OL - not what you think

Matt M. : 9/27/2022 10:47 am
Let's start with the reality that even weith some decent moves, this was never expected to be a top OL this year. It was supposed to be an improvement, which it is, and add depth, which it did.

After last night, it's easy to ask how this is an improvement. But, you are gauging the OL entirely on the ability to protect Jones against one of the better pass rushed in the league with a decent secondary. What is being missed is the run blocking. Barkley had one run for a loss. He is averaging over 4 YPC and cinsiustently making plays in the second half of each game. That is a big improvement.

Think about LG to address depth. Last year, they had no plan other than Lemieux, even when he was hurt. They just penciled him in and went into the season like that. They were scrambling for an able body after game 1. Right now they have Bredeson who is not great, but looking better than last year and they work in their rookie, who may end up being one of the steals of the draft. Glowinski, again, is not great, but playing well in the run game. Neal is the same. He is getting beat outside as a rookie. But, he also shows flashes of his strength and athleticism to think he will improve with coaching. This year was a building block for the next few.

Thomas, the line was terrible last night. Neal had a tough assignment between trying to learn and play a new technique vs Lawrence and Parsons, so I understand his issues. But the interior was awful. How was a vet like Feliciano 8 yards downfield on a screen pass? Glowinski got knocked clean on his ass by Parsons who was already engaged with two other players. Ok, yes they are somewhat better run blocking, but still inconsistent.
But I will be positive because they only have 3 games together.
as I said on section125s thread earlier and for many years

the OTs can be great, but if the interior gets blown up it doesnt matter. I think Neal wil be fine. Just needs some experience. And a little help from the coaches with TE lining up next to him would help
Honestly, Barkley is running differently this year
Rick in Dallas : 9/27/2022 11:00 am : link
He is running with power as he firmly believes he is fully recovered from his knee surgery. No more dancing behind the LOS.
The OL may be better at run blocking this year but it really all about how Barkley has changed his running style 2 years removed from his knee surgery.

the entire iOL is a mess

Band aids from last year that take time to gel again

Neal will take time we HOPE to improve at the NFL speed and faced a huge test last night and failed. You could see how his lack of athleticism could be an issue and/or weight.

Thomas had the same issues in using his hands, head down and leveraging his size for an advantage

Is lemiux good enough and can fill a role? Does Gates ever come back? He was a great FA find with him

Neal needs to be given a free pass on this year. He may have a rough rookie season and that's ok. This team was never supposed to compete this year. Fixing the interior of the line is a must.

They really need to make that a focus in the off-season.
The contrast between the 2 blocking units was alarming.
mittenedman : 9/27/2022 11:47 am : link
The Giants looked like they had no chance of blocking the Cowboys defensive front, and the Cowboys looked like they had no problem blocking ours.

Quite frankly, I don't get that.
paid glowinski $18mm

He stinks. Feliciano stinks. Bredesen is awful. Still dont understand how we dont draft a center.
This is the third week in a row

that I've heard about how they had to go against a really tough DL

Because we have dozens of needs and only had 11 draft picks.

Sigh.

I understand fellas but we still paid $18mm to an ex Bill that isn't any good, as well as drafting a gadget WR in the first rd. of 2021 and the 2nd rd of 2022
Until we fix the o line

Nothing on offense will be fixed.

I would draft o line with the first two picks next year.

Bredeson should be moved to Center

And start Ezeudu at LG. Yes, he's a rookie and will struggle, but the OL will be better next year as a result.

Feliciano is a backup C at this point.
Ezeudu will play more
Dave on the UWS : 9/27/2022 2:26 pm : link
when he is ready. He needs a LOT of technique work. Makes Neal look like a polished vet. Long term,he may be the answer at LG. If Gates doesn’t come back ( still possible THIS year), Lemieux or Brederson might be the answer. There is a reason Feliciano was only signed for the year. Patience is needed
Feliciano

Giants thought they were signing Jon Feliciano but mistakenly signed Jose. Feliz Navidad

I can get behind this. In his brief time in game action, Bredeson looked good at OC this summer.

Exactly. Plus, my main point is that it is just not fair to say this OL isn't improved. IT was so bad, that, yes, this is an improvement. The run blocking, for example, is much improved. The pass protection still leaves a lot to be desired. But, realistically, as a unit we weren't going from one of the bottom 2 OLs in the league to a top tier unit in one off season. But, we did improved multiple positions, we added depth, and we drafted for the future.
