NFL ends Pro Bowl

The NFL is replacing the Pro Bowl with weeklong skills competitions and a flag football game, the league announced Monday.

The new event will replace the full-contact showcase started in 1951. It will be renamed "The Pro Bowl Games" and will feature AFC and NFC players showcasing their football and non-football skills in challenges over several days. The 2023 Games will be held in Las Vegas, and the flag football game at Allegiant Stadium is Feb. 5.

Peyton Manning and his Omaha Productions company will help shape programming and promote the event's content throughout the week. Manning, a 14-time Pro Bowl pick during his Hall of Fame career, will provide his perspective and will also be a part of the coaching staff for flag game.

"The Pro Bowl is something that we've been looking at for a while, really continuing to evolve," NFL executive Peter O'Reilly told The Associated Press. "Coming out of last year's game, we really made the decision based on a lot of internal conversations, getting feedback from GMs and coaches, getting a lot of feedback from players. We think there's a real opportunity to do something wholly different here and move away from the traditional tackle football game. We decided the goal is to celebrate 88 of the biggest stars in the NFL in a really positive, fun, yet competitive way.

and the NFL is on record as saying

by the end of the century they expect to replace tackle football with flag football.

So it begins.
I think this is the right move

Flag football and skill competition sounds cool for a year or two . I think the ultimate goal is to end it completely.

What happened to Hawaii?? I would have thought the players loved that. I can see why playing a pro bowl in Orlando stinks
Smart move

The pro bowl has been terrible for years. The skills competitions are actually fun to watch.

The only time I remember someone getting injured during one of those was a beach flag football game for rookies and Robert Edwards of the Pats totally destroyed his knee.

with a flag football game??

I thought the Pro Bowl WAS a flag football game!

About time. This game was such a joke.

On record ... tackle to flag ... by the end of the century.

That's commitment!

None of us will be around for it so ... sounds good! lol

I recalled a post from a few months back about the NFL supporting flag football as an Olympic sport.

When I searched the thread, I noticed you posted it with a quote from Troy Vincent.

But note the phrase "not professional football" in the quote. I read Vincent as promoting flag as an inclusive popular sport but not as acknowledging it as a replacement for professional tackle football.

Quote:
“When we talk about the future of the game of football, it is, no question, flag,” Vincent said. “When I’ve been asked over the last 24 months, in particular, what does the next 100 years look like when you look at football, not professional football, it’s flag. It’s the inclusion and the true motto of ‘football for all.’ There is a place in flag football for all.”

One can legitimately wonder whether the sport can in fact proceed on those two tracks.

Good. Now give up on the flag football game idea
widmerseyebrow : 9/26/2022 1:38 pm : link
And just have an awards ceremony. Only skills challenge I might watch is the old QB challenge.
As someone already said

"committing" to something over the course of the next 100 years is practically a contradiction in terms. What if we have a functional cure for CTE by then?

And in any case, the moral issue with football really isn't so much at the pro-level as it is with the high-school level and under. Grown men who understand the risks of the game should be allowed to risk their bodies playing it. It's kids who can't really conceive of (much less act on) their best interests who we have to worry about.
Flag football game?

So, what changed?
Another NFL half ass decision
ZogZerg : 9/26/2022 1:41 pm : link
Just cancel all that nonsense and have a dinner that honors the players.

Skills competitons stink.
Red Dog : 9/26/2022 1:44 pm : link
Judge had exactly the right idea when he blew off the MLB home run derby.

Next thing you know, the skills damn competitions will replace the actual games.

As for flag football, you have to be shitting me.

Told you guys Daniel Jones would never make a Pro Bowl.
I can see the headlines now
cjd2404 : 9/26/2022 1:59 pm : link
for 2030:
Today the NFL announced the Pro Bowl Games are now sponsored by Madden NFL football. No actual physical activity will be performed by the players voted into the Pro Bowl Games.
With this change one lucky fan will be able to complete against the world's greatest athletes in a NFL Madden tournament with a new NFL Branded XBOX.

* Not valid in all states. Restrictions apply. Winner responsible for all taxes, fees and shipping of NFL branded XBOX.
Non-contact injuries

anyone?...

Not surprising that
Big Al : 9/26/2022 2:20 pm : link
a successful organization faces reality. The only surprise is that it took so long. Has anyone here actually watched much more than 5 minutes of a recent Pro Bowl? Personally I have no interest in watching this new stuff but some will watch.
its about time
mattlawson : 9/26/2022 2:49 pm : link
make it more like rock & jock from back in the day. MTV had it right in the beginning
Good riddance
JoeMorrison40 : 9/26/2022 3:37 pm : link
hah flag football and wait until the 1st injury during the 'skills' competition like 1st to pull a hammy 40 yd dash, one handed broken wrist drill, knee twisting run sweeps, and acl tearing pass rushes. Jeez, just send em to Hawaii and do a episode of 'Making the Cut'
Should be a seamless transition
ghost718 : 9/26/2022 3:37 pm : link
I'm pretty sure most people already thought they were watching flag football
FLOATING AN IDEA...
Arkbach : 9/26/2022 4:34 pm : link
Well decades ago they played college all-stars against the reigning SB bowl champ which was a joke game. So now, what about college all-stars against pro-bowlers sans the SB players. Of course it would be optional and rules will need to be adjusted to minimize injury risk, but the college kids play all-star games anyway so it's the same risk for them.

What adjustment, other than something with minimal physical contact like this change to flag football, would work? I think we know by now that NFL players aren't going to put forth any real physical effort in an all-star game. And if it's going to be flag football (or any other significantly altered form of regular football), why would the college players bother? They want to spend their time playing real football, showcasing themselves for NFL front offices.
That was my point
Arkbach : 9/26/2022 5:45 pm : link
College guys will want to impress playing NFLers and likewise Pro-Bowlers want to embarrass the young-ins.
For years
RicFlair : 9/26/2022 5:55 pm : link
Fans have wanted a skills competition for years, and have complained about the game.

And now everyone’s upset they are doing it.
Pro Bowl
Peedib89 : 9/26/2022 6:50 pm : link
I always thought it would cool to have the selected QB’s get to pick like 2 rbs and 3 wrs from the Pro Bowl selections and do a flag football tournament. Do a 5 on 5 no blitzing type school yard game. Let the linemen do a strength competition. Same thing for the defense, a LB paired with a qb, the LB drafts the d side. Or something of the sort
I like it
Giantimistic : 9/26/2022 8:13 pm : link
If I am walking by a park and there is a flag football game with a bunch of awful players, I can’t help but stop and watch for a little.

I think nfl front offices would be more impressed, and college guys (and their advisers) would know they'd be more impressed, with real football between college guys, all of whom are trying like hell to impress, than backyard touch against nfl'ers who are there for Vegas hotel suites.
Who gives a shit?
