Choking away the division lead in the last month of the season against solely the worst teams in the league!! Yeah baby!
No - I would not have signed up for this at the beginning of the season. But it’s entirely possible to recognize their good season while also being disappointed at their choke job.
The Mets have controlled their own destiny for the last month only to dwindle away. But keep hanging that drum!!!
You wouldn't have signed up for having a guaranteed playoff spot and controlling our own destiny with 6 games to play?? Really?
I'm not talking about the way it's happened, I'm talking about where we are today, where we will be tomorrow.
This season has brought so much joy..and we still have baseball left. As a long suffering Mets fan, I'm just enjoying it.
It’s a bit disingenuous to say “I’m not talking about the way it happened”. Context is everything. Super glad that you’ve been soooo happy over the last month of bad baseball against bad teams.
If someone told me before the season that they would win 100 games, then yeah, I’d be super stoked. Not so simple though.
If someone told me that the team would win 100+ games, lead the division for most of the season, but then choke away the division in the last month against the worst teams in the league only to settle for the WC - yeah, not super exciting to me.
Just yet. Depending on how we look over the weekend. Winning the division isn't the top priority for me. Prepping for the postseason is. So I'll let it play out first. Disappointing, yes. But it's not the end of the world. Yet.
how much more difficult the postseason will be if the Mets only get the WC versus the Division.
Winning the division should be the priority.
This is correct, and some of us have been saying it for 2 months. As you say I don't think some people understand the new playoff format and how it will impact the loser of the division

I like him pretty darn good right now. Who doesn’t?

I am approaching my 48th birthday so I have lived through the late 80s. The Mets with Cohen are a recent entry to the elite teams in baseball. This is all "new" to many of us fans. Heading into the playoffs, I was concerned the Mets needed to go through the "playoff heartbreak" that many teams seem to go through before seeing success.
In my opinion, the Mets and Braves battle is giving this team some "playoff" type experience. I also feel the NL East has the best top 2 teams in baseball which is proven by the defending World Series Champions and the now contending Mets. Phillies are also a quality team.
This NL East battle has been amazing and while the cushion of the Wildcard is there, we need to win this division.
The Mets haters are starting to get nervous because we are now legitimate.

The road is much more difficult with an additional WC round. I want to avoid it at all costs. That said, all that experience didn't seem to help ATL much last night, and thank you Eduardo Escobar! I've been down on him most of this season, but he's picked it up when he's been needed the most.
4 straight games with 2 walks each. Yesterday, had 2 walks and 2 hits. His early AAA struggles are behind him. His AAA BA is now up to .234. Because of 34 walks in 45 AAA games, his AAA OBP is actually now higher than his AA OBP. (.382 to .368). 70 walks and 27 HRs in 112 minor league games. Doesn't turn 21 until the season is over

Thanks for the update KD, the walks are a great sign. I love to see how patient he's become.

the walks are indeed a great sign. I still think he needs a full year at Triple A next year so that he can work on his defensive inefficiencies, more than anything else. His bat seems major league ready or very close to major league ready right now.

I agree that he should start in Syracuse, but I'm not sure he'll need a full year. That depends on how his first half goes. If he's lighting it up, and his defense shows improvement, I could see him being a mid- to late-season call-up.
It's been an awesome season! 97 wins so far!
Tough night against a locked in pitcher tonight...not cool but such is baseball!
Still control their own destiny! Heading into the season you'd have to sign up for this!
Lets go!!!

So if Mets lose tonight and if you assume worst case and Braves sweep Marlins...
Mets need to either:
Go 2-1 vs Braves, 3-0 vs Nats
Or
3-0 vs Braves, 1-2 vs Nats
Braves have been through this and it shows.

Don't let Speedy see this post, he thinks playoff and pennant race experience don't matter
I run more hot and cold!

This is obvious, but I mean, it's not like the Mets have choked. They have 97 wins.
It's full credit to the Braves, who were 10 games behind and had to win THAT much more often to close the gap. They are the Champs for a reason.

1-2 vs Braves, 3-0 vs Nats
2-1 vs Braves, 1-2 vs Nats
3-0 vs Braves

First 5 months of the season? Not so much.
1-2 vs Braves, 3-0 vs Nats
2-1 vs Braves, 1-2 vs Nats
3-0 vs Braves
yup just win the braves series. then all they need is 1 win vs nats (or braves loss).
Three times in a row he came up with the division in the balance and came through all three times.
Had a horrible three months in the middle of the season. Talk about redemption.
This must be the game thread title for the rest of season! (Including playoffs)

Drove in all the runs 7th inning and later, 3-3 from that point. Amazing! Ya gotta believe.
If Mets sweep two last series, they will have won 8 out of 9
Not an exact match. But close enough for history to repeat itself
This was an enormous win for that alone.
It's been a rough stretch, I will never say a bad word about Escobar again.
