gone as well, but like Golladay, he's here to stay this year. He's an electrifying player at a position where we are very thin. Let's allow this to play out the rest of the season before making a final decision.

Well said.

According to Leonard, “There was some internal momentum for bailing on Toney during his tumultuous rookie season a year ago. His commitment came into question behind the scenes during his rookie year due to lack of playbook study, poor meeting behavior and frequent injuries.”

Bingo. And Toney has been showing us since the start. He's not long for this team.
Aww the cleats, the cleats
Blu4ever : 9/25/2022 10:10 pm : link
He missed his first practice because the cleats wern't right. That might have been an easily forgotten incident, but subsequent excuses make it a sham. And, when taken in context, audacious and rubbing mgmt's collective noses in it.
Always the possibility that that's wrong and we'll see a talented Toney contributing, but that gets increasingly unlikely.
Point about OBJ ....
Manny in CA : 9/25/2022 10:45 pm : link

It worked out for him, eventually (before he self distracted). I see a lot of OBJ in Toney. I hope things work out for him and the team.
I don’t think
AcesUp : 9/25/2022 11:48 pm : link
OBJ and Toney are anything alike. The through-line may be maturity but they couldn’t be any more different. OBJ cared too much, Toney doesn’t at all. OBJ had too much ego and Toney needs more ego. They’re so different that I think the perfect disposition may be a balance between the two.

Phil Simms? Really?
Greg from LI : 9/26/2022 12:11 am : link
Simms’ injuries were a separated shoulder (twice), torn knee ligaments (which robbed him of his speed, he was pretty mobile early in his career), and a broken thumb. Toney has a new minor injury every single week, it seems. There is no comparison.

I don't see Odell in Toney at all. Odell was almost passionate about football to a fault. At some points, he cared *too* much and acted like a dope because of it... the Carolina game, the kicking net, etc.

Odell made gigantic impacts in games early and often in his career. All we're talking about with Toney is what he "could be" because we almost never see it on a football field in games that matter.

Toney is NOTHING like Odell. Odell cared and actually produced. Toney has done neither of those two things. Monumental bust he probably will be cut after this season.
Toney needs a change of venue
VinegarPeppers : 9/26/2022 11:36 am : link
This guy needs to go to a team that isn’t devastated by injuries virtually every season so they can afford to have him only play 35 to 40% of the season, every season.

Maybe if he grew his eyebrows back it would help. I mean, WTF!

He has been real busy recording music. I actually like some of the tracks. "Sum 2 Prove" has a nice beat to it.
