Have we greatly undervalued Leonard Williams?

Everyone Relax : 9/27/2022 12:07 pm
Our DL got thrashed in the running game and had no pressure up the middle. I don't mean to imply that people thought he was bad but I think his absence yesterday showed he's clearly our best D lineman and contributes so much more to both the run and pass defense than I gave him credit for. I think without him in the first 2 games Henry and McCaffrey might have had much bigger games.
A lot have

I sure as shit have not. He is a top 2 player on the D. Huge loss. Hopefully he is back soon.
He's still overpaid
Greg from LI : 9/27/2022 12:09 pm : link
A good player, not a great player, but the dropoff from him to his backups is steep.
I'm pretty sure most fans think Williams is a very good player

The trade and the contract have been criticized, but not so much the player.
Some have
Johnny5 : 9/27/2022 12:13 pm : link
Some haven't. I certainly did not. He's a hell of a player and I'm glad to have him.
Not me
Ben in Tampa : 9/27/2022 12:13 pm : link
He’s probably the best player on the team.

The Gettleman factor made many fans sour on him from the jump.
I honestly don't know

if we win the first 2 games without him. Overpaid, maybe, but every team has those guys and he's certainly a top tier DT in this league.

.

I would concur with that, they might miss him more in the run game I think.

The Dave factor is a huge part of it. This was one of very few good moves. He immediately improved the run D when he came here and has gotten better each year. Big part of the future imv.
We could have won that game if he played
Chip : 9/27/2022 12:18 pm : link
First missed games in his career. Two or three extra stops along the line could have made a difference.
Williams is really really good
BigBlue7 : 9/27/2022 12:18 pm : link
And Gettleman botched the entire trade/new contract situation

Again, both can be true
Leonard Williams and Barkley have been undervalued a lot
UConn4523 : 9/27/2022 12:20 pm : link
how we acquired both happened and really generated flat out hate for both situations. But the players themselves move the needle on both sides of the ball, clear as day IMO.

If both are playing healthy, I like us at around .500 even with all the other bullshit that's wrong with the team. Without them, probably 5 wins.

The guy was good the minute he walked in the door. Great first season. Solid second if you don’t think sacks are the only yardstick. And if you did undervalue him then last night should be a lesson.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 9/27/2022 12:25 pm : link
We sure as hell missed him last night.
If he was a free agent now
Giantimistic : 9/27/2022 12:25 pm : link
He would get a contract as big or bigger than he currently have. Ignore how he got to us. He is a foundational piece of this defense and I hope we keep him for a long time.

I just don't think heading into the game it was such a big talking point about him being out. It was much more focused on the OLine and lack of weapons on offense (which proved correct), but I sure as hell did't expect to get nothing out of the DLine without him in the game. Maybe those were my own expectations. Not an argument or accusation to anyone here, simply my post game thinking
Not How Good He Is
Samiam : 9/27/2022 1:28 pm : link
Not just how good he is. Our depth is pretty bad
Maybe the thought was
JB_in_DC : 9/27/2022 1:32 pm : link
with EDGE reinforcements coming in, the impact of his loss would be counteracted. But he is a much more impactful player than Ojulari or Thibs.
The issue is not with how good he is, but how he was acquired
mikeinbloomfield : 9/27/2022 1:51 pm : link
Gettleman traded two picks for a player 7 games away from being a free agent. Gettleman used the transition tag on him, but LW still knew he had the Giants over a barrel. If they let him walk they would have traded two picks for essentially nothing. So he got paid. I predict this is going to be another contract the current admin will end up regretting.

Agreed. If he had played, Giants would have won IMHO.
Him being out
Thunderstruck27 : 9/27/2022 2:45 pm : link
Exposed how bad our ILBs are. Calitro and Crowder fill the wrong gaps, are easily blocked and taken out of plays, and aren't particularly strong tacklers. We couldn't stuff the run last night in the second half
If he was drafted by the Giants
Dnew15 : 9/27/2022 3:32 pm : link
in the Reece era - he'd be everybody's favorite player.
I was worried going into the game
bradshaw44 : 9/27/2022 3:38 pm : link
about him being out. Was hoping the return of Ojulari and Thibs would fill the void, but that was wishful thinking as we saw.

What? Because Reese is so popular on BBI?

I hope they can extend him

If BJ Hill and Dalvin Tomlinson can get $10-11M per year, Leo would get near $20M.
