So I know a bunch of you just moved here so wanted to give you the lowdown of what to expect. The winds aren’t are what are dangerous (or this one won’t be as long as your roof is good to go). What is problematic is the storm surge.
Right now it’s looking like a minimum of 5-8 ft surge in Tampa Bay Area unless it shifts to one of the generally lesser accurate models out West. We are looking at a little bit less than a foot of rain and as of now it looks like it will be hitting at approximately high tide of a little over 2 feet with the newer models showing it slowing down.
So what does that mean? Well if your are in evac zone B or lower, you can expect flooding ( generally under 10 ft - although there’s a bit more complicated equation that goes into figuring out the evac zones) and mandatory evacs. I’m in C now and expecting a mandatory evac, but unless it shifts to a direct hit hard to see a scenario it will even flood my area to do damage(plus I’m on second floor) The first floor in my old place would be complete submerged in this scenario. Things can obviously change from now but accuracy tends to be fairly high under 72 hours out.
As far as power goes, the more densely populated and closer to coasts generally you are the quicker they get the power up (when I was on beach for Irma FPL sets up shop at all the empty high rise hotels) If you are in rural areas probably should have a generator by now, but good luck getting one now. What you won’t have though is internet for a long time for some. So make sure you got a bunch of entertainment downloaded as shit can get boring as everything will be closed for a week.
Putting this out there because honestly you really don’t want to evacuate unless you have to as that’s its own nightmare and the less cars on the road the better for people that actually do need to.

Not a good thread at all.
It turned into a typical BBI thread - took a major "Off topic" turn, which has nothing to do with the Hurricane/Original thread purpose.
Maybe this one can stay on topic.

Don’t know if it was earlier but it doesn’t seem bad now but this one reads more of what you should do for new residents which imho both are a good idea so one doesn’t get lost in the other

And I’ve been dealing with these since Andrew and usually it’s a meh wake me when it’s over but this one has my spider senses tingling. If it turns east a bit it will be right at me and suck (the edge of the cone is blocks from my house) but if it goes north to the panhandle and slows as it has we could be talking days of pounding like a couple years ago that one that hugged the east coast a couple days
It wouldn't be to bad should lose strength once it gets inland. But still could be a '2'.

It’s not all about wind force. Sandy was only tropical storm force when it hit NYC.
And newbies, do not go outside to have a look. The flying debris will kill you.
Tapes is also right on FPL returning power. They have a grid and Hospitals, Old Age homes, Gas Stations, Stores, the route 41 corridor(stores and strip malls), get back on line first. There will be small areas that will get passed over to get power back to larger areas. You will need patience. FPL will have outside power companies on standy by to come in and fix the lines. We had a Ontario, Canada company in 2004 working our area. FPL has this shit down.
Yep, couple of propane tanks for the grill to cook. Get ice for your food and load up as many coolers as you can.
Stay safe on the West Coast.

People always focus on the wind, when they should be worried about the water. Storm surge causes far more deaths and damage than does wind.
This one is def a bit more worrying as it looks like it’s gonna do some massive damage to evac A and literally another insurer just announced insolvency today. Glad to be finally leaving next year to be honest.

These insurance companies should be gone after, fined and their officers arrested for fraud. They play the game with exorbitant rates and run away just before hurricane season. They bilk the public and then dump on the state to cover for them.
