BiteyMax's Next Day Non-Emotional Thoughts

Biteymax22 : 9/27/2022 8:58 am
As usual my “non-emotional” thoughts from yesterday’s game. Feel free to share your own, argue with mine etc…
23-16 Cowboys, we move to 2-1 on the season and now must set our sights on Chicago. It would have been really, really nice to win this game and start 3-0 but it wasn’t in the cards. Last night was a reminder after a 2-0 start that while we’re seeing progress and promise, we still have a way to go building this team. Still, if we go back in time 4 weeks, every single one of us would sign up for 2-1 going into the Bears game…

Offense:

16 points scored, 9 coming on field goals. Its notable the shortest (made) field goal was 42 yards and Barkley’s touchdown was from 36 yards out. We’ve had games where we’ve gotten to the red zone and just couldn’t close, last night we struggled to even get the ball inside the 20. Not a good game for the offense though there were some bright spots.

Jones – Very rarely do you outline an offensive output like I did above and say the QB played well, but I feel like this was the case last night. While the box score reads 20/37 for 196, no TDs and 1 INT it’s a touch misleading. Jones was sacked 5 times and Dallas pressured him more than Jones has ever been pressured in a single game. Every time he dropped back someone was at his feet and I know someone will say “this has been the case the last 2 weeks”, last night was far worse… While Jones still isn’t going to be confused with Josh Allen, he played a solid game last night in a bad situation.

RBs – This is just Barkley as him and Jones split all but 2 carries. Barkley continues to run like a new back. Decisive, less dancing and more than once he just took what was available rather than dancing and taking a negative play. While a huge portion of his yards were on the TD carry, his YPC weren’t horrible before that (just under 4) and Barkley has always been a “big play” back. Good game by him, I really hope this continues all season.

WRs – This group is interesting to say the least… Before I get into anything, Shep’s injury on the last offensive play didn’t look good and this may be it for him as a Giant. He’s been hurt most of his tenure here and has never been an all pro or pro bowl player, but Shep is a good WR who plays his butt off on a weekly basis. Hopefully I’m wrong and he’s okay, but I don’t think it’s the case. For the rest of the crew them underwhelming is going to become a weekly trend, we need someone to step up here. Shep saw 1/3rd of the targets last night and while Golladay played more than last week, he did nothing to make us want to see more of him, he also had a big drop in crunch time. Sills is limited athletically, and James is better than advertised but still scares no one. Someone needs to step up in this group, maybe Robinson when he gets healthy, maybe Toney gets his head together??? A core of Sills, James and Golladay isn’t going to cut it.

TEs – I need all 22 to comment on the blocking but we’re starting to see more of Daniel Bellinger and he looks like he can be a solid player. With the lack of talent at the WR position Bellinger stepping up and establishing himself as a safety blanket for Jones would be huge, especially with Shep out. Sadly, I’m more confident Bellinger can step up than our 71 million dollar man at WR.

OL – This felt like watching last year’s offensive line. Collapse after collapse from every part of the line except LT where Andrew Thomas continuously had his man blocked out of the play. I didn’t see Parson’s lined up on Thomas a lot, but I know when they did Thomas put him on the ground at least once. For the rest of the line, I’m hoping this is their motivation game because they got it handed to them yesterday. We expected Neal to have growing pains and I’m fine with that, but the interior is full of vets and they need to show more consistency. Knowing he was hit with a family tragedy early this year, Feliciano has been underwhelming as has Glowinski (in the passing game). Bredeson never had expectations and hopefully Lemieux can come back and play better. Its notable that this group run blocks much better than they pass protect.

Defense:

23 Points given up to a back up QB and 176 on the ground. This was our worst defensive performance of the year and I’d still make the comment that we gave the offense a chance to win. Still, just like the offense there are some holes that need to be cleaned up. At certain points in the game we get the reminders that we’re not fully “built” yet.

DL – The most obvious comment to make here is that we missed Leonard Williams. Bad contract, bad trade for him, but he’s still a very good player that effects the game. Not only does his lack of presence explain the 176 rushing yards, but he’s instrumental in collapsing the pocket on the rush. Outside of Lawrence, who played well and pushed the pocket, the DTs we rotated to replace Big Cat were continuously pushed back at the point of contact. The good news is Williams heals quick, but you can see his value when he’s gone.

EDGE – We were excited to see our shiny new toy last night in Thibodeaux as well as the return of last year’s rookie sack leader Ojulari. Unfortunately, it didn’t net us much as we had 0 sacks and the 2 players combined for only 2 tackles. We were quick to remember that Ojulari missed a lot of camp and KT is a rookie, we’ll get more out of both moving forward. Ward continues to be the best in holding the edge and had 6 tackles, its notable that Dallas attacked the edge a few times when Ward was out of the game. Something to watch for, especially if Williams misses extended time.

LB – I split edge and interior LB up today. Whenever you give up 176 yards rushing you have to assume that the LBs didn’t play well, I’d say that was the case today. On Pollard’s 46 yard run you were able to see one of the LBs (I believe Calitro) take the wrong gap leading to the run, the same thing happened last week on McCaffery’s long run. On Zeke’s TD Crowder had a good angle on him and the hole filled yet didn’t even attempt to wrap on the tackle, instead he opted to try and take him down with a shoulder. Result was a missed tackle leading to a TD. We can ask questions all day about releasing Martinez, but it’s been 3 weeks and no one has picked him up, there must be more to that story.

CBs – For 3/4s of the game I sat and watched thinking our corners did a really good job but then I blinked and all the sudden CeeDee Lamb was having a really good game. The reality is that for 3/4 of the game our corners did play well, but CeeDee is a good player and did what good players do, he stepped up in crunch time. All in all, 215 yards passing on 31 attempts with the front 7 getting 0 sacks, I can’t fault the secondary on this one. The were put in a tough position and did the best they could, next time we need to do a better job blanketing the WR1 crunch time, but they held their own most of the game.

S – I’m still on the boat Xavier McKinney is our best defensive player and both him and Julian Love should be getting extensions. The 2 combined for 20 tackles last night, moved all over the formations from the box to single high to covering the slot and played well wherever put. Belton got bailed out on a drop by CeeDee early in the 2nd half but was quiet otherwise, he’s a rookie and it shows sometimes but I think we have something with him moving forward.

Coaching:

Hard game to comment on the coaching. There were no crucial, gutsy decisions that needed to be made nor was there anything glaring with the game plan. The bottom line is we got beat up in the trenches and its very hard to do much else when that happens. On offense I do think Kafka did what he could to give Jones an opportunity and I’d again reference that we scored most of our points after halftime which shows we adjusted. On defense Wink lives and dies by pressure, that was the case last night. There were things we could have done better, but all in all the defense game the offense an opportunity to win the game.

Conclusion:

We can look at these one of two ways: we lost to Dallas again…, or we’re 2-1 after a stretch where most expected us to go 1-2 or 0-3. I prefer to see us as 2-1 going into a winnable game against a Chicago team that may not be able to exploit us where we’re weak. Some of the bad we’ve seen is fixable, such as the offensive line which should improve as they play together more, but some things will linger all season such as the lack of talent at WR. The good news is that the front office seems to now understand that we need to rebuild our roster (which has already started) and yet the coaching staff we have now seems capable of keeping us more competitive during this time than the last 3 coaches we’ve had. Its early in the season and things can go a lot of ways the rest of the season but 2-1 was a good start and I think this staff will keep the season entertaining for us fans. Now let’s go beat the Bears.
Much better this week

on Dallas' TD drive, why did Wink have the DBs 10 yards off the LoS? I thought Patrick Graham was back...
Would have been perfect time for tight man to man...

I was not impressed with the coaching last night. They looked unorganized.
I agree with virtually everything you said. Great summary.

The team is 2-1 and that is good considering the talent level of this team. They kept the game close into the fourth quarter even though they lost the battle at the line of scrimmage almost every play.

The defense is coming along nicely. Missing Williams hurt a lot. There is still some tearing down to do and a lot of building up. The team is starting to trend in the right direction, but they are not even an average team yet when it comes to roster talent. That will come.
Good thoughts.

This Giant team is still too devoid of talent.
I agree with all this
ShockNRoll : 9/27/2022 9:17 am : link
To me the biggest take-homes last night were the offensive and defensive lines got pushed around all night, and special teams directly led to a 6 point swing between the blocked FG and the terrible coverage on the punt return for Dallas's FG to make it a 10 point game in the 4th quarter. Wide receivers are terrible, and if there is a pie chart of blame, I'm giving maybe 2-3% to Jones.

I would love the opportunity to see Barkley perform in a fully functional NFL offense. I'm not sure we will ever see that with him in a Giants uniform.
Williams may be a little expensive
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/27/2022 9:18 am : link
but he is the best player on D and a huge part of the future imv. The trade was made out of necessity and you see how much his presence was missed.

The OL needs to get better. Let's hope we have the right OL coach to bring them along. We had a good amount of rushing yards but still not enough consistent results between the tackles. Jones effort made it look better than it was imv.

Our WR's are lack a true number one but some of the guys playing are battling.

Good thoughts overall. More work needs to be done. Keep battling.
I definitely was at 0-3 for the first three games

so having two wins is a blessing in my book.

There are, and were, a lot of deficiencies on this team, and it showed up in all three games.

In this game Dallas played better than the Giants. Their back up QB played a decent game. He made plays, and very few mistakes. It did not look like he was rattled at all. This was one of the differences in the game.

Not having Leo in there was another difference and it showed. The only way we were going to win is if our defense got to the QB, and sadly they didn't.

Lastly Dallas put a whooping on our O-line. That line, particularly the interior is very suspect, and I don't think Bredeson is the answer at center either.

The Giants still need a decent Center and a decent guard. They also need a couple of WRs. They need a few more players on defense too. That is not going to happen until next season.

So we are going to win a few more games than I thought this year, but you have to expect there will be ugliness.

One more thing. Daniel Jones played a gutsy game under duress last night. He played as well as he could under the circumstances. I think some of his limitations were still on display, but he did step up and play a gutsy game and made some damn good plays last night.
The thing that stood out to me the most

Was the inability of both kavon and Azeez when it came to setting the edge. It really opened my eyes to how hard you have to work, and how long it takes to pick up the nuances of playing edge in the NFL. At this point in time Would it be a stretch to go as far to say that all the the players the Giants have drafted, ximines is our best “Edge?” No one would of thought to say that two to three years ago.
Mustn't lose sight of the fact that
Gruber : 9/27/2022 9:27 am : link
this is a transitional year. Daboll's put his mark on this team by making them compete a darn sight more than we ever say in the past three or four seasons. Schoen has inherited a cap nightmare, and Golladay.
I never expected us to beat Dallas and was impressed that we had a lead going into the fourth quarter, so no disgrace just anxiety about Neal's early struggles.
It does still get me that we took Matt Peart in 2020 with #99 (then Darnay Holmes with #110) and the Cowboys took Tyler Biadasz with #146. Said at the time we should have taken Biadasz. And Will Hernandez not working out really hurt us. I'm sure Dallas's drafting has it's hits and misses, but it sure feels like they've done a better job over the past few seasons.
A good recap, Bitey,
Section331 : 9/27/2022 9:32 am : link
about the only thing I can add is about the CB's - things would have looked a lot worse if Lamb had hung onto to 2 big gainers. That said, without a pass rush, it's hard to blame the DB's too much.

Still a long way to go offensively. We have to hope Ezeudu continues to develop and win one of the OG spots. Feliciano has been a major disappointment. I wasn't expecting an all-pro talent, but he has been downright bad. Need to upgrade the OC and the other OG spot badly. And the WR's...oof.
One thing I'll add about the coaching,
Section331 : 9/27/2022 9:34 am : link
good HC's are able to keep games close until the end, and Daboll has done that. Guys are playing hard for him, I like the offensive scheme, even if the execution is lacking. I am confident that we have our HC.
Great
AcidTest : 9/27/2022 9:56 am : link
review. This team is going to continue to lose without better pass blocking, production from our WRs, and a consistent pass rush.
I think the coaching did very well
jvm52106 : 9/27/2022 9:57 am : link
last night and too many here forget how much of a TEAM game football is versus any other sport.

Look at the game last night. We shutdown Parsons most of the game. I mean, honestly he wasn't really involved much in what happened. BUT, because of the attention we gave him others on the Boys did stand up. Unlike our team, with Williams out nobody else stood up. Thibs and Ojulari were stymied and many times Thibs was WAY late getting set. Our LB's didn't make plays and our CB's were basically doing as much as possible considering we have NO rush.

Lambs second big catch was from Holmes being completely fooled.

We have to be "complimentary" in that all parts have to work together because the sum of the parts is far greater than the individual pieces by themselves. We do not have a parsons, a Garrett, a LT or even a Banks... We have to have all of the pieces functioning or it won't work.

It is even worse on offense. We had to manufacture plays from scheme, design and "trickery", just to get small 7-12 yard plays. You shouldn't have to complete three passes to get a 1st down. yet, our passing game is so limited our routes are movement based (QB moving as well) and clearing out areas to catch a free guy underneath. Once the threat of the run is out of the equation our passing game is dead because we don't have guys who can win one one matchups.

The staff manufactured as much as they could last night when so severely limited on actual options and weapons.

To make a NASCAR metaphor here:

when the caution is out and everyone pits for fuel and tires, we pit for fuel and just move the same tires around hoping they don't wear out or go flat before the end of the race. last night both things haappened.
Great summary
Rjanyg : 9/27/2022 9:59 am : link
One thing that seems pretty obvious to me, when Ward and Ox were the edges, Dallas seemed to pass more and when Azeez and KT were the edges they ran the ball. Dallas had a good game plan.

Calitro is a liability. I think it is time to get Mcfadden on the field, bring Jaylon Smith up from the PS.
Crowder is hurting this defense
nygiants16 : 9/27/2022 10:00 am : link
whether its in the pass or thw run game, he always takes the wrong hole and he isnjist not strong enough at the point of attack..

On pass plays his drops jist are not very good, he always seems to be a step slow and covering backs or tight ends he is trash..

I really wouldnt mind letting Jaylon Msith and Mcfadden take over, Crowder just continues to hurt this defense

Dallas was targeting Azeez in the run game. When your arch rival who is very familiar with your plays goes after a guy, that tells you something. Obviously coming back from injury is part of it.

But Azeez is a pass rusher. If he is not getting pressure, he can be a liability in run game

Leonard Williams was a HUGE loss for this game. Dexter and Leonard are elite run stoppers togehter. either alone against a good running team won't be able to hold up as we saw.

Agree with you guys. C is severely undervalued by NFL teams. Personally in think they have it backwards. ELite interior can make avg OTs look good. If the QB can step up, the OTs can push their man past the pocket. When the interior collapses there is no place to go.
We were reminded that Ojulari never sets the edge

It would be fun but honestly I still don't think anyone would really want to listen to me on a weekly basis. I know there are some YouTuber's out there that really didn't let this stop them, but I'd feel like I wouldn't be able to put out a good enough product to tie my name to it. Not that the name BiteyMax22 has any value...

Couple thoughts

Lack of being able to stretch a D is very apparent. WRs can’t scare anyone. We are really 2 wr short. It still may be our biggest need.

Neal looked horrible in pass pro. More than rookie stuff. I was expecting more athleticism. I know suppose balance issues but seriously that was bad.

IOL. Glow had a bad game. Expecting more, at least solid pro level. Maybe a guy like SL helps a little and maybe josh E develops this yr. Gates would be awesome but can’t count on more than a cameo this yr. Another need

Thought jones played his heart out. Has nothing to work with. What we saw last nite is someone who may actually be able to lead team . We have a bunch of wr3/4s out there though. I don’t see how a gadget play like Robinson helps much ( rather have had a Pickens). Toney, rooting for him but it’s actually trending to a waste of my time. KG needs an exorcism. He is in his own head now

ERs did nothing for me. Thibs showed zilch. Not even a sweet first step. Will have to chalk it up to first game jitters and coming off knee. Ojulari? Expecting a lot more from both

Yeah. U could tell we missed LEO

Love is definitely a solid player now, X a stud at safety
Great analysis. 3 players I want to comment on:
Dinger : 9/27/2022 2:03 pm : link
Evan Neal: I was SO disappointed in his performance last night moreso because it came against that prick Demarcus Lawrence. I DO feel like he WILL get better. He's a mountain of a man who is also an athlete(opposite of someone like Mekhi Becton). So I look forward to his future.
Kenny Golladay: His performance last night actually gave me hope that he can become a player for this team instead of a news article. I hope after that MISERABLE drop that he's motivated to prove he isn't a piece of crap. I hope.
Sterling Sheppard: This is obnoxious, but my first reaction to his injury was,"get him off the field". I was so disappointed that he was injured yet again and yet again he was a leader on and off the field and someone you WANT to be your best WR and a captain, just betrayed by injuries far too often to be seriously relevant for either of those roles. I will miss him, but its time for the NYG to move on from him.
