NFT: Did Judge break Ruth's 154 game HR record?

GeofromNJ : 9/29/2022 2:59 pm
In 1927, Ruth hit 60 home runs in a 154-game schedule, but played in only 151 games. This year, Judge hit his 60th home run in game 147 and his 61st in game 155, but Judge has played in only 151 games so far this year. So, do we say that Judge broke the Babe's record given that Judge hit 61 HRs in 151 games and Ruth hit 60 HRs in 151 games?

By the way, Maris played in 161 games in '61 and hit his 60th HR in game 159 and his 61st HR in game 162.
The answer is no.
Essex : 9/29/2022 3:03 pm : link
But who cares? Judge did not hit 61 home runs in a 154 game period, he hit it in a 155 game run. Does it matter? Do you think less of Judge's accomplishments. These records are all for the fans. If you don't think Bonds, McGwire, Sosa etc are worthy (an opinion Judge does not share) than Judge is now tied as the HR king. When Sosa and McGwire were going for the records in 1998 did anyone focus on the NL record when they passed it? No. Now, people are focusing on Maris as the AL record because there are a portion of people (and I pass no judgement on it) who think Maris is still the rightful mark.
That is up to them. Whatever you want it to be it can be.
We should give Judge
JoeyBigBlue : 9/29/2022 3:07 pm : link
An asterisk when he breaks the record. Ruth is still the HR Record Holder……. Laughable shit.

Eh. The passage of time has made it a dead issue. We dont look at baseball records that way in 2022.

It would have been nice if he did it before Game 154

Great season but still falling 10+ short of the home run record.

No.

But the way teams pitched around Judge since he hit 60 was ridiculous. He barely had an opportunity to get to 61.

Yanks played 155 regular season games in 1927
shyster : 9/29/2022 4:20 pm : link
A quirk I just recently noticed.

Ruth played in 151 games that year, but team game 154, in which he hit number 60, was only game 150 for him personally, and it was not the last regular season game for the Yankees.

Ruth played in game 155 and was 0-3.

Where did the extra game come from?

Yanks official final record for 1927 was 110-44-1. The tie occurred in the first series of the year, when the game was called with the score 9-9 after ten innings.

Apparently, the rules at the time called for an extra game to be played to make up for the tie, and, again apparently, it was played the next day against the same opponent, the Philly A's.

Ruth did not hit a homer in the 9-9 tie, but he did hit one in the makeup game.

Ruth hit number 60 in team game 154 but, as I look at it, he did so in a year in which his team played a 155 game schedule.

I guess that's sort of a thing, the "154 game HR record,"
81_Great_Dane : 9/29/2022 4:28 pm : link
since Maris got an asterisk — but nobody else did for any other record.

It's a team record, the team will decide how to handle it, I guess. The records for HRs in a career, HRs in a season, all long gone.

Bill James wrote about the evolution from "Babe Ruth's record for home runs in a season" to "Babe Ruth's record for home runs (in a season)" to Babe Ruth's record for home runs to, eventually, "Ruth's record." The point being, the framing changed over the decades because 60 wasn't challenged. Now it's been done a few times.

It would be a shame if this tempest in a teapot overshadowed Judge's season, which is one of the greatest ever recorded by a MLB hitter.

Or maybe until next year should he hit 61 in 154 games.
Actually, the '61 Yanks also played an extra game

The 1961 Yankees played 163 games. I believe Maris hit 61 in game 163.

Actually, no they didn't. They played the same 162 game schedule as every other team. The only time an extra game has been played has been for a play-in to th season and is very rare. This has been replaced this year with tie breakers.
The answer is no
Matt M. : 9/29/2022 5:22 pm : link
Judge has not broken any record. He is currently tied for the Yankee and AL record. Whether anyone likes it or not, 73 is the MLB record and barring a miracle, Judge isn't touching that.

I think what he is referring to is there are some games that end in a tie because of a rain delay where they replay the entire game and while the game has no effect on the standings, the rained out game's stats do count.
Bonds had 68 through 154 games
larryflower37 : 9/29/2022 5:27 pm : link
And Judge is currently the 7th most in one season.
Love how a select group of people try and change the narrative to suit themselves.
Sorry Matt M but you're dead wrong

The 1961 Yankees were 109-53 but played an extra game because of a tie. In Game 163, Maris' 61st homer beat Boston 1-0.
Isn't the record referred to as
Bill in UT : 9/29/2022 5:43 pm : link
"most home runs for a blankety-blank game season"? Three is no record in the books that I know of for "in a certain number of games played". Nor for at-bats, official at bats, home runs that went over 400 feet. You can play those breakdwon games ad nauseum.

Correct. The 1961 Yanks were officially 109-53-1.

The statistical advantage of a tie contributing to individual cumulative stats, because an extra game is played in its entirety, no longer exists.

Rule was changed in 2007 so that games are either resumed or not made up at all.

I stand corrected. The team ohas 162 decisions, but the individual stats from the tied game were counted. That is no longer the case.

In any event, Maris only played in 161 games.

What MLB rule did the "cheaters" break, Manny?
Cheaters ....

McGuire who apologized, Sosa who almost did and Bonds (the king of the designer steroids), who never will. I heard something about the only people hitching about this are the “baseball purists” - as if that is something to be ashamed of.

The “the dynamic trio”, are they who we should be beholden to for saving baseball ? Yeah, OK.

What MLB rule did the "cheaters" break, Manny?

Do you have to break a rule to cheat? Does a concept like "spirit of fair competition" or "spirit of the rules/code/ethos" mean nothing to you? Or are you purely legalistic in your definition of cheating?

What the fuck? Sosa “almost did”? He claimed during the hearing that he couldn’t understand English…
