Next Morning thoughts

jvm52106 : 9/27/2022 7:58 am
* first, it is tough listening to GMFB talking Cowboys here..

1) There are a ton of things to bring up overall but let's start with this, the defense came up a bit toothless last night. Missing Leonard Williams was much bigger than most thought. The arrival of Thibs and Ojulari meant nothing overall, minus a deflected pass by Thibs and a holding call caused by AO! ** Our lack of ILB with playmaking ability is a huge issue for our defense.

2) The Giants are literally taking the field with a preseason squad of playmakers. I keep hearing about the Cowboys players being missing but hold up- Lamb, Brown, Pollard, Smith and Ferguson would all be on the Giants and Lamb and Brown would be our best weapons.. We have a whole new system everyone is learning and we have guys that shouldn't be starting, maybe not even playing at all. SS wasn't supposed to be counted on, at least not this early and Sils, James, Hudson all playing significant time.. We are bereft of talent at the wide receiver position which is magnified when you know a huge cap usage is tied to that position with Golladay (absolute waste) and Toney ( he won't be here long).. We are the worst group of WR's in the league and it isn't close.

3) I am NOT worried about Evan Neal yet. Now, he has to get better with his footwork but, he has no help last night. Even the chip blocks were missed and pathetic. Neal also was being teed off on because the Boys didn't worry about our passing game. Neal will develop. * If we get some folks healthy, we may have some depth next year at Oline and just need an addition here or there to be a full on strength.

4) We are who we appear to be, a VERY well coached team. Last night we made chicken salad out of chicken shit most of the game offensively. Our entire offense relied on movement, fakes, QB rolls etc but once we had to go passing mode that was no longer a weapon to use and our lack of Skill position options with Skills becomes a glaring hoke, glaring weakness. Yet, we still could have won that game last night if our defense could have made something happen at any point..

5) What is pretty funny, if we beat the Bears we would be 3-1 after 4 games. No, I am not talking SB, playoffs etc, I am talking getting some wins to change our mindset, get some W's to go with the mental win of our change in management and coaching..

6) Daniel Jones played a pretty impressive game with all that was working against him and with his own limitations. I can be honest in my assessment (unlike most here about Jones- good or bad) and last night he was the reason we were even in the game but he also was a reason we didn't win. One sack was 100% on him as a free rusher to your right ( just based on alignment and blocking direction, says he is your guy to account for) and Jones stared to the left and never saw him coming. There were a few passes that could have and should have been better ( could still have been caught) but you have to make it easier on the receiver (SS crossing on a 3rd down), Golladay on a 4th down play ( though he gives such half ass effort it is embarrassing). I also think there were a few times later in the game where Jones decided way too late to run. *** Jones will not be the QB here next year and I think if a chance to trade him to a QB desperate contender comes up (injuries happen) the Giants HAVE to do it.

7) Thibs (back to him) was rusty as hell but even more interesting was he spent a lot of time, moving around, motioning, gesturing and looking for some sign, some idea where to lineup etc and was Very slow, slow off the snap A LOT! The other thing with him is I saw no pass rush moves, no variation with his rush (again, rusty ???), And that could be very limiting.. I want to see far more from him going forward.

8) Imagine you make a statement saying (paraphrase) I should always be playing and then put up some plays like you did last night. Golladay is so far gone that when the chips were down, we had to pass Daboll played 2 TE's with guys like SS, David Sills, James as our passing options... Injuries or not Golladay has to go, he eats up an actual roster spot , tons of cap space and provides a negative return...

I don't expect a ton this year but I still think we get close to plus .500 with an 8 win season. Beat the Bears to go 3-1 and just look to build on our young players growing.

If injuries pop up at QB elsewhere, take what you can get for Jones. If an offer from a SB contender comes in for Barkley you send him as we are looking to 2023 and beyond.

Jones

Was pressured 25 times last night. Most a giants qb has seen since they started tracking the stat. Bad performance by both lines. I watched Thibs continuously slam into the Dallas tackles like he was expecting to move them, only to get sealed out play after play. Zero pass rush variation. Frustrating to behold.
good post. I agree with your thoughts.

Barkley needs to have A LOT more touches.

Thibs lack of moves was highlighted by Sy56 throughout the draft season. The rust was not helping either. Same for Ojulari.
Agree with everything but Barkley

He’s our best offensive player. Trading him is running up the white flag and quitting on the season. Can’t and won’t happen.

It isn't quitting on the season, it might be acknowledging the fact that he won't be here next year and we need more chances/more options when it comes to the off season.

Again, I don't think we will do it either BUT, a true makeover and rebuild would absolutely do this if he isn't coming back next year.
Theo-line was a complete disaster last night. Guys getting blown up,
BLUATHRT : 9/27/2022 8:26 am : link
moving without getting hands on a defender. It was pathetic. Neal was horrendous and didn't look like a UFA, let alone a top 10 pick. He has a long way to go to learn how to play in this league. I'm hoping that by the end of this year we see the same progress we saw in Thomas. Feliciano is plain bad. Bredeson and Ezudu are liabilities. Glowinski is mediocre at best. They have a ling way to go.
Gettleman Legacy Continues to Kill This Organization

Problem is that the former GM's incompetence left this team with so many holes that it's hard to think about where they start in the next draft and free agency: WR, OL, DB, ILB, TE? So many holes and I did not even mention QB--because despite all the criticism Jones gets here, including from me, he has been the least of the Giants problems this year.

Gettleman's worst draft decision was not Jones or Barkley, but rather passing on Parsons and taking Toney. Parsons can lift a defense by himself much like LT did initially for the Giants.
Gettleman's worst move in free agency is clearly Golladay.
and I'm so fucking tired I can't type or complete a thought.
BLUATHRT : 9/27/2022 8:28 am : link
That's the worst part of the loss for me. A lost next day mentally.
I also agree
Bleedblue10 : 9/27/2022 8:28 am : link
But Jones can’t be perfect on every throw. No qb can there are too many variables to calculate into that equation. He needs to get more help from his wrs. I’m starting to wonder if the actual right move in the draft would’ve been Evan Neal and Drake London or Garrett Wilson and not thibadoux(he gets a pass for last night but I haven’t seen him do shit the three times he’s been on the field all the way back to the pre season)
Last night forced all of us to...
AG5686 : 9/27/2022 8:30 am : link
Pump the brakes.
That was a very good Dallas team out there last night...perhaps even better without Dak???
But they have a great D and far far more weapons on offense, and whipped us on both lines of scrimmage.
Our key rookies looked like...rookies out there.
Surprise surprise
I don't even want to open up the pandoras box we call Daniel Jones...but I felt he played very very well.
He is a top 50%ile guy,and if we can sign him to a reasonable contract I feel we should.
Thibs looks small out there....
Neal needs seasoning, but I saw some really good run blocking out there.
Lets try to remember how few games we won last year, and how many new faces we have on the team now....
Dallas is a playoff team and we played them even for 3 Qs
This team doesnt have the talent at the skill position
nygiants16 : 9/27/2022 8:32 am : link
If they win its going to be ugly, if they lose it is going to look ugly, its really that simple..

I was impressed with Jones he did last night what good QBs are supposed to do, when evwrything is breaking down around you, make plays and put the team on your back and he did that. The offense movdd the ball but to many penalties at bad times, dropped passes..

The defense didnt seem exotic at all, seemed like they were laying back a little bit
Honestly it being Dallas is what bothers me
eli4life : 9/27/2022 8:39 am : link
I just hate that franchise. Other than that we are ahead of where I thought we’d be right now. We have a nice young group to start with and are coached well. One thing I really think is once we can get some more talent (ie. Oline,wr) this offense is going to be a fun one to watch.

One positive from this is when we do get more talent on the roster the depth will be pretty good.
I agree with pretty much everything said
dlauster : 9/27/2022 8:56 am : link
It must be nice to be a Cowboy and be able to circle two wins on your schedule each year.

Gettleman deserves jail time for what he did to this franchise. I mean there has to be a law on the books somewhere right?

We are a work in progress. We need two draft picks for every other team’s one.
Thanks good summary
NJLCO : 9/27/2022 10:25 am : link
What surprised me last night was our defense. First 2 games I thought they played fast and tackled.
Last night it reminded me of our D from the prior years, catching people and dragging them down. They didn’t rally around the ball and no pressure on the QB.
Very disappointed

Passing on Parsons and drafting Toney are 2 separate choices. I can see passing on Parsons. I don’t agree with it but I understand the logic plus a whole bunch of teams passed on Parsons. I don’t get drafting Toney. For one, we had a worse OL last year than this year and this was a good OT available with the 20th pick. But, if we wanted a WR, there were better WRs. And, Toney was known to be a little screwy and had an injury history. For a team trying to build a culture which included healthier players, the Toney pick was very strange.
Wish we could go back in time
Bob in Newburgh : 9/27/2022 11:57 am : link
and take away the flag out of his ass call on the Shepherd "pick."

Definitely stopped what appeared to be some momentum building for the offense. Game may have progressed quite differently from that point.
A lot of bad calls last night
JonC : 9/27/2022 12:01 pm : link
the "pick" was a killer as was the busted run fit Pollard popped for the long run.
