New York Giants vs Dallas Cowboys Pre-Game Discussion

Huge game for the franchise
jvm52106 : 9/26/2022 7:24 am : link
And hopefully for true signs our rebuilding is finally heading down the right path.

Think of it this way, we win and we are one of three without a loss. Every win for this organization is a bigger win for the culture of the organization than any other change we have tried over the last 5 years.

I think we see Toney go to IR, a WR brought off PS and we stop watching week to week for the next 4 weeks...
Need to see Jones play well here
Ned In Atlanta : 9/26/2022 7:34 am : link
no more excuses. Move the ball into the redzone and score points.
I agree that Jones
Clintqb17 : 9/26/2022 7:45 am : link
needs to have a really good game. But let’s not put it all on him. Line needs to play well and the receivers need to get separation and make big plays.
After watching games yesterday

I see a lOT of very average to below average QB play.

Cousins was pretty average until the very end.

Goff is Goff.

Mariotta made some really nice plays and then some major bonehead plays.

Geno Smith is very average.

Jimmy G was pathetic against the Broncos

Winston is not good.

What we need is for Jones and the team to keep developing, keep turnovers down and find ways to extend drives.

The Giants were a couple of penalties and dropped passes from putting Carolina away in the 1st quarter last week. Time to see those things cleared up and see drives extended and points scored.
Can't keep settling for FGs.....must get TDs.
George from PA : 9/26/2022 8:10 am : link
Azeez and Thibs should shine...against current status of Dallas OL.

Giants OL must step up.....no excuses.

Protecting Jones and letting Barkley shine

I'm tempted to blow off of work around noon and drive down for the game, which is a nice temptation to have as a fan, even if it's only week 3.
I think the defense will play well
averagejoe : 9/26/2022 8:15 am : link
and the offense will struggle as usual. No more excuses. We need to score TD's in the red zone. Don't wanna lose another 17-9 snoozer. DJ has to be better than Cooper Rush. Is that too much to ask ?
For the people
mittenedman : 9/26/2022 8:16 am : link
saying Jones MUST score s bunch of points vs. DAL - pump the brakes. DAL has an outstanding defense - they arent going to give up a lot of points.

We need Jones to play a winning brand. Expect another nail-biter, at best.

Jalen Hurts (3-0)

Passing
66 for 98 (67.3% Completion)
305 Passing Yards per Game
4 TDs / 1 INT

Rushing:
37 Carries for 167 Yards
4.5 Yards per Attempt
10 First Downs / 3 TDs

No one in the NFC is QBing better than Jalen Hurts. And no team in the NFL is better than the Eagles.

Lets not forget our QB sacks himself a lot. Holds the ball . Makes everybody look bad. OL and WR . OL would look much better if ball came out on time .

But he might want to consider it with Parsons against Neal. You chip Parsons with Bellinger and a lot of Dallas’ pass rush is hampered.

I hear ya, save for one thing. This offensive line isn't exactly giving Daniel Jones the opportunity to hold the ball for too long. I've seen very few clean pockets through the first 2 games.

I think that's the way to go, but one problem. Our Center is getting pushed back into our QB's face. And the Guards haven't fared much better.

into the Giants are a playoff team mentality. This game means little in the big scheme of things. Dallas is a good team defensively with potentially a great pass rush. Giants can win this game...but I do not expect a thing of beauty.
Interesting game even without Dak
Sammo85 : 9/26/2022 9:08 am : link
Some concern with how many Giants are banged up especially on D line. Can see Cowboys trying to do a lot of screens and off tackle runs.

Think Giants can win if line holds up a bit better. Wonder if we see something more from Golladay after the drama earlier in week?

Interesting to see what Wink has in store and what Dan Quinn may do on other side to try and get some turnovers.
I would say that
Alamo : 9/26/2022 9:08 am : link
In practice this week, there was alot of brain thrusts
looking for any or all ways to slow down Parsons..
The Kowboys have other pass rushers that are good, but no one else comes close to a LT type player..We need to score 24 pts to win this game..Whether it's 3 TD's
and 1 FG or 8 FG'S..When you think about it,8 FG's means you have had the ball the most, and the Kowboys
haven't had the ball a whole lot..A win is a win,no matter how ugly or pretty...

I think the Giants offense is not going to look good against good defensive teams - I don't see how they could given the dearth of offensive weapons and the current state of the oline.

I see the Giants as a work in progress.

It's been wonderful having them win. I do think they can win tonite, but I am not under any illusions about them. I certainly think our coaching staff has been terrific in getting the best out of them, particularly on defense.
What if Neal went to left guard, Bredeson to center and Hamilton
kelly : 9/26/2022 9:23 am : link
To right tackle?

Does that make us better? And would that be a better run blocking line, especially the left side.

Beat Parsons by running right at him.

I hate this argument. Hurts has arguably the best OL in football, two number 1 WR talents, a top 5 TE, and an excellent stable of backs. Just because a dude is putting up stats in that environment doesn’t mean he’s QBing better than anyone in the NFC. Heard the same arguments with Dak. What happens when they played elite defenses of the NFL or needed to win shootouts? Fell short practically everytime or Dak would look terrible. The Eagles are that good so there’s only gonna be really a handful of regular season games to judge and the playoffs. Let’s see him be best the QBer then. You seriously think he’s QBing better than Rodgers right now? For real? Rodgers puts up 45 against that awful WFT defense with the Eagles O.
Defense keeps it close enough for the

That is categorically false. In the grand scheme of things it means a lot. Culture change has to come with winning games too. Yes, we have a ways to go but, when you have a game, a bigger game and you are at home facing a backup QB, you need to make a statement that says the days of falling short and losing when winning was more than possible are now over.

Yes I'd like to see more passing yards per game, but some of that is situational and some of that is because of a Barkley centric gameplan. He has 70%+ in completions, he's only got 1 Int, he has a good passer rating, and he has made some big plays when he has had too. The game plan is be smart, make good decisions, limit turnovers, and control the ball/TOP

The team is stacked and Roseman is doing exactly what he did with their first super bowl win as he hit lotto with Hurts who was really just originally supposed to be insurance for Wentz injury proneness. It’s why he made the trade for the corner and signed Bradberry. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he flips an early pick or two for a proven player in the off-season IF they like what they see when he’s playing the teams on their talent level. Right now scouting Hurts is like scouting the QBs at OSU or Bama. You only gonna get a few times to really scout what they can do on a neutral field.

of disappointing football they’ve been wallowing in for years. Monday night has traditionally been a house of horrors for the Giants. A win tonight could exorcise some demons on the national stage. How would the loss of THIS game mean anything to a rebuilding team in the 'grand scheme of things'? Are we negating the first two wins? Firing the head coach? Will any players future be determined by what happens this evening (outside of injury) Is anyone really under the illusion that this team goes 6-0 in the division this year? Are DJ's critics going declare him the Giants Savior if he plays great and they win?

It's an important game in that it is a divisional game against Dallas. We will feel a little better after a win than we usually do...and it will hurt a little more if they lose.
If Hurts happens to get hurt
Alamo : 9/26/2022 10:44 am : link
Who's going to play QB on that team who's anywhere
near the running ability of Hurts? That's what makes him dangerous..If he gets hurt, and with all that running around he does, the Eagles will get their wings clipped..By the way,if they keep winning alot more games, they will be drafting way down the bottom of the 1st round..They still will be getting vg players but not as good as the top 10/12 players in the draft..

Correct but this is known by the opponents too. Carolina’s linebackers were playing about 2 yards off the LOS, if that.

The lack of pocket this season is due to our Center/Guard unit being crushed inward. As for the tackles... our LT has been great; our RT is hopefully on the road to greatness, but in the meantime he's slipping off some of his blocks making it even more helter-skelter for the QB.

into the Giants are a playoff team mentality. This game means little in the big scheme of things. Dallas is a good team defensively with potentially a great pass rush. Giants can win this game...but I do not expect a thing of beauty.

Wait, what the hell are you talking about. You made the comment that a WIN meant nothing and I disagree with that statement. It isn't a MUST win but a win absolutely means something regardless of "playoffs".

Add to the fact that over the league is pretty fucking average, so why wouldn't a win mean a lot here? Not sure if you noticed but there are a lot of bad teams (bad teams even with more talent)..

I've heard that more than a few times and yet team in the NFC East has won back to back division titles in how long?

Can we see Jalen Hurts do this for more than 3 games in September before we put the Eagles in the Super Bowl?

To say Philly is going to be a major problem the next 5 years - in the NFL - is really absurd.

Wasn't this the take with Wentz? LOL

No one has been able to challenge Philly after three games and a lot of that has to do with their opponents. They've played well but things have a way of changing. It's never easy and they are making it look easy (although they have failed to score in the second half 2 weeks in a row).

Agreed this is going to be an ugly game. Which actually favors Dallas since they have a backup QB and loaded defensive front.

With all of the Dallas injuries, I think the Giants will have more talent on the field tonight. The key will be eliminating disaster plays, stopping the run, and 3rd down efficiency.

16-13 giants is my pick although I’d love to see them score 30+ and win convincingly so we can be an optimistic 3-0

I will catch flack for this, but IMO feeding Barkley into a stacked box is a recipe to lose. Remember that against the Titans, as great as Barkley was, the Giants were a missed FG away from a loss.

The Giants need points, and that means Jones has got to get the ball downfield. 20 points per game is not sustainable if this team wants to keep winning.

On a Giants Cowboys game thread???

This is a huge game for the Giants. Getting to 3-0 can propel this team to a possible playoff spot. If you think of it it terms of record, the Giants would have to play .500 the rest of the way to get to 10-7. Believe it or not, Jones is 6-2 in his last 8 starts.

I had predicted somewhere in the 7-10 win range for this team and sometimes it just takes a little luck. Im not saying this is a good team yet but its showing signs of life and plenty of bad teams have made the playoffs over the years. It just shows that we are not rock bottom anymore.

In the last 10 games..But look how bad the roster for the Giants was..O Line was College level in talent..
The Defense was horrible..And worse then all that was the coaching..More college warranted then the NFL..
So tonight, we have a very different story..We have a little better roster..We have some talent added on Defense..The O Line is a little better..Not great by no means, but with some extra coaching, could surprise the boys tonight..How about that Defense coaching, and game planning and play calling?I think the boys will not be able to withstand what's going to be coming at them..The offense play calling will help DJ,and the O Line..Barkley will get his 70/80 yds,and a score or even 2 of them..We need 1 or 2 WR's to step up tonight..James/Stills could help out alot,if the boys concentrate on Barkley out of the backfield on passing plays..Maybe Slayton catches a long one..Golladay is Golladay..Daydreaming of past history with his old team..God save us!!!

I agree with everything you said, including the score, until the last part of your last sentence. Why do we have to "score 30+ and win convincingly so we can be an optimistic 3-0"?

Dallas has a really good D right now. They held Brady and the Bucs and Burrow and the Bengals to an avg of, i believe 19 pts. We have an OL that's still learning to pass protect and ?s at WR that are still learning the plays.

I also predicted Giants 16-13, but if we win 2-0, it will be an optimistic 3-0 to me, because it will mean we have a kick ass D that's keeping us in games while the O hopefully improves down the road and breaks out against a weaker D.
The great thing about tonight's game is that I am excited!
Walker Gillette : 9/26/2022 1:39 pm : link
Most of the fan base is excited. I fear prime time games, but Cowboys on a Monday night @ home, white out, the atmosphere should be electric. Dallas has Parsons and some other pieces, but their offense with Rush is nothing special and for the first time since Coughlin, I feel like the Giants have a big advantage in coaching, especially against Jones/McCarthy. If they can pull this out, and honestly why can't they, then the team is 3-0 and looking at the Bears and Justin Fields @ home next week! Lets do this and as fans we'll have what we've been talking about for years, meaningful games in October and likely beyond!
This is the type of game that changes expectations
Sean : 9/26/2022 1:39 pm : link
If they win tonight, I think a wildcard spot begins to look like a real possibility. This will be a very tough game. Dallas has a good defense and still dangerous weapons on offense. The Giants have lost to Dallas forever. It’s a game that helps set the tone for the season.

Yep and another very good reason to have picked Brandon Brown as the Asst GM

Re the conversation about QB play:
81_Great_Dane : 9/26/2022 6:52 pm : link
The Bills were trailing by 2, needed a field goal, less than 20 seconds on the clock with no timeouts. Bills & Josh Allen keep throwing underneath over the middle, short of the needed yardage. Even if they complete the pass, they're throwing to a part of the field where they'll have a hard time getting out of bounds or spiking the ball to stop the clock. Is that a dumb QB? Terrible play calling? I'm guessing the Dolphins were guarding the sidelines and the deep middle, leaving the Bills nowhere to go with the ball other than middle underneath. Bills lose by 2.

Trailing by 8, the Bucs needed a TD and a 2-point conversion to tie. Tom Brady barely avoids a delay of game on the TD play, then has a delay of game on the conversation attempt. The TV analyst said he thought they'd walk in on the original attempt. The second attempt is incomplete, Bucs lose by 2.

Obviously, Allen and Brady have earned the benefit of the doubt, and DJ absolutely has not. But what would posts on this Forum say if either of those things happened to the Giants tonight?

My 2 cents' worth: I don't think everything is attributable to the QB. Sometimes the QB has only bad alternatives, and sometimes the D just makes a play. But some things are attributable to the QB. That's where we need to see DJ improve.
